I'd recommend The Dark Tower series as the answer to the initial question, but if we're just talking one book here... gotta go with The Shining.
Maybe The Stand, but it was the first book of his I tried (and failed to finish) and it was a long time ago. Too young to slog through the extended edition. Should probably give it another chance.
