Yeah, our schools dont do a good job of highlighting that period between Emancipation and the Civil Rights Movement. Dont hear much about Jim Crowe laws, lynching mobs, entire towns being razed to the ground reminiscent of the pogroms in Eastern Europe. It leaves this prevalent belief that slavery ended so people should stfu about it already. Slavery was just a symptom of an underlying rationale for hatred and xenophobia. If it was taught as much as the Revolution and Civil War, I think wed see a potentially friendlier America. History is really just the study of people. The difference between slavers and lynchers and you and I is a hair-thin margin. Probably just our respective upbringings and education. Its an important and sobering lesson. --- |
