I actually finished it yesterday and I have to say, this is a brilliant game. I did have to look up how to get to one of the final areas (it involves warping) though, that was a little obscure.

Also thank goodness for cloud saves because my save data corrupted at one point.

Boyhood escapes by only three months, so I will choose its fellow 2014 oscar contender, Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance. Now I did enjoy this film, the performances are great and it is very technically impressive. The trouble is the script is completely vacuous. It presumes to have some great commentary on modern popular culture, but in reality it doesn't say anything at all (other than "critics suck lol" and even THAT it walks back on). Ironically it can be compared to a lot of the pop culture it is trying to critique - great fun to watch, but not much going on beneath the surface.

It's an official sequel with a story by Andrew Hussie but written by fans and previous contributors (led by a SCP writer). It is following on from the epilogues which I'm not crazy about, but it sounds like they might be about to disregard a lot of that and do some wild stuff. One update, and a "bonus update" per month, also there is a Patreon. And most importantly, the command suggestion box is back.

The Letwin amendment passed comfortably, so Boris's deal passing unamended seems extremely unlikely. Even if the Letwin-voting MPs who say they will vote for the deal and the voting MPs who abstained voted for it, it still loses (albeit narrowly). Now, what would get it to fly past is attaching a public confirmatory vote. If the DUP back an amendment for that it's unstoppable, and if Labour can whip like they whipped for Letwin it doesn't even need them. The DUP seem to have finally learned that brexit kills the union, so here we go.

Also any Labour MP who votes for a deal that scraps worker's rights is not a Labour MP.

Absolutely not. This would mean no deal brexit which would completely screw Ireland, cause major damage across the EU and probably trigger a global crisis. This will never happen.

What actually needs to happen is simply to have a public vote on the deal or remain. Something which a million people marched for in London yesterday, and I'm happy to say I flew back just to take part. The number of signs referencing Untitled Goose Game pleasantly surprised me.

I mean there weren't any explicit opinions given, and the existence of The Outer Worlds being under embargo at the same time gives some nice plausible deniability. It's nothing on Jeff reading the NDA for MGSV and the first item on the list to not disclose being "the contents of this agreement... Oops". This is entirely inference from us obsessed fans, we could get to November 1st and it turns out they all think it's a masterpiece.

Also sounds like Abby played a lot and agrees with Dan, and Jeff got mad at her for her opinion without realising she was just agreeing with Dan. Anyway, I wonder if Brad will like it. It has been a while since we got a good Brad vs. The World at GOTY.

I was thinking that maybe the controls would be less finnicky and the design would be a little more accessible than RDR2. But I guess not! Sounds like he has stopped playing it and has no desire to go back to it. It makes him like RDR2 more which is amazing.

It has a similar atmosphere to Subnautica, there are very limited survival mechanics like oxygen but that's it.

Also I found an ending by Dying before you get to the statue. It rolls credits which is amazing.

There are some control issues for sure, particularly revolving around the jumping. I really like the space flight though, the decision to use somewhat realistic locomotion takes some getting used to but really pays off.

*Very minor spoilers to follow, just about the premise of the game*

It's out on PS4 now. I have done a few loops now, and all I can think about is this game. I am sitting here at work just wishing I could go home and play that game, which I pretty much never do. This game has an amazing sense of discovery that I haven't seen anywhere else, it's kind of the game I always wished would exist when I was a kid.

Though I will say, I was exploring the cave below the icy summit in Timber Hearth and I just died, it was like the Supernova but happened far more quickly than 22 minutes from the start of the loop. Wonder what that was...

Thumper at #2 is one of the only "what?" choices, and some people adore that game. El Shaddai (remember that game?) making it at all let alone #40, and Control as high as #6 already are also eyebrow raising. However, it's a good list overall, with a great mix of very different games. Year Walk made it so that's great. Also the correct #1. I expect many more lists with that choice...

I think THIS says more about GTAV though. For all the amazing reviews and the continued gigantic sales, that game has kind of disappeared from the critical discussion, the only more rapid vanishing I can think of for a big prestige game is Bioshock Infinite from the same year.

Yep, a full four month delay, and it had a whole mode delayed further, and an entire version got delayed. It was definitely nowhere near done in the way it was expected to be.

Let Erdoan do it you mean. There are many, many people in Turkey opposed. I have to imagine that this is in part an attempt to counteract his and his party's slumping poll numbers - there is a real chance that they are out on their arse at the next election for the first time in 17 years. I hope this blows up in their face, Erdoan has been courting Turkish Kurds for a while now and I can't imagine this would go down well with them.

This is a great film and if anyone thinks Joker is a great role model or an icon to be followed in this movie, that is both unbelievably stupid and sad, but also entirely on them.

What's also interesting about the response to this film is that after the initial rapturous praise there was a large backlash, and now we're already on the backlash to the backlash and everybody loves the film again. After a whopping two days of release!

The writing was sadly on the wall for some time regarding Waypoint, it's disappointing but expected. It's essentially a three person crew now, and the brand barely exists anymore. I hope they can all eventually find cool new stuff.

I mainly just feel bad for Patrick. The only place he's worked at that didn't implode after a couple of years was Giant Bomb. It would be cool if he came back honestly, though I personally always preferred Austin's contributions.

I think Tetris 99 is a terrific game as well and has arguably been supported better than Apex which is a shock.

I think Jeff will utterly hate Death Stranding. That game looks like it will try to out-RDR2 RDR2 on the things some didn't like about that game, without necessarily having the things that those people loved. I think Dan will like it though, we'll see.

I just wonder if we will have another edition of Brad's open-world GOTY vs. Jeff's multiplayer GOTY for the fifth year running. Probably not given how Jeff feels about Control, but maybe he'll go back to Apex.

They are very selective. They also show their age sometimes. Tetris Effect easily winning GotY with no pushback was....very telling of their tastes.

Abby pushed back, calling it toothless and there is something to that. It was the game that everybody could agree on. When people did the average of all the staff lists it still came out on top, and the overall list was nearly identical. It is an excellent game without many blatant issues or opponents so it's fine - PUBG is the only GOTY winner that sticks out as just bizarre.

However, when you look at their GOTY winners from 2008 to 2014 there is a clear shift. Every one of those was a very common pick among outlets and the more traditional "prestige" single player experiences that often win GOTY awards. Then with Mario Maker they shifted to games that were uncommon picks, much less of those traditional styles of game, but meant more to the site. Tetris Effect is probably their most typical pick of the last four years, yet still a very "Giant Bomb" winner.

Anyway, that's why Apex Legends or Tetris 99 may win GOTY.

I was listening to the Empire podcast and this came up regarding the failure of The Goldfinch, a disastrous adaptation of an acclaimed and very long book. Most good adaptations of doorstoppers split them into parts (LotR, Deathly Hallows, It). So what is the longest book to have made a good single film?

The Godfather is over 600 pages but parts of that did go into Part II so maybe that doesn't count.

Well it is in the hands of parliament so it's not undemocratic. That law was just to stop Boris from trying to undemocratically force no deal. Parliament can rule he doesn't accept an extension.

Also since you mentioned it earlier: there is no way the EU refuses an extension. They cannot afford to be the bad guy on this, and they especially won't screw over Ireland by forcing no deal and thus a hard border. Of course no deal brexit was never a viable option, just a threat to try and get a hard brexit deal through.

There is clearly no mandate for the deal as is so we need a new referendum. That's all.

There can't be an election without a Parliamentary vote with a 2/3 majority.

Corbyn is expected to call a VONC tomorrow. He will surely win it, and that would mean a post-extension election or a unity government with PM Jezza. Frankly I'm partial to the latter because an election would be a crapshoot. A caretaker government to deal with brexit (likely through a deal v. remain referendum) then call an election would be preferable.

I'll give red sox this - the FTPA is terrible. Only exists to prop up weak governments. Everything else he says is lunacy.

The Tories are screwed, as Labour+Lib Dem+SNP is now an effective majority. There might not need to be an election, and if there is Bojo will really struggle for a majority. Bojo is essentially out of government and no deal brexit is thankfully dead. It was an insane idea to begin with, holding yourself to ransom as a negotiating tactic.

I expect a big Daemon X Machina focus, that game is out in 9 days and is flying under the radar sandwiched between Astral Chain and Link's Awakening - they need to boost it. Assassin's Creed Black Flag/Rogue remastered leaked (classic Ubisoft). Monolith Soft's new IP seems like a good bet. Is this where Metroid Prime Trilogy finally appears?
