It would only affect people who actually care if the way they finish the game by rewinding is validated or not. If they don't need such validation, it's not even directed to them cause the merit of beating a game is meaningless to them.

I mean, you can do an attack in a game that misses or hits for 0 HP but it still registers as an attack...!

Except when Dagger can't concentrate

Good luck Chicago fans as the franchise spends the next several years thinking he's so close to making the leap so they can't give up on him yet.

I dunno. It just feels like he's taking a bit too much pride in the way he plays games if he needs to make a distinction in what it means to actually "beat" a game.

I feel like if you're like me and you don't care about how you beat it, then you're probably not bragging about beating a game you took a shortcut to beat anyway.

Also particularly worth noting, attack against who? People who don't supposedly care if they legit beat the game or not as long as they have fun?

I mean, yes? The person doesn't necessarily have to care about the attack for it to be an attack.

I don't go out of my way to clarify that I looked up a solution, used a save state/password, a Game Genie, or what have you, because I don't really think it's important how someone beats something, but I'm not ashamed that I've done it or anything. I also almost never care to 100% a game. If you want to discount the way I play games, fine. I'm still going to keep playing them that way. I think it's dumb to obsess over 100% completion and grind for hours in RPGs, but more power to the people who have the time and patience for it.

So at what point does skipping become less egregious than rewinding?

Say a dude has a problem getting through Heat Man's stage and passwords through that, does all the rest by himself.

Did he beat Mega Man 2?

I already asked a literal situation from my own life along these lines and nobody bothered to answer it...!

No I'll be fair to LMS - the new Planet of the Apes trilogy is awesome and probably the correct answer.

Captain America is strong, but it depends on other films and I feel both has lower lows and lower highs than the Apes films.

I mean I've beaten the Mario games without skipping any levels, and it's a lot of fun seeing what the whole game looks like.

Unfortunately, I did it on the GBA version of Mario 3 which has a save feature so I didn't really beat it.

The whole "if you actually don't care you wouldn't respond!" argument is dumb. I don't necessarily have to be personally invested or offended to have an opinion. I mean, sure if you want to be completely literal, I guess you could say I "care" enough to post about it, but not because I personally feel "under attack" or feel the need to discredit Mike Matei. I just don't like the way he phrases his opinion because it doesn't come across as a guy looking for his own personal validation but rather the opposite.

It's been said various times that this is somehow intolerant behavior. I don't really see anything like "If you rewind you're stupid", or "the police should pay a visit to these people and take away their games". He even started with "if you agree"!

People ITT been overly dramatic sounds about right.

Well, that would be an overly dramatic take that no one here has made. My problem is that it comes across as trying to invalidate the experiences of people who do things differently than you (and with strong language like "you by no stretch of the imagination beat the game" it leaves little room for debate on his end), which isn't necessarily great behavior.

But I've also repeatedly said that I don't really care if you think I've beaten a game or not because I usually don't brag about beating one. I don't get my sense of ego from it. When I was a kid, I used a Game Genie several times to help me beat hard games (like Maximum Carnage). Would I mention that on the front end when discussing the game? Maybe, maybe not. I don't think it's that important. Would I hide it if someone asked me point blank? No.

Also, when I was a kid, I was playing Michael Jordan's Chaos in the Windy City (yeah, yeah, I know), and I was messing around with the password system just for fun one time. By complete chance, I entered a password that put me at the next to last level. If I beat the game from there, does that count as "beating" the game?

Lightning Gant is my favorite damage animation in the series. It's so great.

And lining up that stupid jar to make it look like the Blue Badger is one of my least favorite things in the series. Even today when I've replayed that case at least 5 times, it takes several tries to get the game to accept it.

Yeah, I don't mind point and click for certain genres or even if you just want to do it on the overworld (because I don't care about world maps in most games since they basically really only serve as a vehicle to get you into random battles), but I need some sort of freedom of movement beyond just dungeons.

yeah, I like the movement better too. some people need that slow run in their RPGs though.

It's not necessarily movement as much as it is immersion. I'm trying to imagine playing something with a sprawling world like FFVII with something like what P3P uses. It's just not the same, but P3 doesn't have a big sprawling world, so I guess it's a bit easier. I suppose Shadow Hearts does something similar with its interface but you're still moving around in the towns themselves, I guess.

Either way, P3 has a top tier atmosphere and one of the best final battles in any game I've played, but I don't enjoy some of its negative mechanics like getting fatigued and stuff like that, which I don't feel like need to exist.

I don't see why telling someone he really didn't beat a game would be taken as an insult.

A: But you see... you didn't really beat the game.

Maybe if he expressed it like that instead of stating in no uncertain terms that he doesn't accept it as beating the game. This wasn't merely a "I disagree." It was, "I don't accept this as valid."

How you say it, not just what you say, matters, as it turns out.

Yuri also sets the tone that this isn't your average JRPG protagonist in the opening scenes. Rude Jerk indeed.
