hot take: island of the idols is definitely not the worst season in survivor history

that being said, everything surrounding and involving dan put it undoubtedly in the bottom tier, just a stretch above disasters like one world and redemption island, because it actually had SOME amount of compelling characters

yeah but those are the first four boots - the first four players rarely have any particularly lengthy and compelling edit unless they really did something to stand out. and the fact that they are players people may have already cared about is a staple of returnee seasons (hi rudy, rob c, yau-man, randy, etc...)

I thought Cambodia was a fascinating, unique season from the point of its initial premise - fans voting on who they wanted to see in the game - and it played out like a really intense sporting event. For some people, that might not be compelling, and I could see how the editing for newbie seasons wouldn't work well for that approach.
But in Cambodia there was such a dramatic energy throughout the season. We had players who were compelled to go hard because they felt responsible to the fans after being voted in. and with players the audience was familiar with, the gameplay was able to shine. I love both the drama and characters in the show along with the game itself; there's a reason why I like competitive reality shows and not the plethora of others. Cambodia really leaned on the game but it did so in a consistently compelling way that no other season outside of Heroes Villains even comes close to.

but yeah more than anything when you aggregate a list like this you just get people that were mostly inoffensive and fairly well-liked getting higher than they would reasonably otherwise

when dan had his episode a few weeks ago it was pretty clear where he stood among fans for the rest of the season
but tommy and dean can still lose points in our eyes, so in a weird way we are more actively frustrated at them than at dan who is just already classified permanently as a terrible person

like edwin and godwin (i think that was their names) literally torpedoed their entire games just to help out two teams who had no shot of winning

after having time to listen to rob's KIA podcast, read reactions on twitter, and discuss the issue on forums, i've come to a couple conclusions different than my initial reaction:

- production should've removed dan from the game.
kellee clearly being bothered enough to elicit producer reaction (the talk that everyone received and the warning to dan), along with the documented evidence on camera of his inappropriate actions and kellee specifically asking him to stop earlier in the game, is enough in my view to justify his removal from the game. and ultimately, because the producers didn't do it, the action fell on the hands of the players affected (kellee herself and janet) to step in and deal with it themselves. because janet felt compelled to take action herself, she screwed up her own game and got gaslit by the other alliance's players in the process.
the producers were in an extraordinarily difficult position here, because they knew the extent with which the incident got conflated and intertwined with survivor the game, but they should have made that call, and the extent to which it continued to be a problem in the 2nd hour of last episode (and may continue to in future ones) is on them.

- survivor needs to hire on-site people to deal with these sensitive issues, specifically from diverse backgrounds.
i heard this one passed along from kass (and maybe others), but this seems imperative given what we've seen this week. the largely male staff was not properly prepared for how to address and handle dan's behavior, despite what i believe were genuine efforts from both jeff probst and them to not skirt around the issue. this seems the only way to move forward from this on their side imho.

all i can hope for from a survivor fan perspective is that dan gets dumped soon and we can move along with the game, because this is going to dominate the season until he's gone, even if it's not the focus of the episode like it was this week.
it's a shame because up until now we were doing surprisingly well and i had mostly forgotten about s40 looming. now it's like ugh please let's just get this over with

that was a pretty difficult and overwhelming couple of hours of survivor and I have a few thoughts

shutout to the producers and editors, who made sure to point out basically every documented instance of Dan actually doing the creepy shit Kellee called him out on

also shutout to probst for grilling dan when he kept going on with the cop-out "well, if you're not going to drop this" like what he did was some easily-forgotten accident

but uh...the people that be fucked up by casting Dan. they failed by failing the women out there on the island. I know that they certainly would have never expected anything like this to happen, and the producers did their best with what happened out there, but I wish someone would just straight up say "we feel terrible for the behavior of Dan out there, and we made a mistake casting him." it would make the whole discourse surrounding his involvement in the game and the difficulty with the people left balancing their moral compass and game status a lot more palatable.

also please let Janet win somehow

i liked the premiere! sandra was great at tribal council, but i am a little worried in how they'll balance all of this in a 1 hour episode.

at least i feel like i got to know a good amount of people from the start, a la david vs goliath, which turned out pretty okay in the end
