It's like the purgatory between destinations. Once you're inside a place, be it a club, bar, library, concert, store, etc.., there is already a common thread for the agregate to identify with and thus more opportunity for organic conversation. Situations are only as awkward as you feel/make them. That's a big part of being smooth.
