6-5 is truly phenomenal, but I didn't like any of the other cases, 6-3 included. Which hurts, considering how long the cases are. For mainline games, I'd only rank it above 4.

it'd probably be dead because the economics of those two games are complete opposites. capcom needs those couple million people up front paying $60 to justify making a game, not the tens (or hundreds) of thousands maybe paying $10 for a character every couple months

maybe the economics of fighting games changes in the future because so much of how companies release games now has changed, and i could see riot's fighting game doing something interesting there, but there's no way a conservative company like capcom would make the leap

Yeah I'll take that one, that was a bit much. But again it was viewing it from my own criteria. If yours is different, own it. I can't feel proud or say I beat a game if I abused state save or rewind. If you can, that's great. Do it! I apologize if I came off abrasive.

What about the point of view that you're not beating a game unless you 100% it? People who say you have to get the platinum in a game to actually beat it?

Eh. For one, Edelgard seems not to be as damaged as Lysithea was. And secondly, it's perfectly possibly that Hanneman or Linhardt or someone would've cured her if she were. I don't see any reason to think she dies that early.

I mean, there are still modern RPGs that do voice acting well, and I play with the Japanese voices a lot which are good. But some of them are probably hurt by it, especially in terms of pacing in cutscenes.

Eh, the cutscenes would still have that same slow pacing that's caused by having voice acting. I appreciate it when games let you manually advance all text rather than forcing you to listen to all the dialogue (or not listen, if you have the voice acting disabled).

I actually think FFX gets much better if you either add a scene skip button or just removed voice acting altogether. games like FF6 would sound stupid as hell too if you had someone saying son of a submariner out loud.

I've wondered sometimes if voice acting is the reason I'm not as into a lot of modern RPGs.

Stars Align beated. Whelp, that sure wasn't an ending! The creator says he wants to finish the story, but I'm skeptical that he'll be able to make it happen. Watching this was probably a mistake, considering.

Other than that, it was mostly pretty good? I liked the character interactions quite a bit, and the way they worked together as a team was neat. Maki's dad was never interesting, but the other characters' family dramas were rather more compelling. My favorite part of the show was all the stuff with them getting good as a team, I think. Maki leading the team to competence was great. Ended up giving it a 7.

Also finished After School Dice Club, a bad show. As I said before, it's bad because most of the board games are so boring. Some of the characters (namely Miki and Aya) are lame too. Miki's whole "I don't know how to have fun" thing is super dumb and makes no sense, even within the context of the show. Her drama thing in the last episode is also bad. The interesting part of the show is Midori's quest to make a board game. I like that a bunch of the show treats her like the main character, since she's WAY more compelling than Miki is. Emilia was fun too. Give me the Midori and Emilia adventures any day.

I do think more granularity is nice (the PC ports of the Cold Steel games let you set the fast forward to any speed, for example), but even just having the speedup would be great for FFIX battles considering how slow they are.

I struggle to think of Overclocked as a proper remake instead of just an enhanced port. Either way I disagree, though. 1 absolutely has better atmosphere, but 2 has better everything else imo. Granted I didn't play the 3DS version, so maybe gameplay was enhanced enough to overpass? But even then Record Breaker included the brand new scenario instead of just 8th days, so I'd still probably rank it ahead.

I only played the 3DS versions, and the gameplay was exactly the same in 1 and 2. The 8th days were very good as well!

are you sure you were 6? I ask because there are lots of things that I remember doing at young ages that actually happened 2 or 3 years later. I can remember getting my face beat in by MM2 when I was 9, but by the time I was 12 I could handle it after a lot of practice. obviously others may be better than I was, but it wasn't until I was older that I could handle those games.

anyway, both of my kids can handle 3d games, but the idea of sidescrollers is actually really foreign to them. they tend to hold a direction for a long period of time because that's what they usually do, so when they try to play a 2d Mario or whatever, they have to fight against that. that's my perception of it anyway. my son is reaaaaaalllly bad at even the first level of Mario World but can beat Mario Odyssey (using the assist mode, but still) and is at the end of Breath of the Wild.

Oh that's interesting regarding 2D vs. 3D games for kids nowadays. Hadn't thought of that. Interesting that they're good at one but not the other.

Also it's possible that I'm remembering from a later time, but I think we sold our NES by the time I was 7. My memories of that time aren't super sharp though, naturally.

My 6 year old was playing this today and was able to beat Wily 1 despite not having anywhere close to the skills needed to beat a single Mega Man level from any other game, and that's wonderful.

Not to throw shade on your son, but I got to the last boss in MM3 when I was 6. I feel like some people nowadays underestimate how good kids can get at games if they play them enough...?

That's one of the things I loved about P3P. Getting around that game feels so simple! Made it a pleasure to play through.

I'm about an hour away from finishing Day 4.

I really appreciate the recaps and am glad they do it. It offers the chance for them to talk about games that people may enjoy that have no chance of winning any category they may do, and also let's them talk negatively about things without having to get into an argument of "this is worse than this" which can be fun to listen to but probably makes the tone of GotY more negative than they want. All that said, I just wish there was a way it could be condensed into two days rather than three. The categories are a fun part of their GotY model and I feel a split of two days recap, two days category awards, last day Top 10 would be a fantastic format.

What I don't get is why they bother talking about the games they thought were neither bad nor good. Spending three minutes telling us "I played this for two hours and it was okay" is not interesting.

I liked the climax of the movie on the last planet. The Kessel Run was lame though. Also the part where the L3-37 becomes one with the Falcon was very cool.

It's amazing how much worse The Clone Wars movie is than the series, and the series has some real bad episodes!

TPM has some great parts, but there's so much bad. I'd rank it the worst of the main 9 pretty easily, though I'd still put Solo below it (since it... doesn't have those great parts).

Do people tend to stop what they are doing to focus on the song when listening? I tend put them on in the background while doing other things on GameFAQs. So adding another match doesn't really change much for me.

Dr. Stone: This was mostly freaking great. Definitely my favorite non-sequel of the year at this point. The sheer joy of science it delivers is incredible. I found myself tearing up at several points, mostly just from Senku's amazing descriptions of great scientific accomplishments in the past. It's great when a show can focus on emotional content without being melodramatic or whatever. I feel like I heard some people complaining about the edutainment aspects of the show, but those were the parts I liked best. Honestly, the show would've been better with even MORE science! The rest of the cast wasn't quite as good as Senku, but there were a few standouts. Chrome was excellent, Kohaku was fun, and the brothers were cool. Taiju and Yuzuriha were much less interesting, but the show doesn't spend much time on them, thankfully.

The one flaw of the show that keeps it from being 10/10 (I'd give it a 9 at this point) is that the battle scenes are all boring. There aren't too many of them (maybe like 5 episodes of 24 have battles?) but none of them are interesting. The animation for the battles is generally garbage, and the motivations for the villains are all blah. I wish Senku would stop talking up how smart Tsukasa is when basically everything he says is stupid bullshit. Tsukasa's pretty much the weak link of the show overall, IMO. Get rid of him and it's a lot more fun. The battles are where the show feels most shounen-y too, what with the non-fatal nature of them. There's no way the villagers wouldn't have killed Hyoga, for example, considering how happy they are to kill outsiders in general.

Still a great show though! Would highly recommend it, even to people who aren't really into shounen fighting series. Check it out, pyre!

Finished Oresuki: Are you the only one who loves me? and I can say without reservation that this is the worst show I completed in 2019. The first arc was legit good - I enjoyed the dialogue, the comedy was good, and the character development was nice. 8/10 content that I liked a solid amount. But the signs were already there of the show turning to shit (notably Pansy turning out to be super hot, which while predictable, completely defeats the point). After that it basically turns into a garbage harem that completely forgets the original premise, AND it falls into the trashy LN trope of introducing new girls every single arc just to make the MC's harem bigger. Episodes 4 to 12 had maybe 15 minutes of enjoyable content between them and a whole lot I hated. To be fair, I'm a lot more antipathetic towards harem stuff than I used to be, but it's so much worse when a show insists it's not a harem and then turns into one anyway. If you're going to be trash, at least acknowledge it from the start...

I liked Xenoblade 2 better than Torna because of all the little systems (raising all the blades was super addictive), but Torna is undoubtedly the better game in general. The story's far tighter, the main cast is way better, the gameplay is streamlined (in a good way), and it doesn't feel like it overstays its welcome. The new environments are great, too. It's neat playing a 30 hour Xenoblade.
