Haven't we literally known this for years at this point?

Maggie Haberman still has a job btw
Yes, but I don't think it's widely accepted because people make the same fallacy that's one of the major reasons for this bias existing in the first place (the implicit assumption that each "side" in a political issue are equally valid). They then decide that coverage of Trump being 90% negative means that the mainstream media is biased against Trump, even though it should be even more negative (e.g. there are no "two equally valid sides" to "is it okay to extort the Ukrainians into announcing an investigation into your political opponent).

The media is biased against Trump because they intend to damage his cause. They try to compensate for their inherent bias against him by making the coverage "balanced" and end up favoring him. So they are guilty as charged by Trump and as charged by you.

Incidentally, it's too bad the VA government is now controlled by Democrats, because a great way to make it a red state would be to remerge it with West Virginia! And to really guarantee a Republican victory, cede the original portions of the District of Columbia back to DC. It wouldn't increase DC's representation since they don't get to elect people to Congress and their Electoral College representation is fixed at 3 votes.

Also, always found it a little surprising that the Republican Party could do well in Virginia, which is home to the highest concentration of federal government workers anywhere. Trump literally promised to take away their jobs by draining the swamp. I mean the Republican Party has been making the same promise for 40 years but Trump actually gave signs of meaning it.

It's like Hillary Clinton and West Virginia - she literally told them she was going to take away their livelihood and maybe offer them a few online classes.

Muffin you do realize that your implication that only immigrants want free stuff is not exactly making you look non-racist, right

yes because if only I hadn't said that, you guys wouldn't be calling me a racist

just like how you never called mitt romney one either

there's empirical data on this - I've posted the chart before

the single biggest variables that correlates with "favorable view of socialism" in America is being foreign born. bigger predictor than race, gender, age, college education, anything. Immigrants are more likely to favor Democrats, completely and entirely independent of race or social issues.

So, is this like how the single extracurricular activity best correlated with getting into top colleges is having parents who visit art museums?

Immigrants tend to be poorer, and poorer people the world over tend to like socialism. Because it's in their interest to do so, much like it's in the interest of rich people to want lower taxes on the rich. It's just rational self-interest.

Poor Americans tend to be more skeptical of socialism than poor people elsewhere in the world, because capitalism has delivered prosperity for America for so long. So it's not surprising that immigrants to America like socialism more than people whose families have been here for generations.

Trump did far better with Hispanic voters than Romney did. I haven't seen the stats for legal immigrants as a group but I would be pretty shocked if he did worse than Romney with that group. Anecdotally legal immigrants have a higher rate of Trump support than people whose families have been American for generations.

The NYT thesis is that people's votes are determined by their race and immigration status, and this is the thesis that was bought by the Republican Party in their 2012 postmortem. But this is the same thesis that was decisively rejected by Trump, who instead said that anyone could vote for him, regardless of race or immigration status (provided they can legally vote), and he actually campaigned for their votes. And he got way more votes from people of color and immigrants than Romney, and he won.

It's not minorities and immigrants who are turned off by Trump's rhetoric - it's white, educated, liberals (in the classic sense of liberal, not leftist).

I'm not quite understanding this loathing for swiveling one's chair. I frequently get up and walk out of my office to talk with coworkers, which surely takes more time and energy than swiveling my chair around. I'm sure it takes longer too, and I guess you could argue that it's lowering my productivity by wasting time, but if my productivity were being monitored to that extent that this would be considered wasting time, I would really feel like a wage slave.

If I had no coworkers to talk to, I would still get up constantly and probably spend 25% of the workday standing/pacing.

Hey, if you guys want to remember how terrible it is here!

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/11/climate/epa-science-trump.html

The EPA is preparing to institute a new proposal that is going to "significantly limit the scientific and medical research that the government can use to determine public health regulations."

Basically, they're going to require scientists to turn over all their raw data including confidential medical records before the study can be considered. Which, as the article points out, is likely to make enacting new clean air and water rules because many studies that detail links to health concerns rely on collecting personal health information with the assurance of confidentiality agreements.

The "coolest" part? They're making it so this proposal will apply retroactively so they could use it to justify rolling back rules already in place.

The article contains a lot of details but basically landmark studies conducted going decades back that are the foundation for air-quality laws, mercury poisoning, lead in paint, etc. could all become inadmissible under this when they come up for renewal.

unsurprisingly scientists and physicians are against this.

NYT reports that a 1993 Harvard study that linked polluted air to premature deaths and serves as the foundation of the nation's air-quality laws (as well as 1995 study supporting that conclusion) appear to be the inspiration for this proposal.

Can the EPA people go on a tour of China and see how bad air pollution can get? They can also see how nice airports can be while they're there.

And, we can defund all those scientists who are spending billions to tell us what anyone could learn with a couple thousand dollars to spend on a round trip flight to China and a few hotel stays.

And before people deliver hyperbolic attacks on the US Supreme Court, let's be honest - right now the Court would rule 9-0 that Trump can't be elected as President a 3rd time. You would have to replace 5 justices with people like:

Ivanka Trump
Donald Trump Jr.
Eric Trump
Barron Trump
Ann Coulter

And even then, I don't think the odds are better than 50/50 that they would let him stand for a third term without a constitutional amendment.

Question for people:

Suppose on election night 2020 the Democrat wins the Presidential contest, but a Republican Congress is elected. The electoral college meets on December 19 and votes for the Democrat as expected. The new GOP Congress is seated on January 3. On January 6, Congress meets to count the electoral votes, and Mitch McConnell proclaims that Trump has won reelection with a count of 270 to 268.

In this scenario, if the military recognized the Democrat as President after January 20, would that be a coup?

I mean according to the Q poll cross tabs posted last page, Warren has higher support with college educated whites (21%), but her non-college degree support is at 19%. The idea that her voting base is overwhelmingly liberal elites is probably just due to her media image. If anything, Buttigieg fits that more - he has a 24/15 split.

If anything sets Warren apart in her coalition (which is more spread out than Bernie's and Biden's), at least according to this Iowa poll, it's that she's more popular with the suburban middle class (50-100k) compared to everyone except Buttigieg. Unless the suburban middle class in Iowa are the liberal elites...?

Obviously would have to see more polls though.

She's winning "liberal elites," not "liberal" elites.

She also doesn't have a message or plan. The liberal elites like her because they're the ones watching the news, and the MSM is doing everything in its power to push her as the nominee.

That would be a sad ending to a career of fighting for the working class, to become the leader the elites want.

Also mother freaking Gabbard qualified for November so we're going to have 10 again. This is getting ridiculous.

Edit: And Klobuchar qualified for December because they gave her sooooo much speaking time in October. This is awful news.

Thanks Hillary.

It's the "elites" part that's the problem, not the "liberal" part.

I think this focus on only Michigan/Wisconsin/Pennsylvania is a mistake. Those were the key states in 2016, but that doesn't necessarily imply they will be the key states in 2020. In 2016, a big mistake by the Hillary campaign was to focus her campaign's attention on the states that were the closest in 2012. So her campaign put a lot of resources into Ohio and North Carolina, but the reality was that if those states were close Hillary was almost guaranteed a win nationally. They were close in 2012 and Obama won big.

Can someone who knows the numbers tell me how many delegates Biden would be ahead assuming no one wins a plurality in IA and NH, but Biden destroys in SC?

Given the Dems use proportional rather than winner take all, a lot. Because he'll get credit for his big margin in SC while the winner of IA and NH won't get much out of a small win.
