They make it clear as day in the first episode.

Ciri mentions queen calanthe winning her first battle when she was Citi's age

The very next scene, geralt and renfri bring up that queen Calanthe of Cintra just won that same battle

Also wtf were they thinking with nilfgard armor?
The director said that since it's the early days of the nilfgaardian conquest, and most of their soldiers are very recently conscripted conquered people, their armor is basically shit to reflect that. The blitzkrieg-esque nature of their warfare hasn't yet allowed them to make the super ornate, or even good quality, armors that they'd be known for in the later parts of the war

Still looks like shit

RoS would have been a lot better if it were two movies.

On paper, the film actually addresses a lot of problems people had with TLJ. It gives Rey an actual arc, with personal struggles/demons that mean something (and makes her fail, and have to recover). It gives Poe a background, gives Finn someone/thing to bounce off of regarding his stormtrooper background. It gives Luke an actual compelling reason to go off to the jedi ho.eworld, other than hiding and cowering. It gives background to the first order, it shelves a lot of useless filler plots and characters. And much more.

Its problem is that it's clearly two movies shoved into one running time. Meaning we're getting arcs introduced and resolved within minutes. Jumping from place to place without a minute to breathe or digest. And a lot of these developments dont get properly explored, because, whoops, been here too long, onto the next place!

If Disney dropped the tradition and "let the old ways die," and made this a quadrology, the end result would have been much better.

He has some cool story behind him, and Christopher Lee is of course great.

But his presence in the movies is weak. Not a lot of presence, very little buildup to him, even compared to Maul who was a friggin mute. His dialogue didnt serve to make him particularly interesting or intimidating, even with Lee's acting chops. And his climactic fight as the final boss of episode 2 is easily the worst lightsaber duel showdown we've had, save episode 4 (and even then that had better stakes, even if the fight itself is famously lame). Coyple that with the notorious shot of him flying away with his Grandpa blanket tucked up to his chin, and he just didnt leave a great impression in the only movie where he was important.

Eggs he was better in episode 3, at least for the role he served. And he died almost immediately there.

So. Yeah. Like everything else in the prequels, he's great in every way except in the execution

Yeah, it's really obvious that the Sith blade was used as a plot contrivance to move the movie along as quickly as possible. I doubt it would have been so important if this were two movies.

It's very easy for me to imagine Rey and Kylo at the Death Star being the end to an eighth movie, with more time spent on Poe's girlfriend and the new former storm trooper recruits.
This was basically my exact thought process through this. Also, retroactively, I can see smoke's order to bring Ren to him at the end of episode 7 being used to bring ren to palpatine himself. Luke's journey to the jedi homeworld actually being a journey of research, for the Express purpose of counteracting what was happening on the sith homeworld (would it have killed them to call it Dromund Kaas? Really? At least then I'd remember it) Among many other things.

Tbh I feel really bad for the actress. She took a shit ton of abuse for what was really the writer/director's fault, and gets so massively downgraded and disrespected by the movie itself that tbh I'm amazed she even bothered to return.

Dont get me wrong, the character was a waste of cinema, but, like... it's not HER fault

@LostForest thanks for that. Going by that only, it doesnt seem as bad as people are making it out to be
For me the issues arent WHAT happens. If anything, it addresses a lot of issues I had with the sequel trilogy. Rey is given an actual, compelling, character driven struggle. So is Poe. The directions the characters are pulled are fine.

The issue is that this really should have been two movies. The first half blows through scenes so quickly they practically give you whiplash. Plenty of things that should be given time to settle dont really get any opportunity to.

Abrams basically made not only episode 9, but also the episode 8 he wanted to write. All stuffed into one movie. And it shows.

And yeah, it's very VERY obvious that Leia was supposed to be a big player in this one. And, for obvious reasons, she cant. And while they do their best with it... the way they have her sprinkled in, building dialogue around obvious stock footage leftovers feels very bare and sticks out quite badly.

As much as I would have liked it, it didnt make a ton of sense with how it was set up. Especially the sides that were taken.

Hiri and mukuro I can understand. But the lynchpin of the whole thing was, and always would be, Yomi and Kurama. And I'll be honest, I NEVER understood that alliance. Yeah, I get the two had history in kurama's demon fox days. But Yomi's ideology was basically diametrically opposed to the person kurama became post-reincarnation. To say nothing of the bad blood and inevitable backstab from Yomi that someone like Kurama would inevitably calculate. Idk. Always felt super weird seeing those two share a corner.

He showed up, showed off a fraction of his power to yusuke, and threatened to murder all of his friends/family if they didnt participate. That got yusuke and kuwabara in. Also had yusuke shitting his pants.

Hiei and Kurama were drafted/volunteered due to needing to fill out the team, and being the only competent allies they had.

Hyped in the sense that its star wars, a franchise I've loved since I was 5, and there will always be a primal id in me that is hyped to see a new one.

That said, TLJ really killed anything special I felt for THIS movie. TFA had problems, but it clearly had a planned trajectory. Rian Johnson literally threw out that trajectory because "what a twist" and didnt leave much compelling left in its place. Now we have the original director coming in to course correct. And we have a final chapter of a trilogy where we know shockingly little about most of the characters, know very little about the conflict/war beyond that it's happening because... nobody knows why, and have little to actually care about.

There's only so good a movie like that can realistically be.

TBH I feel really bad for JJ Abrams, here. Again, whatever problems TFA had, he was really put in an unwinnable situation with RoS. And it must suck to see something you had clearly charted out in a state like this.
