Getting screwed all the time is not fun.If you're getting screwed, 90% of the time it's probably your fault. RNG is a factor in the game for sure, but that's why you work around it. Every turn your goal should be to make all the moves you can to minimize the impact the RNG has. That's why tools like explosives are so valuable, because they're usually guaranteed damage. You don't play the game by running your soldier up to a piece of cover and firing. You're supposed to put some thought into your engagements. When you engage the enemy, what attack you open up with, and the positions your soldiers are in when you activate a pod are all very important. If you do those right, most of the time things will go smoothly. Also, both modern XCOM games become significantly easier midway through the game when your soldiers start gaining incredibly powerful abilities. Yes, even if you play damn near perfectly you can't eliminate the RNG entirely. There's still always the chance your soldier misses a 99% shot. Instead of firing a shot that bounces and explodes, you can hold the fire button down to launch a grenade that you detonate manually. And that shot is the one with the EMP. I think the game does actually tell you about that at the beginning of Tip of the Spear when you start with the Grenade Launcher. I'm not sure if the game mentions the Plasma Pistol's ability to disable vehicles though. By the way, the Plasma Pistol is one of the best weapons in the series due to its utility. The overcharge shot disables vehicles, so use it on a Ghost and then walk right up to it to get an easy hijack.
