i love one night: werewolf but i will concede that you need the right mindset for it to be fun. for me personally, the most fun part of any board game is getting inside your opponents heads and playing mindgames with them. werewolf is a perfect vehicle for that.

but you have to be willing to take major risks and lie your ass off to completely upend the status quo and embrace chaos when youre a minion/werewolf. naturally, the game isnt very fun when the werewolves are bad at lying / the game.

Adam Silver and the NBA didnt put a gag order on anyone talking about this issue from a pro-HK/free speech perspective (see: Terry Stotts literally last night and like 10+ teeets by Enes Kanter). At literally no point in this whole affair has any player or NBA figure been forced into silence by any authority or punished for pro-HK views. Tilman Fertita is a huge asshole and absolutely sucks (in both this situation and matters unrelated) and attempted major damage control to the Chinese market for the Rockets and even he didnt give Morey so much as a slap on the wrist. Nothing will happen to Enes Kanter either.

I dont understand where anyone has gotten the idea that somehow the free speech of NBA players, coaches, executives has somehow been limited or secretly suppressed. Thats not that case here - people are just exhibiting caution in speaking candidly. Youre making some sort of official or secret gag order up that literally doesnt exist.
When everyone in the league is avoiding the issue I do not think it takes a genius (lucky for you) to realize that Silver has laid down the law regarding public dissent.

And if not, then that means every player and coach in the league is apathetic or pro-China, which makes the league worth not watching even more.

Find me a social or political issue that even 5 or 10% of NBA coaches and players have commented on. I bet not even close to 10% of the league has commented on Trumps presidency and thats way more relevant to their everyday lives and the country they live in. Even when Trump publicly called out Curry the vast majority of players and coaches didnt speak up about it, even though you know they have opinions on it. Its not their responsibility to speak out on every social issue. That doesnt mean that theyre apathetic or even pro-Chinese in this case; it is simply not necessary or beneficial for every player to make their opinion on every issue known and its ridiculous to expect them to. Its not a conspiracy.

Outside of LeBron and Joe Tsai of the Brooklyn Nets who have explicitly stated their support for China, how is this any different than like, literally any of the other entertainment or products that you consume?

If you cant ethically consume the product of the NBA because of the influence of Chinese money and market, how is that any different than the multitudes of other companies that depend on the Chinese market? Nike, Apple, every video game company owned by Tencent. Are you cutting all of that out too?

Fair. It feels different here because the cowardice seems explicit for once, happening in broad daylight instead of boardrooms. But you are right in that theres little functional difference. Like I said above, this isnt exactly a big sacrifice for me.

I mean, Id argue that enough people are aware of the stories about Nike sweatshops and Apples child labor throughout Southeast Asia such that it could be considered in broad daylight even if Apple/Nike spokespeople arent actively generating quotes about it.

We all justify unethical behaviors in capitalism by sweeping them under the rug. It just feels disenguous and self-congratulatory to quit consuming something you barely cared about in the first place due to some sort of moral outrage, especially when the NBA itself isnt endorsing the actions of the Chinese government.

We all have to reckon with the consumption of media and products from thousands of unethical practices and companies every day and this just feels like such an arbitrary line to draw unless you are a prominent HK protest activist.

Having the integrity of the entire professional league in doubt means no pro basketball, period. Thats a big thing to give up for some people, especially if the mindset kicks in of my decision not to watch wont matter in the scheme of things, so why deny myself something I like?

I personally will continue watching the NBA unless like the league takes some official stance they force on everyone, which is of course not going to happen.

What. The league is literally already doing this. Not openly, but behind closed doors they absolutely have. The commissioner paid lip service to the idea of free speech, but he absolutely has told everyone to either make statements in support of China or stfu. This is obvious.

Yeah Im gonna call BS on this. Terry Stotts literally came out last night in support of free speech in comments to a reporter. I think players and coaches have opted to stay silent for their own sake.

Leaving LeBron out of it for now and just discussing other figures (Curry, Kerr, Popovich) who have opted not to comment first:

This statement is going to sound very obvious but...It is not the responsibility of individual NBA players or staff to solve an international political situation. There should be no expectation for them to make any comment at all, and its not cowardly to do that. You have to pick and choose the battles you want to fight on social issues.

As for LeBron, what he said was stupid and selfish; but i find it just as ridiculous to quit watching the entire product of the NBA over the statement of one player, and the tacit assumption that other players are in full agreement. Its like people who quit watching the NFL over Kaepernicks protest. Why is it necessary for you to agree morally with a political stand taken by a player to watch the overall product of the league? Why not just hate LeBron and cheer for a different team?

Outrage about the first statement aside, the NBA stood its ground - Morey was never punished, and the CCP has already rolled back their threat to stop airing NBA preseason games (likely due to insanely high demand in China). If anything, this proves that the demand for the NBAs product in China actually could outweigh nationalistic propaganda.

Nominator: Hannyabal (8/15)

(8, 9, 9)

[The subject matter is too heavy to really enjoy, but I cant really find any fault in it.]

1: After criticizing Futures for failing to take any specific political stance and Only Child for only making a political comment in one almost arbitrary line, it's nice to have a song actually go all in with its messaging.

2: I like this a lot more than her self-love anthem "I Like That" that got nominated last year. I actually almost didn't recognize her, but this time her name clicked when I read it.

3: I'm surprised by how well that sermon sampled in the song actually works; besides the refreshing bluntness of the speech, Sean McMillan seems to have a lot of charisma. There aren't a lot of things I could be less interested in than a Pastor's sermon interrupting things, but here, it really just works wonderfully.

4: She seems like a pretty good person too and I think I might be interested in checking out her earlier work? I haven't read into it too much, but I hear something about more sci-fi leanings in the earlier stuff, which has my attention. Particularly since the only two songs of hers I've heard are basically the exact opposite?

====================

Yeah, Americans is probably more of an outlier than I Like That is and by far the most overtly political song in the library. That being said, shes a pretty experimental artist in a lot of ways. Its technically still pop music i guess, but usually incorporates some other style - jazz, gospel, punk, soul, etc.

The Electric Lady would be the album with the sci-fi vibes, though I prefer the newer album Dirty Computer (which both Americans and I Like That are from). I havent listened to the album before The Electric Lady.

The swing voters literally dont matter. Its all about progressive voters being excited and showing up to vote. If they show up to vote (see 2008), its a landslide for the democrats. If they arent excited and dont show up, republicans will win.

Swing voters having any real impact on an election is just a myth to attempt to make candidates more moderate and centrist.

A little confused by the slavish defense of Trudeau here. To me, a topic like this is the equivalent of a hyper-judgemental conservative Christian senator (let's say Ted Cruz) getting caught cheating on his wife. No, cheating isn't really that terrible of a thing, but of course if the guy doing it has made a career of moralizing against things that he got caught doing himself, that would be worthy of special criticism.

That is the Trudeau situation in a nutshell.
