MrMallard posted...
Fire chiefs from years past, as well as current fire chiefs, have mentioned climate change as a factor in worsening bushfires. The base temperature going up by even 1c worsens fire conditions significantly - things dry out more, fires are more likely to start etc. the hotter it is, and Australia's temperature is getting hotter and hotter every year. The only people who have been downplaying or refusing to talk about climate change have been our right-wing politicians, like our prime minister who left the country for a holiday after the bushfires had already been burning for a month.

Australia's climate scientists and our fire chiefs - some of which were in charge during Black Saturday, Australia's previous "worst bushfire on record" - have taken climate change into consideration in regards to worsening fire conditions. They've been warning the public and asking for an audience with the PM since last April, and the Liberal government wouldn't take climate change into account even with these experienced fire chiefs bringing it up as a very real factor.

Labor and the Greens are willing to come to the table on this. Current and former fire chiefs are willing to come to the table on this. The prick who left a burning Australia to holiday in Hawaii and his cabinet of cronies are the only ones downplaying climate change in regards to its role in our fires. Side with them, and you're siding with one of the stupidest ruling parties in Australian history.

In regards to your next point, bushfires are common in Australia. Backburning is meant to reduce the risk of these bigger bushfires, and bushfires have been happening for centuries to clear land and make way for new life. However, bushfires usually leave something behind, and with modern infrastructure we.have to balance cleansing fires with the lives and needs of the people living in the bush.

Also, one or two fires every year seems to be started by some punk kid. A few of the fires last year were lit deliberately, including by a fire fighter who would start fires so he would be called out to put it out, which got him paid. So yeah, people have been known to light some of Australia's bushfires. In prior years, deliberately lit fires have been some of the worst ones for fire fighters to deal with.
Okay, thank you.

I'm all about green energy reform and taking better care of the environment, but how exactly is the current bushfire situation the fault of humans?

Bushfires are so common in Australia that the ecosystem depends on them for floral life to reproduce. It's not like a person set the current blazes. It's a horrible situation.

... only if your goal is a cool cinematic shot where you're seething at each other over crossed blades and you want to be in the upper part of the frame.

If you cross blades with one-handed swords that don't have guards, you're doing it so wrong I don't even know where to start.
Right, but a beam of plasma is vastly different than what you would find in traditional swordplay. Imagine if you were in traditional swordplay, but the blades were so sharp they instantly caused severe damage from simply grazing you.

This was not the case in the olden days. You could glance a blow and greatly reduce the damage, and metal blades would glide against each other and hit someone's hand (or the guard. A beam of plasma for a sword would likely have quite a bit of friction to it due to the extreme heat.

So if you lightsaber duelists are engaged, and they both happen to go for a wild swing, it makes sense for them to hold the sabers against each other for the "cinematic effect". If one tries to simply step away, they will most likely be hit by their opponent because it leaves them temporarily wide open.

You don't realize just how fast Jedi and Sith, or Force Users in general are supposed to be moving due to the Force. They are basically moving at what we would call lightning speed if we could observe it. It's why they're able to block laser blasts.

But anyways, a heavy hand and strong arm muscles would be very useful in a lightsaber fight. It's why Darth Vader was so unstoppable.

In terms of quality of life or materialism, money does buy happiness, but only up to a certain amount of it. Then it just makes life more stressful in different ways.

When you talk about it in terms of people, or sentiment, money can't really beat that. You can't put a price on a feeling that you get from being deeply in love with your spouse, or seeing your child grow up before your eyes.

Yeah and having money easily facilitates the ability for someone to start a family. Seriously what's with all of the sad sap movies where the rich people are oh so poor because they don't know how to form social bonds i.e dating, friendships? It's such a crock of shit.

There's very rarely a relationship of any kind that forms on the basis of genuine interest and we should really all just get over that. We want to be friends with people because of what they can offer us, and we want to date people because of how they will increase our status. It's a basic instinct reaction.

How about some sad sap movie where a father has to work for 12 hours a day just to scrape by at the skin of his knees for his household just so he can come home to an unhappy family that can't afford anything due to the awful work culture of the US?

Cause' real life doesn't sell.

The difference between other countries and the United States when it comes to guns is that there are already millions of guns in the US, whereas other countries don't have the same absurd numbers of guns or gun ownership for that matter.

If we were to outlaw guns(only outlaw present and future sales, not seize already existing), the only thing we will accomplish is creating a black market for the gun market, which already exists, and just make it a lot bigger. Guns are already expensive. Outlaw them and you're going to suddenly have people peddling guns for huge profits.

Seriously. I think it's stupid to own anything other than a shotgun or handgun myself, but its not hard to figure this out with basic intelligence. There is quite frankly no solution to this matter which would satisfy or resolve the issue for both sides of the argument.

We are left with 2 alternatives. We either spend the millions of dollars to put highly professional and vetted security guards in every school with school designs focused on giving students cover from shooters...which is a wholly silly idea

Or we wage a 10-20 year war on guns and try to collect every gun we can

I'm not sure if this pertains to it but I've read through this article several times because it's downright depressing if it's accurate:

https://www.usatoday.com/pages/interactives/news/rigged-forced-into-debt-worked-past-exhaustion-left-with-nothing/

It's in 4 parts.
I have no idea what it's like for immigrants, but I know a lot of immigrants haul loads for big companies on the weekends. It's not horrible in theory.

Start out pay as a dock person is $16.71/Hour. Top out in 3 years at $21.80/Hour. Usually only work 39 hours/week. Weekends off. 13 Days of PTO/year with rollover making you capable of holding 120 pto hours maximum before they make you take time off. 7 paid holidays/year + 1-3 unpaid shutdowns.

But the work environment is an OSHA violating mother tucker. Only 1 break(unpaid) for an 8 hour shift, 80+ propane powered lifts running at peak unload times (carbon monoxide), no climate control at all for cold winters or hot summers (no radiant heaters or fans). The worst part really is the flavor of the week where we are constantly being told to do our jobs differently because it's never enough.

They set a goal, we reach it, then it's an even more impossible goal. It's the "make sure you do your job 100% correctly, but we have to get drivers out of here the second they arrive, so forget it this time, we'll tell at you if the freight gets damaged"

Drivers will come from 3-6 hours away, work the dock for 1-2 hours, the drive back to their terminal. So if you have the top bid for a route, you CAN have an 8 hour day a driver and still make $60,000 year, but if you want the money you'd be going for the 5+ hour routes which end up paying $95,000+.

So most of the veteran drivers end up working 16-18 hour days, 5 days a week, and hate every minute of it

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition is horrible about this. The original came out in like 2008, then there was an extended version that came out in 2009 with content that never saw a translated release until much later. Unfortunately they couldn't secure the protag's voice actor so they used a different guy, which in some cases lead to the voice actor changing from one line to the next during cutscenes.
Also, the sound balance between skits recorded for the 2008 release and the ones they recorded for the Definitive Edition is horrible, the new skits sound terrible. I'm recording a let's play for that game and just gave up complaining about these things because they happen so often.

To be perfectly honest, we should be making regulations that force companies to invest in automation.

The entire trucking industry needs to go. I work in it. Something has to change for this employment sector that has over 8 million employees. These are people who are frequently working 50+ hour weeks and involved with hazardous work environments that don't get shut down for OSHA violations because the US economy depends on them.

Every forklift driver, shipping/receiving clerk, and truck is suffering immensely. My people are suffering, I am suffering. It all needs to go to automation.

Its not even hot until 90F. Seriously. If you can't stand to be outside on an 80F day just existing and having a good time, grow the fuck up and go outside more often.

You can only be outside in the cold for so long and remain comfortable. General set in time is 2 hours for someone who is acclimated to the cold. You won't even realize it happening while working in the cold, but when you slow down or take a break you suddenly notice your toes or fingers are freezing, there's barely any blood in your body that can move your muscles.

And when you get home? Have fun with your sore shoulders and hips from unconsciously shivering. Your body in the cold is like a car that's really low on oil. Sure, it works, but the insides are grinding and destroying themselves

I'm convinced the only way you can be fat of you possess 1 of 2 bad habits or both:

1. Eating out too much. Calories in takeout food are full of fat most of the time, so they are generally very high calorie. Any burger and fries meal typically runs about 1500 calories with a soda, which is the amount of calories most people under 5'7" and >=145Lbs need/day to maintain their weight with no excercise.

2. Junk food consumption such as chips, canned sodas, or snack cakes from supermarkets. These run in the same line as eating out too much. Someone will usually eat 2 servings of chips when they go for some, which instantly makes your day's diet gain 500-600 calories. If this person has 1 soda, there is an additional 220 calories, and 1 snack cake is about 250 calories as well. If someone does just that amount of consumption 3-4x a week before you figure up any other food they eat, these habits create a net intake of 980-1080 calories per day they have such habits.

These food items don't seem to make you full so you ignore it, but the calories they add can easily make you go over on your budget for the day.

If you cook/prepare 100% of your meals and avoid frying the food you eat, the reverse happens. It becomes difficult. Very, very difficult to maintain calories. Because you can put 20-40 mins in a meal of chicken/steak + brocolli and rice and only come out with 600 calories if you have a water. If you make a sandwich with sugar free bread you are probably only getting 400 calories. And if you havea bowl of health cereal with 2%milk, you are probably only getting 300 calories. On average, you'd only hit 1300 calories per day and you'd feel pretty full from having actual food and stay losing weight because on reality you're not getting enough to maintain weight
