The reasons vary from game to game, sometimes it's because I like the character customization better, sometimes it's because I get sick of playing generic mid-twenties white guy with brown hair, sometimes it's because I want to RP a character a certain way. One major factor is also the voice actor, like in Mass Effect I liked femshep's voice actor better (especially in me2, Mark Meer sounded like he had a sinus cold) I also liked the way femshep interacted with the crew better. In FO4 I like the female VA better too.
