Take the cologne incident and the attempted cover up as example. My home city has had a massive gang-related problem for decades which hadn't been reported publicly anywhere until only recently. It doesn't really help when you think you live in a peaceful (small) city and suddenly the police admit that there have been raids on violent Muslim extremist groups and Eastern European cartel headquarters for ages. Even if there weren't direct examples, it's still unacceptable that the government restricts freedom of speech (at least in my opinion). |

| TarElessar 09/12/19 12:34:17 PM #20 | Which things in particular are you interested in, snu? There are lots of differences, especially if you compare it to the US. Do you mean people's mentality, ethics, politics, religion? For example, LGBT+ isn't much of a thing in Germany compared to the US. Not like there aren't gay people obviously, but the overall movement hasn't evolved as much. As someone said, censorship is a major problem (well, it's only really a problem if you value free speech). As also mentioned, most people speak German, or try to speak it if you look at Bavaria. There are also differences in musical education, academic funding, university structures and many more. |

Regarding your moderation, if you read the post as a stand-alone, you can probably see why it got hit - you didn't mean it like that and it's just an NWD if I'm not mistaken, so I wouldn't sweat it. I agree with RebelElite here, there's not really any logical connection. If you grow up learning German, you instinctively know which article to use, but apart from that there's no real way to just "know" it. Even similar languages (article-wise) like French may assign a different gender to the same word. |
