As a nurse, yes I can confirm that is how we handle dementia patients. Reminding a man that his wife is dead only for it to inevitably be forgotten again (...) will just cause grief. (...) It's a fruitless, painful cycle. There is no cure for dementia.

One of my best friends is transgender. He is a man who identifies mentally as a woman. He has been suicidal in the past. I do not understand the irrational hate and discrimination they receive for the life of me. People who deserve hate are people who wrong others. Not people like my friend who fyi is a wonderful person through and through. Just feels like he should have been born a woman. The people who hate -- they're the real problem. A large part of the stress is fear of rejection from friends, family, and the rest of society. I'd say that's a pretty massive factor. Once that is gone, I believe trans people would have a lot easier time being happy with just being themselves.

I don't have any statistics, but put yourself in their shoes. It's not hard to imagine. To say it's a medical condition that needs to be corrected, that shouldn't be the focus. Imo. The focus should be on eliminating hate and discrimination. That's what's unhealthy.

Oh, yeah. I agree those are the kind of people that earned the hate they receive. I'm more trying to understand where these people come from, especially Because I'm trying to minimize disparity in how I view the world.
It's anecdotal evidence, but... research is also anecdotal evidence, so, I appreciate your reply.

I wouldn't overthink it if it doesn't affect you directly. All you need to know is that the most effective way to alleviate gender dysphoria has been proven to be gender confirmation treatment, be that hormones, surgery, whatever.
(...)
It used to be, some decades ago, that people in the care industry were supposed to correct any false beliefs or confusion that a person suffering from dementia expressed. The idea was to try and ground them in reality. Doesn't sound bad in theory, right? In practice, this means that when a man with cognitive decline asked where his wife was, you had to tell him that she was dead, inflicting a completely unnecessary grieving process upon him... and then have it happen again an hour later, and again, and again. It should go without saying that this wasn't actually helpful.
(...)
I think it should go without saying that such treatment of people could be considered nothing short of torture. It did nothing but cause completely unnecessary anguish and stress in people, and while that form of "treatment" was framed as being a way of trying to prevent mental decline... in truth, it was done because people cared more about how they wanted the patients to be than they did about figuring out what the healthiest treatment was.

Even in the case of mental illness, it is NOT always in the interest of the person in question to be treated in a way that tries to force them to conform.
(...)
It has been proven that gay conversion therapy does more harm than good. It has been proven that gender confirmation treatment is the most effective way to treat gender dysphoria. It has been proven that meeting people with cognitive decline where they are rather than where you want them to be is healthier and kinder to them. Someday we may find some alternate option of treating gender dysphoria, but until then, this is the best treatment we have.

Thanks for the insightful response. I really appreciate that.
And I'm not actually requiring you to cite the sources, just being pedantic and telling you so you keep it in mind to do so in future times, but, yeah. Wikipedia kinda trained me to see it this way - it's quality practice. If people did it all the time, more people would learn.

Frankly, I'm not even getting into this in any depth, because it's already clear this topic is a hot mess with no relation to the reality of how things are for anyone considered gender non-conforming. There's no point in engaging genuinely with this kind of rubbish. So the only reason I am here is to tell you, OP, as much. And if I, being non-binary, feel like that about it, I honestly doubt you'll drag many - if any - of the members of the board who have actually transitioned into this "debate".
As for the suicide rate among trans people, try checking out the murder rate first. It's a lot more revealing.
Now, it's 0730 and I have other things to do today. Good morning.

I mean, okay. I appreciate you telling me that, though I would've rather you told me what "the reality" is, since that's what I'm asking to begin with. I'll assume the thing about suicide rate refers to other people's responses. That last part makes you seem upset or tired?
It's unfortunate, it seems like you could've contributed.

So you're rambling while not really even knowing what you're even talking about, and you're asking a controversial topic to a biased community that generally has no legitimate knowledge (asking joe sixpack, whose knowledge consists of random stuff he read on the internet, on the safety of nuclear energy isn't going to produce useful information) on the topic and expect a productive dialog?

Sure. Naive? Maybe. That's what mistakes are for.

i know this is a joke but i can't disagree that this is a touchy subject and one that you can't really question

Try to question and criticize everything. That's how you learn. You can and should. It's definitely a "sensitive" subject, but I believe that, for any subject considered sensitive, it only hurts the people that try to learn about it.

Uhhhhh.... If you're arguing that feeling that you were born in the wrong body is a form of body dymorphism or another disorder, obviously somebody who actually feels that way will think that it's not an image disorder. I'm not sure what you expect. Unless this topic isn't about a perceived image issue and instead is about whether being born in the wrong body is a medical issue. I'm honestly not sure what you're trying to argue in this topic in general.
So basically you're not familiar with non-binary then?

Yes, it's whether "being born in the wrong body is a medical issue", or a thing that's possible to begin with. I'm not arguing a point, I'm questioning to try to come out with a better understanding.
And, I'm literally not familiar with non-binary people, I know the term exists, but I don't fully comprehend the scope of its usage.

It's a really nasty birth defect from failure to androgenize the fetal brain (MTF) or inappropriately androgenize the fetal brain (FTM). Fortunately, pretty rare. Since we can"t change brains, treatment means changing the body to match the brain.

I don't understand what that means. As far as I'm aware transitioning has nothing to do with fetuses.

Gaming Disorder is gaming addiction; being detrimental to your life. So, it's an extreme counterpart to normal gaming.
Do transgenderism/transsexuality have a similar relationship with gender dysphoria, or Not?

I've seen a trans person complaining on Discord that they were forced to leave a server because they were being harassed 'cuz people thought they were mentally ill.
Of course, it's not right to have done that, especially if the harassed has some medical condition. But the question is, is it true?
Obviously, it makes sense that you wouldn't admit to yourself you're mentally ill if you're not used to being self-honest and realistic. I think the kind of person to deny a medical condition (and I'm not saying trans have one; I'm questioning either way) is not used to doing either.
Also, it makes sense that if you see something as an insult you won't give any credibility to it.

So, what gives?

Is it a medical disorder? Is it unhealthy?
Doctors and transsexuals would be great to have in a discussion like this, but this is a gaming board after all - I can't expect that. So if you're not either, try to be open-minded.

From my non-researched point of view, I don't think you can be transsexual in the literal sense of the word. You can't go beyond your physical sex (trans>transcendental). I'm aware that might be a fundamental misunderstanding of what it means to be transsexual, but if the word means anything other than that, then maybe use transgender instead.

By the way, there's a difference between transgender and transsex. Also, I'm using the word "trans" alone as meaning "either of those two".

I have a feeling the rabbit hole runs much, much deeper. That kind of annoys me.

Because I wanna discuss the polls instead of random bullshit, and because it's inconvenient having to look for (board in title) within the site instead of just having the link be there. They could do this in less than an hour, it's just adding a link.

I find it hard to believe most people chew loudly.

It's easier to believe it's common practice in your particular area. If that's the case, I'm sorry to hear. If it's just you extrapolating one or two instances of one or two people doing it, either get over it or start calling them out. Nobody's gonna fix this issue for you if you sit there while your anger builds up.

I wonder what kind of video game an AI would create on its own.

Probably a garbage one. AI's can't code and can't make the complex design decisions required to make games, they'd definitely need a lot of stuff to already be done, which defeats the point of having the AI try to make a game in the first place.

It's time I quit all drugs.
I'm gonna limit one kind to a specific time of day and another to the weekends.

Follow your own advice and quit all of them. Not "later" either. Otherwise, maybe you shouldn't have bothered making this post.
Also, if dropping addictions are gradual processes or not is beside the point.

There's a difference between taking them for medication and doing it for the hell of it. And you know it.
