what i want to know is why "we really do need trump" when trump is trying to abolish an entire platform for having opinions he disagrees with right now

They're trying to censor him. If he can be censored anyone can.

How is it a post about protecting free speech when you're criticizing people for exercising free speech?

I'm criticizing people for trying to censor speech. Refusing to show speech in its original context and only presenting it with a side-by-side, point by point rebuttal is a form of censorship. Attempting to apply economic pressure to get someone to stop speaking is a form of censorship.

So, I made a post in the last topic about protecting free speech, and the person who created that topic immediately blocked me from posting in the topic. I have honestly never seen this person make a real contribution to the topic series in terms of a quality post with any real reasoning or argument. His posts consist largely of invective, personal attacks, and non-substantive attacks on public figures. I don't think the topic series would suffer any loss if this person were to stop posting. There's a reason I basically never respond to this person's posts, but he for some reason feels the need to repeatedly go out of his way to attack me, and now to try to silence me. It's really unacceptable.

Looks like the market liked that Fed news and didn't like Chairman Powell's speech as it proceeded to plummet through the speech. I think the market was looking for some concrete news of new money printing or quantitative easing or whatever you want to call it.

Moonroof, I think you are placing too high a percentage of your money into each stock. That's why you feel fear which is what drives you to sell too soon. Get the allocation per stock down to the point where you can eat a 100% loss without being too upset and you won't be shaken out by small downward movements.

Spoilers: In July, he'll say there isn't enough time to do anything before the August recess. In September, he'll say there isn't time to do anything before the October recess. What exactly happens after that depends on the election results, but I can assure you that no possible outcome leads to the Senate passing any COVID relief bills.

They're going to pass it just in time for the election so Trump can tout it and it will be fresh in everyone's minds.

Nasdaq has TLRD's earnings report listed as tomorrow. Not sure if that is accurate. Also, it looks like the board adopted a "shareholders' rights plan," which is commonly known as a poison pill, at the end of March. This kind of plan is designed to make it hard to for someone to take over the company by buying shares on the market. That shows the board was concerned with some outside investor buying the shares which would be bullish but I also get the feeling this board is not that competent so who knows.

I hope George Zimmer (founder) sold his shares in Men's Wearhouse (TLRD) when the board ousted him. It looks like with the way the stock has dropped since then, his 3.5% stake from back then would be worth more than the whole company is today. Maybe he can buy back control and fire the management who have run it into the ground apparently.

And before you say that poor and middle class people might spend their social security money - spending money to buy things you need is a better use of it than losing it by paying into a ponzi scheme. And for people who choose to invest it, I bet they can beat a -100% return. It's hard to do worse than that.

The Republican Party should, IMO, make it an official part of their party platform that they will not negotiate with corporate Democrats. Negotiate with poor people and their advocates on the left directly. No negotiation with moderate Dems!

Republicans are into making deals. Democrats are into screwing up and then blaming others afterwards. The Democrats' single biggest accomplishment in their entire history is to force poor and lower middle class people to pay into a ponzi scheme (social security), while the rich don't have to pay into the ponzi scheme and can invest their income in something that actually generates a return, making them richer. A lot of poor people in America today would not be poor if they could access the money they've paid into social security.

The only reason corporate Democrats are allowed to hold sway is because the Republican party exists and continually captures half the electorate, thus making their views seem more viable than progressive policies that haven't really found success yet outside of AOC unseating a Democratic incumbent.

Republicans are actually willing to consider policies that help the poor. That's probably why they have more success in elections than corporate Democrats.

This is true. You wonder why people hold to $20,000 and don't sell and lose it - it's because if they were going to sell and take profits, they would have done it at $10,000. Or $5,000. Or probably $1,000.

Green! One of my stocks is finally showing a gain for today (DAL). At this point more than 80% of today's losses are from TLRD. So let's fix that with a run back to $2.40 which it was at yesterday and then on to $4. I mean come on, Hertz ran to north of $5 and they actually filed for bankruptcy while all we have is an article saying unnamed people at TLRD are thinking about it.

Looks like stocks are going to open down today. I'm going to buy some TLRD, COTY, and UBER.

I may also buy back some DAL, which is really sad because I sold those shares at $25 a week and a half ago for a small profit and now I'm considering buying them back at $34. If not for LK tripling last week I think I would be really upset about missing out on about half the gain in CAR and DAL. Especially DAL, because I didn't buy at the bottom, so what I missed was way bigger than the profit I made. With CAR, I can't get too upset about exiting a trade at a 93% profit.

So Trump to win is at 45 cents on PredictIt. I would put some money on it, except that the way the market is these days, it seems like there's a lot of possible winning or losing on a much shorter time scale than 5 months.

In the last 2 and a half months the S&P 500 has gained about $9 trillion in value. That comes out to an average of about $30,000 for every single person (not household) in the country. And that's just 500 companies.

Moonroof there are a lot of algorithms trading on the market that place trades in a span of milliseconds. They are designed in large part to prey on less sophisticated/fast investors with stops, limits, etc. Obviously humans can't compete with bots that can trade multiple times per second. The stock could come back within a second but now your shares have been sold and the owner of the algorithm has taken some value from you. It may be unfair but it's part of the game.

Almost half of the float in HTZ is short trades right now lmao

So wait, can you explain how that would work mathematically? Is it basically that, if you short a stock at 5 and it reaches 10, they close out your trade?

They might call you first to ask you to put in more money immediately or else they close your trade. But if they can't reach you immediately they just close it. And yeah, if it opens at $15 you now owe them money. So supposing you have a $1,000 investment at $5:

$0: +$1,000
$5: +$0
$10: -$1,000
$15: -$2000
$20: -$3,000

Etc. There was a case a few years back where someone shorted stock of a bankrupt company with his life savings of 37k. Overnight the company announced that it had been acquired by a new investor. The stock opened at a big gain and the guy lost his 37k and was now 100k in debt to his broker.

I get that. But as long as the stock drops below where you short it at, at any time, you still profit right?

Unless it first advances past the point where you at are a 100% loss, then your broker closes out your trade and you get wiped out.

Anyone here short stocks? Thinking of dipping my toes in on HTZ with a modest amount, since I didn't actually buy. If you sell short, it sounds like the crash has to come that day in order to profit? You can't set a later expiration date?

A straight short position doesn't have an expiration date, it's like holding stock except that you owe stock instead of owning it. Be careful with that. Someone who shorted Hertz on Friday would have lost more than 100% today. The potential loss is unlimited.

It may have very briefly crossed $42. This is why mechanical stop losses are probably a bad idea. Better to watch the market yourself so you aren't force-sold on one of these fast movements. Retail investors got massacred with that "flash crash" in 2010 when the Dow fell 1000 points in 15 minutes and then immediately got it all back. People's stop losses triggered so their shares were auto-sold and by the time they knew what was going on the price had already risen back.

It's hard to find bargains now. Been trying for the past 2 days and found nothing. The fact that so many meme stocks (GNUS), bankrupt stocks (Hertz), etc. are getting seeing huge upswings now is also a sign of market euphoria.

That said, the downturn could be next week. It could be next month. It could be next year. It could be long after a short seller is forced into bankruptcy. Who knows.
