Corrik, when you were drunk driving they probably charged you the next day. It's not equal if police get a lengthy internal investigation before being charged while everyone else gets charged immediately and told to come up with bail money or rot in jail while waiting for trial.

If it's equality they seek, they can charge murder 1st degree as well. There's at least one appellate court in the US that said that you can form the premeditation needed for it in the time it takes to pull a trigger, so 9 minutes should be more than sufficient. No doubt a non-police officer in that situation would be facing 1st degree murder charges.

As for the slow burn plan, I'd make two minor changes.

1. Have their shifts be 18 hours.
2. No overtime pay.

Lots of people are going to die if you do this. No thanks to having a militarized police force that is exhausted and unhappy. They were too trigger-happy when working normal hours.

If you increase the pay you get police officers who are more comfortable economically and can take greater pride in their work. You also increase the ability to hire better people are there will be more and better applicants.

Basically the same dynamic applies to paying teachers more. It's the opposite of the rooting out bad apples approach. You're trying to change the systematic causes of the problems.

Bernie is trying to do things that can actually work (not just pass, although that's a big part of it, but actually work). The open insurrection a lot of people are advocating here will not work, you will lose and pressure will only be increased until you surrender.

On a side note, qualified immunity is basically "ignorance of the law excuses police officers from liability" so it's quite shocking the Supreme Court ever promulgated this doctrine. It needs to be swiftly repealed.

Math is weird. A 50% drop followed by a 50% rise actually is still a 25% drop. (100 to 50 to 75).

Yes, this is why levered ETFs like NUGT experience such extreme time decay. They are designed to double the daily performance of the underlying stocks. So if the underlying stocks are +5%, NUGT is supposed to be +10%. And if -5%, then -10%.

Suppose the underlying stocks are up 10% one day, and down 9% the next day. If you had bought them, starting from 100, after day 1 you would be at 110, and after day 2 you would be at 100.1, for a gain of 10 cents.

Now, suppose you bought NUGT instead. On day 1, it gains 20% and you are at 120. On day 2 it falls 18% and you are at...98.4. So instead of gaining 20 cents as you would expect, you lost $1.6.

This effect compounds exponentially over time and you get the result that while you would turned a profit buying gold mining stocks and holding them for years, by buying the 2x leveraged ETF you end up losing 99.9% of your investment.

Ignorance of the law does not excuse breaking it, right?

Ignorance of the law does not excuse breaking it. However, ignorance of the facts does. For instance, if you possess a backpack in which someone else has placed marijuana, but you don't know about it, you are not guilty*. If you know about the marijuana but don't know that it is illegal, you are guilty.

*This may not save you in Singapore, where you are presumed to be a drug trafficker for having more than a not-that-large amount of marijuana and there is a mandatory death penalty.

Okay serious question: when I bought GNUS stock this morning, I bought on margin as well as on most of the cash in my account. I basically wanted to buy as many shares as it would let me. But now it says I have a "margin balance" of -$13,669.36. What does this mean?

It says my account is worth $18,013.07 though. I've deposited 11k from my own bank account. Uhhh am I still up 7k from where I started? I never saw this negative margin balance until I found a very specific tab that shows it just now.

How much stock did you buy?

If that was enough, people wouldnt have had to protest

I think you're missing that a lot of people want to work because it gives them a sense of purpose, of satisfaction. Many people are not happy to sit at home and collect handouts. Even if you don't call them handouts and call it "interest" or "dividends" or "royalties" people still don't feel happy because they are bored and want to do something with their time and energy. That's why many people who inherited lots of money are still unhappy.

That would require that, as a country, we save for such events. It will take time and a lot of tax collection to build the kind of stockpile of money and resources we need to ride out an event like this. Unfortunately, no politician will want to do this because it means everyone's standard of living goes down a bit in the short run, and the voters want things to be better right away.

Britain didn't get away with it though. The end result was WW1 (and WW2 as a direct consequence), and the violent collapse of the empire. This isn't unique to Britain, basically every major European power had a bloody reckoning in the same time period, France, Germany, Russia, the Ottomans. And hey, I am originally from Britain and live in a country that both has extremely close ties with Britain now but also came out of that violent collapse, and let me tell you - they haven't forgotten or let Britain get away with it.

Every empire eventually falls. Power - and freedom - are both fleeting. That's the message of the song as well - the implication is that Britain will be free only so long as she rules the waves. I think in practice, great empires tend to be treated better by their conquerors than they treated the conquered. Attila did not, for instance, tear down Rome stone by stone and sow its fields with salt. Perhaps it's because exceptional cruelty and thirst for power is one of the things that makes you into a great empire in the first place.

Reminder that the US has a far-right leader in a colossal global role because of a system that both gives an inordinate amount of power to one person and an electoral system that effectively disenfranchises a large majority of the electorate.

I'd say I was surprised it took so long, but he's probably not the worst president on a historical level, so perhaps it is surprising that it took people this long to notice. The office of president shouldn't be this way, and it certainly shouldn't be elected that way.

You know the song Rule Britannia? The writers understood geopolitics very well:

When Britain first at Heaven's command
Arose from out the azure main
This was the charter, the charter of the land
And guardian angels sang this strain:

Rule Britannia, Britannia rule the waves
Britons never shall be slaves

Britain, the US, Rome, Mongolia, or any other great empire can get away with things other countries cannot. Because they have power. The writer of that song understood. Freedom is not the product of justice, fairness, righteousness. Freedom is won through power and it is in short supply in the world as only the few can wield power at any time.

If I thought Trump was a greater danger for our republic than the Democrats and liberals, that would change my mind. In this topic Democrats and liberals have been openly supporting violence and armed revolt. In doing so, they are attacking our republic, and our democracy. Democracy only works where the people believe in it, in the idea that we do things because the people vote for them rather than because those with power command them at the point of a gun. It is precious, and fragile, and we must defend it against these liberals.

To go on a bit further, the moderate Dems would absolutely prefer 10 Trumps to Bernie. Why? Because they know that Trump will not hurt their comfortable affluent lives. Under Trump, their 401k balance will keep rising. Under Trump, their salary will go up every year. Under Trump, they can live in their affluent gated communities and drink champagne and when anything bad happens in the outside world, they can just blame Trump.

Under Bernie, the wealth our economy has created since 1980 is going to have to be shared by all the people, not just 20% of them. The affluent will no longer have the privileged positions they now hold. Now, the actual super rich - I'm sure they'll be fine. They have enough money parked in the Cayman Islands or Switzerland or wherever to perma-vacation forever. But the merely affluent are going to have to accept people who went to worse schools than they did or didn't go to college at all as their equals and they are terrified of that.

Why did it drop so much? is that really such a reason for such a major drop? I assume there isn't and this is why you guys are so hot on it?

It's a Chinese coffee chain that just had its IPO last year. They admitted that a lot of their revenue numbers were fraudulent. Right now, it's not clear what the real financials are. It's not clear if the company still has the $1 billion+ in cash it raised from investors or if the executives were able to steal it. It's not clear if the business model is viable or if it was just designed to turn a quick buck for the founders by defrauding investors.

I think it's a worthwhile bet because if it's anything other than the worst case scenario, the stock is clearly worth more than $2 per share. Just the cash they raised from the IPO and subsequent offering alone is worth like $5 a share or so, and you gotta figure the thousands of locations they have in China, the brand, the data on millions of customers, etc. should be worth something.

I honestly don't know all the details but yes the general argument is that the police's authority is too broad and you would specialize the force into more typical professional jobs that are not "the police" as a generic authority role. One of the most compelling arguments is for mental health emergencies because police don't really have the proper training to be first responders for those. But also possibly things like traffic management and detective work - does a traffic cop really need a gun?

You'll still have a police force taking care of those criminals you mention but their scope and authority will be much reduced and focused.

No thank you. We all know that you want the gulags and reeducation camps for political opponents while no member of a favored class will ever be punished for anything. Trump 2020!

Well, I guess it may not be a great comparison as CSAD through 2004 or so mostly consisted of fairly high quality, longer posts. The rest of the board was used for poll updater topics and posts like "barrier breached!" and "Link he come to town." I think maybe we compare with CSAD starting from 2005 or something.

I do want to commend cnn for some amazing coverage and reporting the past few days. Some of the situations the reporters are putting themselves in have been absolutely nuts

My biggest turn off for them before this is just how insanely trump centric their coverage has been. Not because they have been anti-trump, that i dont really care about, but virtually everything was covered with him as the backdrop. If a meteor was coming to end all life they would have spent 95% of the time talking about his tweets or response to it

Its just nice to see them doing some incredibly awesome reporting, and when they do talk about trump it is being done in healthy doses and context

Yes, CNN has been very personality-centric for years. Before Trump, they talked incessantly about Hillary Clinton's opinions on things completely unrelated to her, like Russia's invasion of Crimea, even when she wasn't trying to place herself at the center of the conversation.

Yeah, it's time for Trump to send in the army. Once order is restored, long prison sentences are appropriate for every last one of the rioters.

Gotta say, I did not expect this take from Rudy Giuliani

I did however expect this take

https://twitter.com/rudygiuliani/status/1266531988552499201?s=21

Yeah we know Rudy just loves throwing people in jail. Didn't he have some kind of incredibly high conviction rate as US attorney for SDNY?

Nothing about police brutality is going to change as long as we keep on electing ex-DAs to high office. As far as I'm concerned, no one has to work as a DA. It's a choice. If you choose that career path, you are literally devoting your career to locking people up. It may be necessary for someone to do it, just like we need garbagemen, but I don't want to vote for you.

The Onion has been really good lately since they started calling out the moderate Dems for the champagne-sipping, privileged, selfish, imperialist, class-traitor medizers that they are.

Props to NYPD. I normally dislike New York and don't understand the appeal of living there but the police are professional and skilled.

Actually, I voted for FDR. I think he's pretty obviously the worst on this list.

Who was the worst US President?

We've had many bad presidents over the course of our nation's history, but who was the worst?
