Hell most Americans dont even make that much a month after taxes. But it is true that a contributing factor in some industries and surrounding communities is the need to work or face being totally ****ed every which way. Medical insurance is also often tied to work, and even then the for-profit companies find ways to stiff people on various technicalities, even when they are going in with the intention of getting tested for Covid-19. its really a reflection on how underpaid most Americans are --- Pinoy Pride, 1988 - the day I die! |

Even if we assumed you were going to make 60k a year on unemployment (very few will make that much) you don't really have a choice about going back to work or not. If your job calls you back you have to give up your unemployment benefits. Pretty sure most people would rather work anyway. | AzNDarkSamurai 06/25/20 1:54:46 AM #1 | Overall, the USA is one of the only first world countries (that I know of at least) that has no safety net at all for its citizens when things go bad. I hear that some countries in Europe will have its government take care of you during times you arent working. For example, if someone never worked, they would never qualify for unemployment. As a result, they would have missed out on the extra $600/week which would have been BIG help for a lot of families during this time when so many people are unemployed. Those same people would also be screwed on healthcare too if they lost their job because they will also lose their health insurance. On the other hand.... Im not sure if im comfortable with the idea of people earning money to sit at home and do nothing. Sometimes I think to myself.... is it really the governments job to take care of its people when people should be creating their own safety nets for when things go bad? Id love to hear some thoughts and opinions on this one --- Pinoy Pride, 1988 - the day I die! |
