It's probably because he hasn't done things that are disqualifying in my eyes. Like, saying that your VP pick will definitely be a woman. What an incredibly sexist thing to say, reducing the value of a VP candidate to their gender. Or, getting your son a $50,000 per month job to sit on the board of a Ukrainian oil company. Or being paid $300,000 to teach future 1%ers at Harvard Law. Or being paid $250,000 to give a speech to Wall Street bankers. Or making a 10,000% profit in 6 months trading cattle futures on insider information and getting away with it. Or refusing to endorse, 2 elections in a row, the one candidate who aligns with your stated principles nearly exactly, only to turn around and endorse someone with ideas antithetical to yours because they are not a Republican. Or calling half the country deplorable. Mayor Pete can disagree with someone without calling them deplorable. Without thinking they are deplorable. Right now someone's punishment is primarily based on how well they play poker with their life with the prosecutor, not based on what they did. Guarantee everyone a jury trial - if the state cannot afford it, then the state needs to admit that it does not care about the offense enough to be incarcerating people for it, and the offense needs to be decriminalized. That is to say, a jury trial should be required even if the defendant pleads guilty. The jury is not required to believe the defendant's confession. --- September 1, 2003; November 4, 2007; September 2, 2013 Congratulations to DP Oblivion in the Guru Contest! |

Probation gives a person both the motivation to commit crimes (by making their life miserable and making them feel like a second class citizen) and the means to do it (since they are free). Small offenses can be dealt with using corporal punishment or the pillory or something. Large offenses can be dealt with using incarceration. If no one died, there will be few lasting consequences from this. This protesters will be acquitted, or even if convicted will suffer few consequences. Because their community will not care about the conviction. I think it's not productive to focus on "police are bad." They generally aren't evil, and that isn't why we reach bad outcomes. Also, that's impossible to change and therefore produces no action. We should focus on how to change the system, rather than the cogs in the system (i.e. decriminalize drug possession, disorderly conduct, etc.). --- September 1, 2003; November 4, 2007; September 2, 2013 Congratulations to DP Oblivion in the Guru Contest! |

| red sox 777 05/04/20 2:42:54 PM #75 | I am quite confused with Warren Buffett's decision to dump airline stocks after they're down so much. The statement that things have changed would imply that the value of these companies has been cut by 2/3 due to coronavirus? That seems very unlikely, if they don't go bankrupt and it doesn't look like bankruptcy is going to happening with the government committed to propping them up. Personally, I'm hoping this explains why airline stocks did not follow the market up in April - that is, that Berkshire selling about 10% of these companies' shares on the market should have a significant negative affect on the stock price. In past recessions, it has been extremely common for the market to fall a long way, come back up a shorter but still long way, and then fall back down to the lows set earlier. In 2008 it was 15 months from the market top to the market bottom and in 1929 it was 3 or 4 years. | red sox 777 05/02/20 4:18:43 PM #13 | Part 2: The Green New Deal President Trump and Vice President Sanders announce a new Green New Deal for the country that will be paid for by confiscating and redistributing the wealth of class traitors. A constitutional amendment permitting redistribution of wealth for political purposes is swiftly ratified by 38 states with Republican legislatures. The Trump/Bernie administration then begins the Green New Deal confiscating all property owned by anyone who donated to Hillary's 2016 campaign or Biden's 2020 campaign and redistributing it to Republicans and socialists. Next, the government uses social media to track down everyone who is determined to have probably supported Hillary or Biden. Their wealth is all seized and used to pay for universal healthcare, free gourmet food for the poor, free guns for everyone, subsidies for tuition at private colleges run by Betsy Devos, and of course, handouts for billionaires. Of course after having seized 50% of the country's wealth, these people need to do work to survive, and therefore the government accomodates their needs by sending them to reeducation camps where they will learn how to be good citizens so that they may one day be rehabilitated. To save money, the country signs a treaty with Russia to use the existing reeducation camps in Siberia. Also, the FBI is disbanded and replaced with the reconstituted KGB. With the temporary dramatic decline in GDP that occurs due to 50% of the workforce being sent to be retrained, carbon emissions are dramatically cut. Meanwhile, the government touts the dramatically increased per capita GDP among Americans who are not in reeducation camps. --- September 1, 2003; November 4, 2007; September 2, 2013 Congratulations to DP Oblivion in the Guru Contest! |

| red sox 777 05/01/20 1:24:31 PM #39 | Moonroof, daytrading is basically like gambling. Some days it goes up, some days it goes down. You can win on most trades by following a strategy of selling quickly when you have a profit and holding or doubling down when you are down, but this is NOT in itself a winning strategy because the losses, when they do come, will be bigger than the winnings. That is to say, if you are actually able to predict the day to day variations, timing them is great, but if you don't have any more predictive power on them than random, the "money management" of strategy of cashing out small wins does not really help. Once the casinos are open again, you can fairly easily win on 90%+ of days by playing blackjack or roulette. You use the same strategy - bring a lot of money, leave if you are up a little, camp out and play until you break even if you are losing. You'll leave with a small gain on most days but when you do hit a big losing day, you'll give it all back and more. And that's because you won't have any really big winning days, since you always left when you were up a little. The difference between the stock market and the casino is that the casino offers actually negative expectation games, while the stock market is positive expectation. So if you use this strategy on the markets, you should make money in the long run - but that's not because of the strategy, it's because the market is positive expectation. And I think you'll probably make less money than with a buy and hold strategy because your money is spending more time not invested. It's really deceptive, because we like to attribute results to things we can see, like our strategy, and not to nebulous ideas like "the stock market goes up in the long run" or "all the games at the casino favor the house." --- September 1, 2003; November 4, 2007; September 2, 2013 Congratulations to DP Oblivion in the Guru Contest! |

So the takeaway is its perfectly fine and in fact better to sell early IF the stock ends up dipping after you sold it and you time it correctly. Well, buying back in is fine - but you should buy back in for the amount of shares you sold rather than reducing it to the original stake in dollars. Unless you want to take your profits and put them in something else of course. --- September 1, 2003; November 4, 2007; September 2, 2013 Congratulations to DP Oblivion in the Guru Contest! |

C is best because you are timing the market correctly. B is lower because you sold $1,100 worth of stock and only bought back in for $1,000 - so your profits from the first round weren't reinvested for the second round. If you hold for over a year, you can get a lower tax rate. --- September 1, 2003; November 4, 2007; September 2, 2013 Congratulations to DP Oblivion in the Guru Contest! |
