My general strategy is to run around loading up on good weapons, armor, etc. and then avoiding people as often as possible so that I have to kill only a few people to win. It routinely drives me insane when my team goes out of its way to fight someone distant or land in really popular areas where it's a matter of chance if you manage to get a gun right away or not.
