Sudden Visitor
Classroom
Laguerra del Mundo

Whoops, I was a dummy and lost my write up when it was almost completed, oh no. Meanwhile none of these matches were particularly close. Weight of the world more like wait of the world the song is 5 and three quarters minutes long got em. The song starts off with a cool mysterious air to it, but when the vocals start not only do I predictably not like the vocals but the genre switches from cool mystery to "pleasant relaxation" man heck that I'd probably be more relaxed listening to demon truck. On the other hand Sudden Visitor is just all around great techno stuff, although nothing about it ever puts things over the top. I mean the song also has it's fair share of things I don't really care for like that "dance" synth isn't my preference and there's that tiny whisper but really I'd listen to this over weight of the world any day. Pretty good usage of repetition in it too.

When I saw Classroom in nominations while like quickly skimmed through I thought "why'd it have to be this it has vocals" but really that's such a tiny part it's like a sound effect, if still unwanted. Aurora Memoria is really fun digital sounds with good variety in stuff and this song is no different, it's really great. Man in my favorites bracket I put Sudden Visitor over this no that's not right this song's much better. Other song in this match here is in my rank songs thing which IS COMING I SWEAR but this means I don't have to talk about it right now good. Well actually it's a different version I guess, the vocals are different. Wonder why.

Laguerra Del Mundo feels like big disappointment. The song starts off setting the mood with a Really nice surreal atmosphere, and then it just quickly transitions into an attention seeking electric guitar that does nothing of worth for me and just muddys everything up. The song does recover afterwards but it also doesn't get back to the level that the intro forecast. What A Shame. Meanwhile however the song it's up against is just all around unpleasant to me. When I say I don't like "moodysad" this song is an example of what moodysad means. ick, no thanks.

Mysterious Trap
Yesterdays Opponents are Todays Ingredients

first match the orica song is pretty fascinating, those mysterious bells, the atmosphere environment this song compels is real interesting in the variety of instruments and robo sounds. where are we. a shame about the vocals though. still this song manages to catch my interest more than the song of yesterday (and by that I don't mean the song today with yesterday in the title no I mean the song from this sort of game "gust" i think is what the jolly fellows call it) it is interesting there is a good amount of interest and when the mysterious atmosphere penetrates the girls who refuse to be quiet there is good to be found. meanwhile chant this charm in comparison ima be honest I don't really feel any positive emotion at all that's not good. closest you can get is "nostalgia" especially since dumb kid me would often leave games running on the menu and the tv on and thus tv menus would play and so I've heard this title song more times than I probably would want to which is to say more than once she sings i don't like but really those times would be back ground noise where I'd be busy doing something else and not really listening or caring I don't know how many times I actually left this game on but I do know when I would record video game play onto vhs tapes I recorded some footage of this game and then forgot to hit stop so like a whole 2nd half of this tape had the menu of this game playing over and over which includes this song I believe oh no I lost that video tape for about a decade and then I randomly found it again I never beat billy hatcher I got to like the last world and then there was a weird jump I couldn't make so I never beat it. about a week ago my family ordered a bunch of little chickens and they arrived there's 15 of them they are cute! there is one that is a "polish" breed right now it looks like it has a weird afro-like hairdo also it's eyes are very cartoony looking like that sideways D we're calling her Doodle it was my sister's idea anyway I don't have much to actually say about this song it has singing and then it also has kids singing and also it doesn't have appeal oh no.

two dragons hot take dragons are overrated especially if they are humans as this video seems to imply I click on the video it says "two dragons" I see two people ew. electric guitar for a harsh atmosphere its cool i can dig it man. but I crave for more this song feels too chill in this harsh atmosphere what an oxymoron. oh and it gets somewhere again its ok. like like like this song i it's okay but really theres not a lot about it that speaks to me some of the harsh bass sounds are good but then the high strings cancel out my "high" from that go away. I already know mysterious trap is like at least 1 tier of liking songs above this sort of thing. actually no I don't actually know that haha. the sorts of sort of uhhh european heritage feeling is not really a thing I look for hears songs. I seem to recall a certain toxitricity once gave an off comment that this song uses micro tones I think that's what they're called that sounds fascinating I have no idea if that actually improves it's listening ability for myself the part at :49 is so good it's worth voting for for that part really problem solved just like problem solverzzzz

"oh boy pop'n music I think I've heard some good stuff from this series before cmon show me the goods oh no this song starts off with a church chorus and it's also got a girl singing oh nooooooo. okay there's a fun rhythm. just the one. nah there's a couple. like 1:41 fun buuuut that doe s not overcome the hurdle of vocal girl that makes me want to not be listening. that's a bad feeling for a song. i have stayed up too late don't ask so this write up post may be a tad bit silly I apologize for nothing it's good enough. yoatti is the kind of song that feels good but i don't want to listen to it a lot I guess some thing like that i don't know how to explain these feelings this feels like a song that should win a couple rounds but not a lot but I am not the only voter in these here parts there's good in this song like :17 is real nice but also that instrument at :28 I don't think I can stand that instrument right now. song is solid right now in any case it's not on my nerves (yet) any ways this match really aint close one of these songs inhibits behavior I find unfortunate and the other one is good enough so it is good enough in summation I'm done with this post in this essay i will

Running Hell
Battle YAS 2

Cloche has some cool mechanical stuff going on and the vocals aren't totally focused on for the most part unlike other songs which is good because I don't like them. So while the vocals bring it down a bit, the song certainly has potential, but it doesn't ever really go anywhere strong, and is instead maybe a bit repetitive. The piano playing with loud & quiet at 1:04 is cool but again, it barely does anything with that. Other song -- Cave Story +? I was surprised to see someone go with this version instead of the original in nominations, and I still am. In a case like this it really feels like the right move is to go for the original, considering the "update" to the song doesn't really remix it in any way, and any "improvements" are too subtle and subjective that many people will probably be more likely to want to go for the original for nostalgia or other reasons, especially with how strong it is. And then of course there's the sad story of rights involved behind the making of CS+ and what not. But, here we are, with CS+ Running Hell in the contest. Ah I'm one to talk though I'd absolutely prefer S3&K PC versions of sonic 3 and or knuckles' songs even with most of the nonexclusives but I digress. This here still a good tension song. The section at :46 is very nice & makes good use of the potential of the song unlike opponent managed to do for me.

Wild that Battle YAS 2 is right next to CS+ Running Hell in the bracket even if separated by a single match round. BYA'S 2 has a very indie retro beepy sound to it but these sorts of beeps are a bit generic and unappealing to me, but still more appealing than realistic orchestral stuff. Like TurnabouTime song has an instrumentation I'm less into especially the high strings but it has some cool tunes about it like the little rhythm at :57. This match is actually really close for me! BYAS2is kind of dull at times but does also have moments I can get into. The same can kind of apply to Turnabout Time Too but I feel like the lows & highs are both just sliiightly higher than in BYAS2 but, the instrumentation difference equals them out! oh no! Aah, I think ultimately though when I think of the two songs I'd rather listen to BYAS2 so there's my vote.

Toc match if we had only one tie and none of that test the flaming bonds over and over then the day this match would've happened would have had 5 vocal songs and then also the one song I got in the contest wow anyway I don't really feel like listening to these so because it's the toc I will abstain once again.

The Filthy Mind (Theme of the Hive Mind)
Jazzy NNYC
Flaming Bonds are Being Tested

Today is "crazy close matches with songs I wasn't into at first but have grown on me to make matches hard now" day. What the heck. So The Filthy Mind unlike the other Terraria Calamity songs during nominations, just wasn't particularly great for me. Maybe that nasty intro partly turned me off. Maybe the other TC songs just work better for me. But at least standing on it's own it's not bad. Good dark dramatic. The sorts of keys/tones in the section from like :10 - :28 gives me a deep nostalgic feel as if it reminds me of somethings I played a while back, like Torin's Passage or DK64. I wasn't too happy with the intro of this song on it's own but when it kind of fades in and lingers in the partial distance, at 1:16, complete with a little unstable glitching, it works really well for the song. What really makes the song for me isn't the fast paced guitar stuff or drums but the backing tones. Which might be made from the high strings I keep complaining about, well tastes don't have to make sense. Less interested in the part at like :46 where those backing tones seem to be absent and instead we've got this whistle that feels like some western fighto. Drum beat during this part is at least pretty neat. Meanwhile the other song, it's a neat little calm peaceful cavernish tune but I don't like the calm peaceful genre it sets out to be. It's kind of a neat little atmosphere it puts me in though. I kinda like that ringy percussive instrument at the start. Hm, I sort of figured I'd have more to say about this. This match feels less close when I think about it but Sand Canyon 3 is alright.

So similar to what I had mentioned before, I wasn't entirely into Disco Necropolis during nominations. I loved +TEK's stuff in AGHR but was less interested in skeleton boomerang, maybe because I really do not care for corny halloween spookio stuff. Maybe because I feel like a lot of my childhood was robbed of Halloween but that's a story for another time. Anyway this IS still +TEK and I love a lot of their stuff which ultimately shines through here. When the instrumentation is not corny halloween junk it's the stuff I really love except for the saxophone which I can have mixed feelings on but it works okay here as neat jazzish. Also I really love the loop point here, it's like the beginning of the song works really well on it's own and yet at the same time it's also half of a "thought" that just runs smoothly during the loop. Nice stuff. Jazzy NNYC the saxophone comes off as less appealing to me than in DiscoNecropolis go figure like I said nothing makes sense. That said the full jazz paths that this song takes are all really good, pretty much all except the very first part which gets repeated but that's still okay. And then after a bunch of the fun jazz chaos it gives a downfalling moment of peace and the song's great okay.

Then we've got the toc which I've already said was close before but I didn't change my mind before lets see if I do this time. oh no it still feels super close quit tempting me to flipping. I think I'll stick with where I was. The other main matches today feel like they should be really close too but at the same time my decisions feel pretty confident about what I prefer compared to this.

Bad End Syndrome
Bitbop
Rapal

The first 5 seconds of BES is such a sweet happy piano melody. Then soon after vocals start but Alice Schach proves to once again be some of the more enjoyable vocals to be listening to. Maybe it's the fictional language. Which ever language this is beats the Nier one for me. Though the upbeat nature of the song certainly helps too. But also especially many of the little minor key change stuff that goes on like around :32, pretty good stuff. Other vocal song has little for me to enjoy.

Kinda same with the next vocal song over in the next match, though some thing about it's tone is more enjoyable than shadowbringers shadow bring ers. Something like how it feels less "standard" and more distinct or so for here. The part at 1:59 sounds like it has the potential to lead into the sort of toned section I would like but just kind of, doesn't go the full distance. Doesn't really matter, it's up against the one song I managed to bring to the contest, time to see how useful I was. The song has me in the title wow what a coincidence. Bitbop is a really great song with a bunch of digital mechanical fun silliness. In some weird way it feels weird trying to write up for this song because most other songs here are kind of like discoveries to me but this one I brought to the table instead and have listened to a bunch going in which for some reason makes my creative writing not flow. That and I'm really not particularly in much of a mood for write ups but this day is one that would be a good one for write ups. Song just keeps up the mechanical fun all the way through in a variety of different methods and tunes and they're all great stuff for me, definitely a top song of the bracket for me

Toc match is annoying in a way because daddu mulk is more of the medium of music I prefer being "Sega CD" synthish stuff but the actual tune is like, okay at best, kind of uninspiring whereas Rapal is the realistic instruments and especially screechy high strings that I do not prefer but it's tune is much nicer and gives a very nice output, good sound scape. A variety of different sections that work out very well and sound quite nice. Like those at 2:00 and 2:15. Good key changes. What does the other song have again? robo vocals saying a few words words a lot of times one of which is "Daddy." well I assume at least, I'm never any good at understanding vocals. Nah some parts of the song are ok but really , I feel like this song sort of let me down kinda there that's my write up EDIT: whoops I wasn't done proofreading because I said this was close initially but in actuality it really wasn't

Mirror Temple (Mirror Magic Mix)
Thermosphere
Flaming Bonds are Being Tested

Match 1 is mirror temple is cool like a night out at mystery and chasing day break rain fails to catch my interest too much though it has some real cool key changes in the middle like 1:06 but the instrumentation and the occasional chanting is less preferable so easy pick here..

Match 2 is probably the two highest songs that have appeared in a match together for me so far, both are great and whichever loses becomes prime candidate for wildcard material which is frustrating because I sort of want Hoi Level 5 to be wildcard too though my main concern for yesterday was for Hoi to not lose to one of if not my least favorite song in the bracket and then it did so I am sad anyway. But any way this match is a thing. Midnight Lady is an interesting song that I got to replace the Surface music in La Mulana Randomizer, which was an interesting experience because I opened that one little path that just connects two areas inside the middle of the rocks long before I actually got out to the real surface so whenever I'd pass through I'd hear that radio stuff before getting to the real music. And the real music is good stuff, a lively strong beat that I can really get into. :46 with that saxophone which often I do not like but this case is good, is a real nice section with a retro nostalgic jazzy night feel. Song may be a little repetitive and doesn't go a lot of places but is still solid through and through though guess what I don't like when the people speak up. Thermosphere has a less appealing beat that's like in the uncanny valley of not good slow or good fast but in the middle. But the instrumentation is much more distinct and interesting for me. The piano part that starts at like :41 I like less for the simpler instrumentation and it lasts for quite a bit, then we get back to the starting part again which is good still and then we get to 2:15 which is great, it's slow but has great digital sounds and an atmosphere of wonder, what a world. This is a difficult match! Midnight lady is like a solid consistent line of quality whereas Thermosphere's line of quality is much more wavy and dips below Midnight Lady at it's low points and rises above it at it's high points. But I feel like Midnight Lady being so "consistent" is a slight flaw on it's own because Thermosphere has more variety (the radio does not count!). Therefore Thermosphere is my gut pick here and I can't come up with any arguments to counter this decision.

Toc Tiebreaker was closer for me than the Zadok match so I'm giving this more of a real thinking relistening effort to see if my viewpoint has changed. Actually I think I like Douwa Kairou a bit more this time but not enough for me to push it over Quite yet so I'ma look at the write ups from last time to see if anyone's write ups can convince me to change. Hm maybe not that was probably a silly idea. Eh, both songs have strengths and weaknesses and while Douwa Kairou feels more "distinct" it just fails to really catch me as much as some of the varied parts of Flaming Bonds does, like at 1:40. I'll stand by my earlier vote.

Level 5: Main Theme
Battle! Giratina
Zadok

oh boy here we go. Kaine exudes many traits I very much do not care for -- Simple piano instrumentation, slightly moody sad feeling, heavy vocal focus. Little else. There is a good chance this is not just a bottom song for me, but THE bottom #192. It really ain't my kind of song. Still better than last year's #192 for me though?? Like at least there's some kind of positive upbeat outlook shining on through this instead of true full moodysad. And that distantspring high percussion sound is a kind of nice sound, even if it's just a once-per-loop addition thing. But meanwhile, it's opponent is very much my kind of thing, quite likely a top 10 song for me! Cool Amiga Digital Synth Sounds. Start off with some very atonal destruction that reconstructs into a something and it is a very strong some thing! Like when it is done with the destruction and the true song begins it works so well, the bit at :22 -- The way the instrument in focus works slowly with the more active, but slightly quiet "middle" instrument with a repetitive pattern, it just, that section works real well for me! It's an active adventurous feeling, it isn't upbeat but instead has that slight feel of something is wrong. There is surely a better way to describe what I mean but it's not like overly sinister either, just slightly dissonant, the right amount for me. :38 works as a good section of growth of the starting :22 bit before working back into that very bit. I will admit I am less of a fan of the second half starting at like 1:09, after getting rid of the more focused-on half of the instruments before working them back in. After they do get reintroduced the bit at 1:49 does get back to the great feeling that the earlier portions of the song had, but with perhaps more of an egyptian kick to it, nice quick little flurries of the notes, before looping. Great stuff! In a way perhaps the instrumentation works against it in a way since there is somewhat little variety in the sorts of sounds it has, but I still love what it's got anyway

Next match once again we have a song filled with plenty of noises I don't really want to hear in it's instrumentation & vocals, though the high dark energy it has is nice, and I can go back and forth between whether electric guitar is good or bad, and the beat at 1:32 is good stuff. But meanwhile the opponent is once again way more my kind of song. More of that dark energy but now with a nicely varied digital gba synth sound, and it gives off a very chaotic atmosphere with perhaps a similar "off" vibe that Hoi Level 5 has (or maybe I just know the contexts for these two songs too much). It does not take long for this Giratina battle to get into action so fast that it very quickly enters one of those "wrong calm" states at :16. Love how the percussion sounds "recharge" and build up speed. Less of a fan of the next calm part it transitions to at :22 but the fast paced sounds going on in the background work very well. And then the action really picks up again and really there is A Lot of great variety in the chaos of this. Man I hope that both this and Hoi can advance to the next match so that it can be Distortion world vs. Distortion World even though honestly it would probably be one of those difficult choices of incredible songs that other people seem to dread. Like this song is super impressive,, but well I'm getting ahead of myself in wishful thinking here.

Very strong feelings on both of those matches and I will be some what sad if either does not win. Additionally Tiebreaker was not particularly close in the decision I already made yesterday so that being said this is a new candidate for "easiest day" even if my feelings for Zadok / Distant Sky aren't ridiculously strong it's still a decision I already made and stand by.

Frey's Philosophy
Moonstruck Blossom
Zenith

Okay I'm starting to get somewhat exhausted at the sheer amount of songs with vocals here. Were there less last year or something? Maybe the problem is more complex than that such as going too long without a song for me to be hype over. A lot of this is honestly probably poor timing of a dry spell though because really there's like 6 or 7 songs I could maybe get hyped for coming up in just the next 4 days not even counting toc. Well anyway despite that I'm still voting Frey's Philosophy because the song has an active beat that is more my thing than E102 Gamma which melodically or something comes across as really "plain" and does not keep my attention. Also Frey's vocals are just chanting chorus which aren't really that much of a focus and E102 Gamma has robovoiceman. Ciel & FaceoFact are not my types of songs however and their opponents are more enjoyable to me.

Thermal Base 1
Zadok
Flaming Bonds are Being Tested

I have Context for Confronting Myself this time as I have played through most of Celeste between now & last contest. Does this change things ?? I don't know it probably does on some psychological sub-level! in this song I Like the digital electric guitar bass thing and how it works with the fast beepy beeps. Those make a decent pairing a nice duo but still needs some thing. And I would argue that normal Celesteish Night Sky Sounding instrument is not what I am looking for nor certainly would it be chanting be quiet you people. They are quiet for the most part to be fair. And the part where they start glitching up at 2:10 is pretty neat but in effect that just makes me hunger for more glitch. Don't just glitch the worst part of the song glitch up the Whole Thing please and thank you. Other song here is Thermal Base 1 and I enjoy the beginning part that sounds like the metallic madness thing from a sonic CD I think that is what I am thinking of here. While this song is pretty solid through and through, it also feels very... passive. It's quite enjoyable, but I think I also have a hard time really pointing out much notable about it (Even though I supported it?). Like don't get me wrong it's nice stuff, I guess it's just , "not catchy" ? I hardly have any idea how catchiness works so maybe that shouldn't matter. I'm overthinking this.

To the distant sky has a pretty cool bass I Mean Oh No Another Cool Song vs. Less Appealing Song With Vocals Match. Zadok is a weird name this song is likely my favorite still in this division.

Tocmatch, I don't really care for the realistic instruments that Flaming Bonds uses, though the little digital spirit flying by at like 1:37ish is quite nice. Doesn't last too long though. This song does go places and while I don't really care much for them, I don't despise them either, so this worldly variety is nice. Also y'know I don't really care much about the instrumentation in Dowa Kairo either. It's got a nice strong beat but I don't like the moodysad piano loop it does even if the rest of the song is not moody or sad. Hmm... When I first heard FBaBT I thought I was going to be voting for DK here especially with how much I've been leaning into the VGMC13 songs in this toc but I guess FBaBT is growing on me more with it's variety, it's quite nice, and also I had forgotten exactly what DK is and it is okay but okay is okay.

Heading Back to Town
Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke
1NF3S+@+!0N (Theme of Crabulon)

I think I started a write up here and then lost it so now I have to start over oops. First match is maybe closer than you might expect for me. Both songs have long atmosphericish intros that I kinda just want to skip and then have traits appealing to me while also incorporating traits I pretty strongly despise. for instance in DBS the fast rising digital bass is really cool to me and the occasional screeching noise is, pretty weird but intriguing in a sort of good way? But I really don't like the vocals of course. Meanwhile HBtT has some fun rhythm stuff in the drums & bass and like what that piano starts doing at 1:11, and when the bass plays in reverse it's neat. But I loathe those high strings, potentially at an even higher amount than I do with the DBS vocals in my current mood, especially when I find the melody they play in the first half so boring. Things get kind of better with the drums with it at like 2:08 but still... I also prefer the overall instrumentation of DBS over the instrumentation of HBtT. Only the waterdrop type stuff in the back at 2:30 is appealing to me in HBtT in that regard. But ultimately what I think makes the difference for me in the match is -- in HBtT my dislikes are sometimes the focus, and sometimes they're gone and what I like is the focus instead. In DBS my dislikes are pretty consistently the focus what I like is just the backing. Also even DBS occasionally has I think a saxophone that sounds like the accursed high strings so I dislike that too. Anyway my decision's made now enough of listening to those songs.

Other two matches are still more of the same old "cool song vs. less appealing song that also has vocals" so I don't feel like doing write ups because I'm still in a messed up mindstate. Though maybe Personasong could have stood a chance without the vocals.
Maybe this will be the year for Rtfm, I think there's only one other song still in this division that I'd vote over it possibly.
Hm, all 3 matches today included one song from last VGMC...

The Cold Science of Supremacy
Flotage (Stage3-B)

So this is something that I am absolutely overthinking and probably don't need to say but I hate the potential of being misunderstood and yesterday when I mentioned 1:31 of beyond the darkness I wasn't saying it was a moment I particularly enjoyed. Okay actual write up time. Sky of Twilight has a focus on vocals and electric guitar, but is pretty good otherwise, especially bits like 1:47. When the singer is not singing there is a pretty song scattered here. Meanwhile TCSoS is my kind of Dark & Mysterious song, it is those traits done quite well! Like :45 where the real main stuff starts happening, but also the stuff going down beginning at 1:46 where it all goes away and it returns to the emptiness it began with, a fluttering buzzing remnant shows face before the main stuff makes it's grand reappearance. Great dark mysterious stuff.

Dodonpachirisu was one of my favorite discoveries from BOST and this song is a part of the reason why it's pretty great harsh digital activity. the bye bye for now part seems laughably out of place it's like an old commercial sample seeming or something. Anyway the other song also known as Desert is much less my kind of thing for the vocal focus, more peaceful realistic instrumentations. Easy match for me.

skipping toc again probably

oh no beyond the darkness lies a number of aspects I don't really care for but at least :34 kind of recovers w/ a "cool" feeling vocalless section and then also 1:31 wait isn't that speed star kanade play that song instead that song is funnier. Really though this song is "alright" and I wouldn't say it's unpleasant to listen to but at the same time I'm not really all that interested in doing so. It's not my cup of tea (I don't drink tea) but it has bits that help recover I feel like there's a better word to use here but I'm not thinking of it. Hinagiku sounds like a weird song I like weird songs but the vocals particularly bring this one down. Like straight up I think I'd go hinagiku no brainer here if the vocals were straight up removed. But she's so slow and moody that I feel like it impacts the song stronger than Beyondarkness did. Hrm. It's like, the weirdness of the song makes me want to vote for it. But the vocals make me want to not even though the other song also had vocals! Aaah... Well ultimately when it comes down to it I'd rather hear Hinagiku again thanks to the weirdness of that backing music, let weirdness prevail!

oh gosh a game boy song in the toc I didn't realize this system ever had anything do good here. Why the heck is this gameboy up against amiga r1 who did this wow I'm actually angry about a match up. Really though Metal Beat is alright but it's pretty plain. Stuff like :51 is cool but overall this song is Just alright, no further. steelchambers2 is great all the way through with a number of different sections I can get into so even with my Anger of this match up it's easy going like really steelchambers has the potential of being my favorite song in the toc, especially since the only other one I thought could compete for that title for me doesn't seem to be in it hm maybe I was wrong and that it didn't retire that's a shame it should've. I don't know many of the songs from vgmcs12 and before so they could still beat that but from what I understand it's some what unlikely.

Faint Dream ~ Inanimate Dream
Partizans
Endless Nine

Sky tower to me feels like an alright song that I don't entirely understand why people single it out over the rest in a soundtrack. Maybe it has to do with the way it's like a slow + emotional + "hopeful" piece = those things don't typically work for me. Your mind games to make me feel relaxed or hopeful will not work! So this is just okay. The mix of realistic instruments with the more beepy artificial stuff is interesting in a decent way. funny clock tower. Meanwhile oh no controvery in the land of Touhou looks like someone submitted a fake version of synthetic music because it was "remastered" in a way that hardly even improves the outcome for me. Nah I prefer the crisp crunchy original style. It's a cool piece I like it Mysterious Battle under the Old Night Sky

Match 2 feels like a frustration of a match because the two pieces kind of appeal/disappeal to the same part of me, two slow-ish (but not truly slow) pieces with nontraditional instrumentations mixing realism with digital slightly, giving atmosphericish vibes. Genuinely it's very hard to decide which one I would rather see advance!! Additionally, both have decently strong starts that later fall into less-good-but-still-fairly-good sections for me. Mm... With ElectriSimCity I do like the way the tune flows starting at 1:10, though various weak points of the song are that some of the more weaker sections kind of drag on for a bit. Partizans does not have this issue, but I'm not as much of a fan of the goofy jester sort of vibe at like :31. Golly, what a close match, the scales sure are balanced here. I do particularly like the section of Partizans at 1:40 as well though, and it Is more concise without winding up dragging on. Yeah, yeah that's what I've decided on.

toc match - huh. I've totally heard a variant of this Rivals of Aether song in my La Mulana Randomizer stuffs but I didn't download anything from the toc for that. Did someone nominate another version of this song? Eh well I like it it's cool even if it tries going for a "hopeful" vibe neat beeps good instrumentation. Endless 9 sounds like a news broadcast oh no breaking news there are 9s for days they just keep on coming. Oh no (actual) this seems to be one of the cases where I pretty distinctly prefer the instrumentation of one song and tune of the other. Okay actually the bit at 1:15 of the endless 9 broadcast is so cool to me it'll get my vote so long as the rest of the song doesn't do something to offend me. Oh no this slow orchestral string moment is trying to. Talkingman doesn't count he's funny and Out Of Focus. But Yeah no yeah this is still a cool piece with a couple of Really great parts meanwhile LAEXOST7 is more just like neat beeps man

Miracle Matter
Cloak of Darkness
Battle!!

I sort of feel weird about the inclusion of Miracle Matter here -- a much younger version of myself used to really like this song, I think. But more recently maybe a couple of years ago I revisited stuff of this game and got pretty into just the normal boss theme! And then as for this it's like, alright but just alright. Like the parts at :27 & :48 kinda just feel like they're missing something. I dunno. Still though the Other song here isn't my kind of thing so this is still an easy match but I did like the sort of key change going on at 1:45 of Other Song.

Cloak of Darkness is cool all the way through. Section at 1:44 is real nice. Eulogio is alright but focuses around too many aspects I don't care for in the instrumentation and chorus (which is at least not that much of a focus). Ending of it was pretty good though.

in toc, slag dance has a slightly more appealing instrumentation for me but also electric guitar, but I prefer the fun stuff Torna battle with the two exclamation marks brings to the table.

In Circles
L L ~Infinite Beating ver~
Battle With Saruin

Match 1 is actually pretty close for me. The way Megrarhapf is a sort of orchestral, grand piece, doesn't particularly appeal to me. But the sort of rhythm thing going on at the part at :13 is pretty neat! But the rest of the song leaves me pretty uninterested. In Circles, while it has English Vocals, it has a more appealing instrumentation, and while it's slow and "sad", it's my kind of "sad" (Like it's not Emotional sad, but more thoughtful sad? I really need to figure out a proper terminology between the two because my opinion on them will very strongly differ). The part where things take a turn for a harsher mood at 2:20 for a bit before returning to the calm works really nicely. This feels like another instance of a close match where I want to vote for the song that left a larger impression on me, which in this case is In Circles. I say it left a stronger impression but at the same time I can't actually remember if this song was in last year or not. If it was maybe I'm in more of a mindset for it this year or some thing.

Match 2, Prinnysong is alright. There seems to be some fun variety stuff but for some reason I'm just not getting all that into it. It feels like it's some weird half-step not far enough in terms of "intensity" for me or something, but meanwhile L-L is like an extra step forwards in intensity, it stole the missing intension. I can behind the power it's putting off all the way through. funny drum sollo.

Match 3, I feel like I've run out of write ups in the first two I don't feel like writing more except the saxophone remix big blue song I know from smash makes me laugh for some reason I don't know why or how to explain. Really this match is really close for me but I think it's the part at 2:25 of saRuin that Just pushes it over for me. Maybe it's more actually I dunno that's my vote cool songggg

-[Deoxyribose]-
Shop 'til You Drop
Servants of the Scourge

Chemistry song (well the first one I guess) has a lot for me to like about it with the strong synth beat stuff. I'm not a fan of the strings or choir chanting, or the slow part near the end, but really it's still a great song despite those parts, thanks to the other parts ! Meanwhile Fear Not This Night is likely a bottom-2 song for me in this contest -- Filled with the stuff I actively do not want to listen to. It's Emotional Sad, Slow, Orchestral/Piano, and Lyric Singing. Well, ... actually I guess giving it a "fair" listen now it doesn't feel as much like a "bottom 2" song where the more "hopeful" sections flowing through are kind of alright, but it is still certainly a "bottom" type song for me so this match is still super easy.

Meanwhile I dislike Snake Eater for many of the same reasons I dislike Fear Not This Night!! Especially since the singer feels like she's got more of a focus here wow maybe this should be the one in my "bottom 2." Anyway Mr Domino Goes Shopping And You Can Not Stop Him But Perhaps You Can Drop Him And That Is When He Will No Longer Be Shopping is certainly nowhere near my bottom. No it is far more of a Top song for me with the cool synths. Though since the contest has begun it's already started to "fall" for me but I'm still super into it but I don't care much for the voices but at least they're not much of a focus. Really some of this inspired me to listen to the whole Mr Domino soundtrack and dang there's a bunch of great stuff on there! Really I feel like this Shopping song is one of my lower ranked ones. But yeah this is another ridiculously easy match for me.

Hi Draheteromycin is a song that features a focus on singing, with electric & non electric strings as backing, and it is versus one of my favorite retired songs from vgmc13. It gets better for me when the singing stops so I'd take it over the other two singings today but really it hardly stood a chance for me against Servants of Scourge so three very easy matches today, perhaps my easiest day of the entire contest which unnerves me because I have worry that people will disagree with me and then I can feel bad when my votes don't win. I'd much rather have to try to decide between 2 great songs going up against each other than have songs I love get eliminated by stuff I extremely do not

Final Destination
An Endless Desert
Chloe

the story behind how like Toby Fox gets invited to do a song for big giant fanchise pokemon and decides to reuse tune of a thing he got banned from a forum for continues to make me laugh. Song is pretty good too even if I feel like it doesn't really feel like a pokemon song to me but I skipped Gen 8 so maybe I don't know. FD is good stuff too, it's got like this calmer atmosphericish variant of the Metal Fight theme from 64. The different sections it transfers between at :31 and :40 are real nice to me. I sort of feel like FD has a bit less "substance" than BT but I'm still just a bit happier with the result of FD. Close match for me, both good songs.

in WotPhase2 The backing tune at about :35 reminds me of something big but I can't remember what oh no I can't guess the video game music. Anyway the song has too much I don't care for, the instrumentation, the man singing, and doesn't really do anything to really impress me. On the other hand the endless desert has some interesting rhythms about it, a slightly nicer instrumentation set, and No Man. Pretty easy vote for me.

Golden's Laughter has a pretty interesting start but it also takes quite a while to get going and when it does it doesn't particularly impress me at first. But after the harpsichord gets introduced I can kind of get more into it (again?). It's alright. I don't like Miss Chloe's instrumentation as much but the rhythm's are much more fun and engaging and as a result I'm a bit more enthralled with this song basically all the way through than I ever really was of the other one so I dunno this match felt close but maybe it actually isn't

Match 2 both songs involve stuff not my kind of thing but Suite Photocon incorporates stuff that also is so it can be kind of cool. Toc is Really close for me but like I said earlier, Strike the earth is kind of growing on me, and also I sort of feel like the 7:22 timer for Innocemptiness works against it for me, given the kind of song that it is.

FLIGHTLESS
Dreamy Somnom Labyrinth
Flash Frost

so I've been doing la mulana randomizer playthroughs lately where I've been replacing all the songs with random stuff, such as vgmc entrants. Recently I got a run where flightless randomly happened to be...the little death jingle. Sure, it only plays roughly the first 2 seconds of the song, but gosh dang if those first 2 seconds aren't a heck of a good death jingle. Flightles is one heck of an experience. the part at 1:10 reminds me a lot of one of the fake planets in Magic Schoo Bus Solar System PC Game, the one with the alien and the spikes you cut or put gum on. Then the song immediately transitions to what reminds me of another fake planet from MSBSolar but this time the one with the quadrants and music (it's the flightless guitar). There's a lot of weird ness & variety going on here, a lot of weird digital effects that I can definitely appreciate like the reversing note followed by stutters at right at the beginning almost :10. This song does overstay it's welcome sort of being 10 minute sand some slow SAD stuff are less enjoyable for me but this is still a heck of an experience and I'm glad to have. Hello Penguin, where is the 2 is the penguin a 2. The digital voice reminds me of stuff like hypnospace. I guess I should say something about the opponent but I kind of don't feel like it, like it's okay with cool digital stuff but also vocals focus and anyway it's kind of average ish for me.

Match 2 is honestly really close for me. Longcaps title song has a pretty heavy orchestral string focus with it's instrumentation which isn't really my thing. Despite that however, I can still get really into the fun activity of this song, good active rhythms. So it still works quite well for me over it's disadvantage. I dunno, like the Whole Thing is a solid above average, it's real nice, though no part about it ever stands out to me, in either direction so that's kind of a good thing? Problem is, the other song is Also good and above average for me! It's a nice relaxing calm exploration ish piece. Kind of reminds me of Freddi Fish Maze Madness stuff in a way. The way the music does that strong burst of a return from the more quiet stuff at 1:05 is so nice. Really this match is super close for me but I feel like the strengths of Somnom and like how it feels more "memorable" to me or something work for me Just slightly better than GUERRAN so , sorry! could maybe be a good wildcard candidate whichever one loses here.

3rd match is ALSO very close but I don't like these songs as much but they're still okay. mmm, Meaning of Birth comes off as kind of plain to me so on repeated listening I'm less into it than before while Flash Frost is more "impressive" on some level and is maybe more engaging on a repeated listen so it has earned my vote.

Apostle's Maraud
King Noah
Preserved Valkyria

Maraud is sweet, has some really fun rhythms, and I really love the part going on at 1:11. One of those things I dunno how to explain why I love that part but I do (though the sub-sub section at 1:16 part of it less so). Don'tWorry , is a song that has some cool techno sounds but rhythms just feel really plain by comparison. Also singing I don't care for makes the decision even easier. I feel like some parts of this song feel like it could be missing something too.

I don't like the counting man in Colress. King Noah has a cool funny buzz going on right at the start. I think I'm not in a mood for in depth write ups right now I guess oh well. Both of these songs are pretty neat but I don't want to listen to counting man. King Noah has some cool variety. But also feels a bit...repetitive? shrug

sound volt extreme piano. Starry Heavens has some cool instrumentation, if it didn't have The Singing the match might be close for me. Probably isn't the kind of song that would do too well with just removing vocals though. the Valkyrie would probably still win unless Starry Heavens had something added this hypothetical's getting silly

Waterworks Area
SEISMIQ
Dead Neon Hell City

Gosh first match today is Brutal. I'd take either of these songs over the other four and spoil alert for my write ups but I like all 4 of the other songs (I'm deciding this one last). Both make use of a digital atmosphere that I enjoy, Scourge is more of a "grand battle" with a more full experience, but Waterworks is more of an active, "mysterious environment" which I kind of prefer to "grand." Bits cancel out and balance my feelings on both making this a tricky decision! Ultimately I think I kinda prefer the Waterworks, the slower parts of Scourge before the loop aren't as appealing to me, but really I'm most likely gonna be voting for whichever loses here in the wildcard thingy, and I think it'll have a decent shot at getting it.

2nd match, Tron i trust is a pretty nice song, for a song with vocals. Do prefer Seismiq though. And I'm not giving up on my ranking topic sorry it's taking a while don't worry I've just had stuff to deal with !!

toc is a good match today, good stuff, maybe my favorite 2 songs to have shown up in toc so far (but there's only been 8 also it might actually be 1 & 3)

Scars of FAUNA

Fax Factory is a fun weird song ! My kind of thing. ID is not really my kind of thing so this is an easy match for me. Though Faxtory it's the kind of weird that I can imagine is not very popular so I'm expecting the loss here oh no but a prepared oh no

2nd match is quite a bit harder. Imbrium is also a weird song and I like weird! But it is not quite my kind of weird as much as the Fax but there's still plenty of variety and interest to enjoy here, with the little hotel ring for service bells on either side, the grinding bursts of bass, the drums that are more active than the slow, dark, thoughtful feel of the other sounds may agree with. But, BUT, the girls. the vocals, they are an ever present sound that I don't care for, a main spotlight that disagrees with me! In comparison, Scars of FAUNA is all around solid, above average. But I kind of feel like there's little about it I can really "point out" as to why I enjoy, other than simply being an actively neat song. (Well that undescribable sample that goes on right from the start and more is cool. good I'm talking about the percussive lens sound (like I said it's indescribable)) uuuuuuuhhh what I'm saying is I guess I kind of prefer Scars of Fauna but it feels more of a SAFE song where as Imbrium is more DARING and INTERESTING it makes me want to vote for it in one way, but the GIRLS bring it down for me too much and Faunascars stands tall enough on it's own to Overcome

dont feel like dealing with those toc's today

Invitation Flower ~ Autumn

Brain Power is like, it's interesting for a song with vocals for me, but for an "electric power" type of song it feels pretty plain & weak. Meanwhile Rude Buster is like a top tier song for me so tbh Brain Power didn't really stand much of a chance of getting my vote this time.

the Crysta Kaliedo is a real nice synthy sort of relaxing yet active atmosphere, but I don't care for the singing as usual, gotta dock big points for that. the Love You song isn't relaxing but it also has some real great synth activity, especially the part that picks up at :15, love that part. Of note I originally supported this piece because of how much I loved that part, but later the part that's like, "fake vocal replacement" starting at :44 started to bug me so I was planned to switch my support one night but wanted to wait for the morning for an arbitrary reason, and then that night support started to actually pick up and it got in and I regret nothing. Really I do still really enjoy this song despite that bugging bit.

really don't feel like doing write ups for everything this time but I'll comment on 2nd match here, I'm voting for vocals already wow. Zelda title is slow NES that doesn't even loop that well so it just basically barely comes out to "okay" for me. The dark mechanical way Last Pandemic starts is much more interesting & more my style, however the singing from about 1:00 - 1:25 goes so against what I want so much that it's -almost- enough for me to switch to the Zeld. But the stronger parts of it ultimately prevail over "okay"
don't feel like voting toc today

I too was going to be a procrastinator for submitting a song oops

Anyway as for volunteer stuff I offered to help with the alternate system for deciding the last tier of songs getting into the contest and I still intend to do so if it is to be accepted. Though maybe this wasn't listed in the volunteer post because it wasn't a role you were specifically looking for and was more something unique I thought up.

Also for what it's worth I could also maybe sometimes help out with vote counting again like I did last year

I feel like Banana Blitz isn't too great; the originals Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2 on the Gamecube are the best & where the series really flourished if you ask me. Or maybe go for the Xbox version of Super Monkey Ball Deluxe, since that's basically both of them + some extra content; I think the Xbox version of that is good, I know the PS2 one has some pretty poor control issues.

hmm, some thoughts I have on this thing, is that if all the second chancers are grouped together, the number of them that will retire is set & guaranteed. If they simply faced the normal bracket it could make their wins feel more "earned," that giving them a second chance really was the right call.

However, I guess it does feel awkward that the path to retirement would technically be arbitrarily different for 4 of the songs in each bracket, as they'd need to face a song that people decided looks strong in the current voteset, but also lost a match. Whether that difference ultimately matters, or the thing I noted at earlier in this post, or anything else brought up about this is a question I don't know the answer to. I guess in a way I talked myself into accepting either way

I'm talking about the part of the last contest where during the nominations phase, the group of songs with 4 supports from 3 users had a random selection of which songs were getting in, and I'm proposing that instead of being random we go with a system that looks for songs from that tier from those with the fewest in, so there's less chances of feeling totally screwed over by RNG at that part, and more potential for variety from smaller viewpoints.

I mentioned this last topic but I still think that there should be a system for picking which songs get in the contest from the last nomination tier, based on the disadvantaged nominators & supporters instead of pure random selection.
I still haven't really finalized thinking about -exactly- what that system should be (feel free to suggest something if you think you have a better idea) but I was sort of thinking like going in order:
  • Any songs with a supporter with no other supported songs in
  • Any songs with a nominator with no other nominated songs in
  • Any songs with a supporter with 1 or 2 other supported songs in
  • Any songs with a nominator with only one other nominated song in
  • And then from here, taking the total number of supports in from everyone supporting the songs (if doubles are involved, those users' support counts are counted twice), going in order from the lowest up
Something like that, hopefully that's explained alright. It makes sense to me and I'll be totally willing to do the work for this system if it can be used.
