Case 4-2 - Turnabout Corner

All righty, friends and neighbors.

One of the things thats throwing me for a loop is profiles arent available to show people that I talk to. It would be super to show important people to people instead of being like HMMM I have evidence thats only specifically relevant to Mr Eldoon, Mr Stickler, Wocky, Trucy, Det. Skye and Plum Kitaki. So I cant talk about anyone I dont have evidence for, and Im doing things like making footprints but that creates no tangible evidence in my Court Record. This case also has a meandering map where I can only get to certain places through Wright Anything Agency or Kitaki Mansion? So, I have not been having an easy time of it.

Im kinda stuck, Ive been wandering around presenting all my evidence to everyone, even Trucy [who offers to make the piece of evidence disappear]. I worked with Det. Skye on a print-making kit she bought online. We were mildly concerned that it wasnt police issue, but we forged ahead. Theres some smooth footprint with a leaf stuck to the sole thats a mysterious footprint. Ive made prints of all the others which pointed to the presence of Wocky and Mr Stickler.

It would be more helpful if I could wave a profile of Meraktis at Eldoon or ask around about that mystery footprint.

Phoenix was pretty tight-lipped when we asked about Prosecutor Gavins role in stripping Phoenixs attorney badge 7 years ago. Maybe I forged evidence, maybe I didnt. Anyway, it doesnt matter now. Can I get this guy a Snickers?! Its getting to the point where I am almost ready to say why didnt you make another character, its SO obvious that you wanted to abandon everything from the prior trilogy.

I like new things, but gimme a foothold. This is a rough climb.

See you tomorrow!

Case 4-2 - Turnabout Corner

Investigating now - we find that Mr Eldoon was a surgeon as well as a rival of Dr Meraktis. This rivalry drove him to eventually embrace his noodle calling. We visited the Detention Center and Wocky Kitaki was not there, but Mr Stickler was. He insisted that since he had seen Trucys show, he wanted to learn the secrets of her panties, and how so many things could come out of hammerspace from them.

I have since learned that if I do not play and write every day, I start actively avoiding this game. I am somewhat concerned that its going to take its sweet time explaining what happened in the last seven years to fill in the weird gap between defense lawyer!Phoenix and unshaven pianist!Phoenix.

Look forward to daily updates. I appreciate that you guys are regularly reading and discussing in the thread, and for the encouragement.

Case 4-2 - Turnabout Corner

Characters Ive met:
Mr Hat, a rigged mannequin stored under Trucys hat
Wesley Stickler, a student

We meet with Trucy in the defense lobby.

Sadly, she wasnt kidnapped or actually in any real danger. I was seriously disappointed by this. Instead, theres a rig in her hat that can become a separate being known as Mr Hat. :| We handwave this with the Judge once we return to the courtroom, and continue our cross-examination.

Mr Stickler tells us some weird testimonies that we then have to pick through, but we do discover Apollos unique Perceive function, which allows him to zero in on peculiar nervous motions made by witnesses to point out contradictions!

We find that not only was Mr Stickler standing across from where he previously testified, but he is in all likelihood the panty snatcher!

I dont know if I can take much more of this. We do need more investigation, so here we go again! See you soon!

Case 4-2 - Turnabout Corner

Characters Ive met:
Klavier Gavin, prosecutor and international rock star, same face as brother Kristoph Gavin

Our day in Court has arrived - no real prep made aside from all that running around we did the day before, and little more than a variety of odds and ends in the Court Record to show for it.

First, we talk to Wocky, who has it all wacky, honestly. He keeps insisting that he should do time in the pen, which makes Apollo sweat and Klavier smirk. We finally get him off the stand, only to replace him with some bookish weirdo named Wesley Stickler. This guy is very prim and proper but ultimately milquetoast, we break up some of the contradictions in his testimony and then, suddenly, without warning, Trucy is being held hostage in the courtroom! The perp demands a 20 minute recess, immediately! The Judge agrees! The criminal kidnapper disappeared nearly as soon as he arrived. I am super excited to be rid of Trucy. Go kidnapper, go!

See you tomorrow with more!

Case 4-2 - Turnabout Corner

Characters Ive met:
Wocky Kitaki, the Kitaki bosss son
Winfred Big Wins Kitaki, the Kitaki crime familys boss

I ended up talking to Phoenix Wright, and he pointed me towards the location of aluminum fingerprinting dust in Wright Anything Agency [formerly known as Wright Law & Co., formerly known as Wright Talent Agency]. I show this to Det. Ema Skye and she is filled with fond memories and is reminded of her passion for scientific forensic investigation. We use it on a knife/shiv that we find in People Park near the recreated crime scene involving Mr Eldoons noodle cart. The weapons prints match Wocky Kitaki, so we figure we should circle back to the Detention Center and offer our services.

When we arrive, however, Wocky and his dad are having it out - Wocky wants to serve hard time to prove his street cred because hes such a gangster...Winfred Big Wins Kitaki is having none of his kid getting locked up. He tells us to take good care of Wocky. Big Wins is wearing a cute kitchen apron and has the face of Marlon Brando circa Godfather era. Lets just hope we dont screw this up - we dont want him saying, Look how they massacred my boy.

We are all squared away for the trial tomorrow - except we havent had a chance to talk to the defendant! Oh well. Time will tell.

Case 4-2 - Turnabout Corner
Characters Ive met:
Alita Tiala, fiancee of Wocky Kitaki, the Kitaki bosss son
Wocky Kitaki [photo, not met], fiance of Alita Tiala
??? Gavin, a dude who looks like Kristoph Gavin reinterpreted as a host club employee

Idk, I found Trucys panties and I figured out the car that hit Phoenix Wright is parked at the Meraktis Clinic next to Mr Eldoons shabby shack. Apparently the clinic does a lot of work for shady folks connected with the Kitaki crime family - theyre currently being investigated by the police.

I found Mr Eldoons noodle cart in the People Park across from the Kitaki mansion, but Det. Ema Skye wont let me near it for the time being.

Lots of characters are new, which is normal for Ace Attorney, but they seem a little try-hard this time around. Characters like Maya and Pearl were heartwarming and thoroughly enjoyable. These days I find myself rolling my eyes. Well see!

Detective Skye, Ema Skye from Rise from the Ashes but older and no, her fashion sense has not improved in that time

Hoo boy do I hate this game. Its like a goofy kids game that spent 90 days in a warehouse with the original trilogy, not long enough to start to resemble the actual trilogy, just long enough to think it belongs there.

Case 4-1 - Turnabout Trump

Kristoph had used a SECRET TUNNEL! The cupboard in the room covers it, when Olga was out cold and Phoenix had gone upstairs, he moved the cupboard and cracked Mr Smith over the head, killing him. We were able to pin it on him by getting a blood-spattered ace of spades card from a little magical girl in the lobby who Phoenix claims is his daughter.

That was a fake card, but it got us a real reaction from Kristoph Gavin, clinching the win and a Not Guilty for Phoenix. Apollo is obviously out of luck working for Gavins law office, as he watches his boss being led away in cuffs. Apollo immediately starts investigating his chances of working for Wright.

I do like the gameplay of this case, where things go 3D and you are able to move furniture, etc. to see what really happened. It was a lot richer than most #-1 learner/refresher cases.

There was a weird part at the end where Phoenix corrects Apollo, who says Phoenix claimed the locket was his. He says something like, I never said it was mine. I said it was a locket with my daughters photo inside. Which is true. Get OUT of here! What happened to Phoenix 7 years ago? In that time, he lost his attorney badge and gained a daughter with a CLAMP style wardrobe? How is his attitude closer to that of MvK rather than the lovable defense lawyer I just left back in 3-5??

I have scads more questions than answers. See you tomorrow for 4-2!

Case 4-1 - Turnabout Trump

We are funky and I hereby welcome you to funky town.

Olga Orly is not in fact a shrinking violet, but a professional card dealer and she was working with Shadi Smith to frame Phoenix Wright for cheating. They snuck a card on him but when it came time to investigate, the card was gone. Apparently Phoenix slipped it into a nearby grape juice bottle. [Wonder if this was originally wine but we had to change it??]

Phoenix pins the whole thing on Kristoph Gavin, saying he had dined with him prior to the poker game, and called him directly following the incident, meaning he was aware of the situation and therefore the fourth person in the room.

Idk, this smells weird to me. We shall see what occurs tomorrow in court. See you then!

Case 4-1 - Turnabout Trump

Characters Ive met:
Kristoph Gavin, star defense attorney
Apollo Justice, novice defense attorney and liability magnet
Phoenix Wright???, pianist, poker pro, and hobo who forgot to shave
Shadi Smith, victim
Winston Payne, prosecutor who now has long hair and I hate it
Olga Orly, waitress and poker dealer at the Borscht Bowl Club

Phoenix has apparently been playing poker professionally at the Borscht Bowl Club for the past 7 years and he hasnt lost once. One night, he plays Shadi Smith, and the man ends up bonked over the head by a grape juice bottle, Phoenixs upside-down fingerprints are all over the bottle, and he refuses to testify regarding the murder.

Olga Orly appears to be a shrinking violet of a witness who brings a bowl of borscht [this place is going to the dogs - remember when a cup of coffee was cause for Judges comments?] and a bunch of unhelpful lies to the stand.

This starts off as your typical learners case, Kristoph bringing the Court Record to your notice and asking you if you need a refresher course on cross-examining, then giving you half of one even if you answer no.

I am cool with Apollo, but theres nothing really endearing about him? I dont particularly care about him [and its entirely possible that Kristoph being super attractive is the reason]. Seeing Phoenix be a weird hobo who discusses the case with a certain evasive charm while he unironically wears a retina-searing PaPa knit hat was the part Im still recovering from.

Discussion question: A number of you said Godot was your favorite character. Why is that?

Well see how the case progresses tomorrow. See you then!

Case 3-5 - Bridge to the Turnabout

It has been a wild three months, friends and neighbors.

Yeah, I definitely mainlined this entire courtroom case because I couldnt drag it out for a couple more days. Once I started, it wasnt stopping. train horn

We apparently slung Misty Feys dead body over the chasm using one of the suspension cables from the currently burning bridge. This yeeting was the flying body that was mysteriously present in Laurice Deauxnim/Larry Butzs drawing of the burning bridge. We have been grilling Iris, or so we thought, until we realize it is actually Dahlia Hawthorne on the stand!!

Dahlia had this all planned out with Morgan in jail, thus the plans that Pearl was blindly trying to follow through on. Turns out Misty Fey channeled her before Pearl could, and got killed for it. As Dahlia suspects this was Mayas doing, she writes Mayas name in blood on the white lantern. At this point, were pretty sure that Maya is despairing about the loss of her mother, Dahlia capitalizes on this by telling us Maya threw herself into Eagle River.

Except, coming from the Inner Temple side, theres a large rocky bank, so instead of a splash, shed have made a splat. Maya writes a note and channels Mia, asking what she should do - she then manages to channel Dahlia. In the courtroom, Pearl is channeling Mia, who lets Dahlia really have it before Dahlia is forced to leave Mayas body and return to the hell of eternally being herself. Maya collapses, and after a brief recess, she comes to and is forced to testify.

Despite being exhausted and emotionally wrung dry, Maya also seems to be hiding something from us as she testifies - its pretty obvious to Phoenix that shes trying to protect someone. We push further and can tell that Mayas trying to protect Godot. One of the coolest moments in the case happens here, when Maya accidentally lets it slip that she saw red lights in the pitch black of that fateful night. We dig into the way the area was cleaned up - that weird rectangular shape of snow removed, but Maya written in blood remained as well as the Kurain Master charm, we realize that the person who cleaned it up likely cant see red.

Apparently, Godot, formerly known as Diego Armando, overheard the dastardly plot between Morgan and Dahlia, opened the now-burnt letter received by Pearl, and coordinated with Misty Fey in order to save Maya and [hopefully] Pearl. He admits that it all could have gone far more haywire than it did, and that he only did it to somehow atone for failing to protect Mia. As Diego, he had been poisoned by Dahlia Hawthorne, lost all color in his hair and most of his eyesight. He spent the next 5 years in a coma, during which time Mia was killed. This also explains Godots unforgiving attitude toward Phoenix Wright - he was eager to blame anyone but himself for what had happened, since he was convinced he could have protected her if he hadnt been poisoned.

A bloodied dagger from the incident in the garden is determined not to be the victims blood, since Godot hasnt had a chance to change clothes and his clothes are intact, we suspect the injury that night was covered by his mask. He cries blood, and we get our Not Guilty for Iris.

https://i.imgur.com/08KEJR0.jpg
[In other news, Larry's art is excellent and I am slightly jealous.]

Turns out there was a little treat stashed in the Kurain Master charm, which the Master must wear as long as she is alive - a little photo of young Mia repairing the Ami Fey vase while Maya sobs uncontrollably. Comforting to know that even though Pearl was so worried about breaking the vase, it had been done before, and almost certainly will be again.

https://i.imgur.com/WszIRth.jpg?1

Final Impressions:
A great time was had, there certainly were some cases which werent that great, but as they say - its 100 Floors of Frights, theyre not all gonna be winners.

Lots of memorable characters, and some that I became surprisingly attached to - Maya probably wasnt a big deal to me throughout most of this, but if we lost her during that last case, I would have been inconsolable. I truly was expecting Angel Starr in 1-5 Rise from the Ashes to be a bigger deal. There was something so suspicious yet innocuous about the Cough-Up Queen turning to selling bento lunches, plus the heterochromia [apparently colored contacts according to the devs].

Plenty of times, if you spent enough time digging around in the Court Record, youd know the information you needed to know before you were tested on it in the courtroom. This saved me a lot of time when witnesses would give faulty testimony, and I wouldnt have to throw everything at them systematically to see what would stick. I learned when to save [early and often] and started to think more accurately in-universe, following the tropes and details to their next logical conclusion. The only times I was very frustrated was when I was learning something new [Psyche Locks were a disaster the first time I tried them] or when I clearly didnt get the logic the storyline was going for.

Any other takes you wanna know, just ask! Im very glad I took the time to play this trilogy. Any recommendations on my next Ace Attorney game, aside from AAI? Let me know.

Favorite characters, in order:
  1. Dick Gumshoe - an overall friendly guy, pal!
  2. Miles Edgeworth - relatable content
  3. Mia Fey - admiration level: extreme
Least favorite characters, in order:
  1. Trilo Quist - super annoying
  2. Winston Payne - terrible, grating voice
  3. Ron DeLite - milquetoast in almost every possible way??

Overall Case Rankings:

Idk guys, when I go into something, I don't expect or require all loose ends to be tied up by the end. It's nice when they are, but ultimately unnecessary for me as long as there's character development for me to enjoy. It's certainly more interesting that Elise is Misty, but I was open to anything.

Case 3-5 - Bridge to the Turnabout

We go a-wanderin to find out even more information today. Iris has Psyche Locks, Pearly has Psyche Locks, Gumshoe has a metal detector, and Edgeworth is still beating himself up over his earthquake DL-6 related trauma.

Talking with Sister Bikini reveals that the matter of Master of the Kurain Channeling Technique is a highly competitive process, usually but not always going to the eldest daughter of the main family. The remaining sisters form their own branch families, but theres usually tension for obvious reasons. In this case, Morgan Fey was the eldest daughter, but Misty Feys overwhelming power and skill at the Technique conferred on her the Master title. Morgan was always bitter about it - unbeknownst to us, Pearly is not an only child. Morgan had twin daughters, Iris and Dahlia, before her.

Morgan did not become the Master, and with Mistys shame and disappearance following DL-6, the marriage fell apart. When Morgans husband left, he took the twins with him. Iris was given up to Hazakura Temple to be raised, and Dahlia was raised as his own with a new wife and then step-sister Valerie.

We speak to Edgeworth, who has informed us that for her crimes, Dahlia was sentenced to death and executed last month. He thinks this removes Dahlia from the equation - but we know better. After all, the whole point of the Kurain Channeling Technique is to summon those from beyond the grave. We must poke around and see whodunit! Apparently Edgeworth took Gumshoe out for pasta, and we mildly chastise him for this - due to those salary cuts, the man eats enough noodles as it is.

Gumshoes in the courtyard, singing to himself [to the Victor Kudo theme from 3-3 Recipe for Turnabout, no less]. We talk to him and he lets us take a spin with his metal detector, as hes trying to find the actual murder weapon [the ceremonial sword aint it]. We find a sword embedded inside Mystic Elise/Mistys cane, and Gumshoe wants to get it tested by forensics. We urge him to hold off, depending on what is found, it could mean trouble for Maya. He gives us a half burned letter that was found in the incinerator near the Inner Temple. Gumshoe is just a dopey ray of sunshine in every single case. I dont know what it is - that beaming smile, the silly jokes, the personal anecdotes, the unflagging dedication [persistence over efficiency, but hey]. Gumshoes eyes sparkle as he describes the great pasta restaurant he went to with Edgeworth and offers to take me and Maya there when this is all over. I just love him, but get the man a raise, please.

Breaking Iriss Psyche Locks reveals that Bikini saw her at the Inner Temple, which means she was in two places at once because there were two of her. We present her with Dahlia, and despite her weak protests, we insist that someone channeled Dahlia that night! Iris indeed stayed by the Hazakura Temple, while Dahlia was at the Inner Temple. Iris didnt want to get in her way, since she botched helping with the fake kidnapping all those years ago, leading to consequences for Dahlia. They didnt do it for the money, Iris insists they did it to get revenge on their father.

We scoot on over to Heavenly Hall, where Larry insists misfits and losers gather. Hes cooking potatoes for himself and Pearl to eat. We finally break through Pearlys Psyche Locks, finding that the burned letter was from Morgan herself, instructing Pearl to channel Dahlia and let her do the rest. The gravy-slimed scroll is evidence that Pearly was doing her best despite not completely understanding what the letter asked of her - it said to gravely roast the scroll, and although she went over how to read the phrase with Elise/Misty, she hadnt learned the meaning of the phrase.

Tomorrow, were in court! Fun fact, the date span of this case includes my birthday.

See you then!

Case 3-5 - Bridge to the Turnabout

Just kidding, we didnt save Pearl [or me!] any trauma. We run into Franziska and Gumshoe, Franziska has to accompany me over to the Inner Temple once the bridge gets repaired.

Gumshoe has repaired the bridge and we hurry over there. Pearl is safe and sound, we send her back over the bridge while we investigate. Theres a single trick lock on the door, Godot is there slinging insults and telling me hes seen death and I should know what I did etc. etc. HERE TO KILL ANOTHER FEY, HUH?! And were all stunned by both his statements and his hurried exit.

Someone else was slinging gravy, because its gooped all over the Misty Fey scroll. Maya is supposedly still in the cavern, but we cant get to it because of the trick lock. It looks just like a Psyche Lock. WEIRD.

We investigate the Garden at Gumshoes behest and we find a small red Kurain charm, which matches a cord around Elises neck. Maya is written in Elises blood on a lamp post, along with a spatter of blood near it, and a precise rectangular shape around the lamp is free of snow. This is getting curiouser and curiouser. Were informed that only Iris can open the trick lock inside, so Edgeworth is bringing her from Detention. We return to Hazakura Temple, where we aim to question Sister Bikini.

Sister Bikinis 5 Psyche Locks come all undone as we present both the red Kurain charm and the gravy-slathered scroll to her. She explains that Elise Deauxnims true identity is that of Misty Fey, Master of the Kurain Channeling Technique. I am super depressed. I had no idea. Mayas mom was RIGHT THERE, and now shes gone. Im just stunned. Yall werent kidding about the intense gravity of this case.

Then, to make matters worse, an earthquake happens. We rush to the Main Gate, where we find a dazed Edgeworth and no Iris. Edgeworth bemoans his weakness, having blacked out as soon as the earthquake started rumbling. He proposes a manhunt to cover the mountain and put out an APB for Iris. We know better - she has to be in the Inner Temple.

We arrive at the Inner Temple, but instead of a single trick lock, there are now five. Iris says she cant open them, Edgeworth is feeling groggy, Sister Bikini told us before we crossed over that she suspects the Cavern could have collapsed in on itself. Franziska offers to stay with Iris and figure out the locks, she orders Edgeworth to go and rest.

Well have to see whats on our plates tomorrow. This was heavy! See you then!

Case 3-5 - Bridge to the Turnabout

Phoenix is poking around and talking to everyone he can find, while still suffering a headache and clearly recovering from his injuries. Were investigating and reviewing the info that was covered in the courtroom yesterday, while still searching for even more info.

Sister Bikini has 5 Psyche Locks, but I figured we should poke around a bit more first. Maya is still stuck over in the Inner Temple, and if anyone is over there with her, they are trapped as well. Pearly is still missing, too, which makes me quite troubled. Wouldnt it be humorous if we found her and she had been channeling Mia this whole time? That would certainly save her most of the trauma.

Anyway, didnt get too far today but plan to do more tomorrow. See you then!

Ode to Franziska, as always.

Sister Bikinis utterly confusing testimony, including a slow understanding that snowmobile engines are warm after being used and therefore melt snow, was painful enough. We then entertain several rounds of testimony with Larry Butz/Laurice Deauxnim. He obviously lies about why he was out at Heavenly Hall, what he was doing there, etc. We cut through a lot of that and manage to get some of the real story.

Larry waited to meet with Iris at Heavenly Hall, but kept walking out to the foot of Dusky Bridge just in case she lost her way. She didnt come at 10:00PM as agreed upon, so Larry elected to take a brief nap. He was roused by a brilliant flash of lightning.

This bolt of lightning, of course, sets the Dusky Bridge on fire, and Larrys artistic spirit is overtaken. He must sketch this burning bridge - and he does in a most colorful fashion, including a flying body of Iris. Larry insists that Iris flew over the bridge since he saw her nun hood. As we know, she was not wearing her hood as she gave it to Phoenix. Larry still insists this is what he witnessed, but no one in the courtroom is convinced. Im somewhat impressed by Larrys persistence here - hes totally undeterred by the variety of Edgeworth/von Karma insults being flung his way. He may be stupid, but he thinks he knows what he saw. Now its up to the rest of us to figure out the deets.

Prior to the murder of Elise Deauxnim, the crystal amethyst sphere on her staff had fallen off near the foot of Dusky Bridge. Larry found it there, half in the snow. This, along with the snowless condition of Elises body, is leading us to believe that is the true place of the murder, not, as previously thought, Hazakura Temples courtyard. The infamous snowmobile is suspected to have been used to transport the body quickly from the location of the incident to the aforementioned courtyard.

The judge reaches the conclusion that more investigation is needed to answer existing questions, so he sets a new court date and sends us off to dig for clues as best we can.

See you tomorrow!

Larry, describing the flash of lightning, reminded me so much of this guy:

Case 3-5 - Bridge to the Turnabout

Courtroom time! Franziska von Karma has shown up as the prosecution for this case - guess Godot wasnt interested after he heard Miles was taking over for Phoenix. We also have a very Canadian judge, eh? Whats that aboot?

Mr Edgeworth immediately begins to grill Sister Bikini on the events that night - her testimony is full of weird contradictions, timeline problems, and other issues [but traumatic memory is like that, right folks?]. Having been through the Court Record a few times, I was able to point them out easily. So now its just a matter of dealing with SSSSSSIBLING RIVALRY. Franziska is pretty sure shes going to get a perfect case here, and Miles is dead set on helping her understand that perfection just isnt a thing, much less a thing to strive for. He has really grown since his travel abroad, huh?

We find that the Shichishito [7-branched sword] cannot have been the murder weapon Sister Bikini claims it was, buried up to the hilt in Mystic Elises body. Bikini admits she did not see the moment that Elise was stabbed, only that she saw Iris remove the sword from Elises body smoothly. As stabbing anyone up to the hilt with the Shichishito is near impossible for anyone, much less Iris, and the 7 branches would cause a problem for any smooth removal, Edgeworth stands against these statements. The sword itself is only bloodied nearest the tip anyway, not all the way up the blades as testified.

The game does make an important point here - deep puncture wounds such as those made by swords, daggers, arrows, stakes, railroad spikes, a chopstick, or even your ballpoint pen bleed the most after the item is removed. For some reason, entertainment over the years has been a big fan of quick item removal in a puncture wound situation and that is quite possibly the worst thing you could do unless under medical supervision. Even anime Durarara!! had a character wisely comment to themselves I better take this out later, once I get some superglue after being stabbed in the hand with a pen. Immediate removal is death. Be extremely cautious of doing so IRL.

The image of Sister Bikini on those little stack of milk crates is still making me laugh. Well continue with her bizarre testimony tomorrow.

See you then!

Case 3-5 - Bridge to the Turnabout

Oooh, as Gumshoe is so fond of pointing out during this investigation, the plot thickens!

Its true, it was very easy to break the 2nd Psycholock, because I had seen characters like Phoenix/Maya/Pearl often enough in Profiles to grow blind to their presence. Sister Iris definitely didnt want Phoenix to find out her secret.

We hunt down Laurice Deauxnim/Larry Butz in his heavenly hovel down at Heavenly Hall, a sad little shack off to the side near the suspension bridge. Its covered in garish party decor and illustrations of Larry himself and Sister Iris. Its just a bizarre sight to behold. Gumshoe, bless him, is terrible at hiding and watching Larry from afar. He cant resist the urge to stand up, point at Larry, and bellow Objection! I really wish they had recorded that one line in Gumshoes voice, just for me.

A combination of our detailed investigating and Edgeworths literal steely gaze makes Larry spill the beans. This was one of the easiest Psyche Lock sessions, I was able to finish it all in one go. He wasnt at Hazakura Temple, instead he was at Heavenly Hall, and he had written the weird blackmail letter we found earlier that was threatening Sister Iris. Larrys one-sided vision of romance has struck again - the secret he referred to was clearly the secret love affair that hadnt yet happened between himself and Sister Iris. If I could roll my eyes any further back in my head, you could call me the Undertaker.

We start to question Larry a bit further, and 5 Psycholocks appear! Miles comes to the conclusion that if we want more out of him, well just have to drag him to the witness stand. End scene.

Should be an interesting time with the prosecution in court.

Well continue with the case tomorrow!

Case 3-5 - Bridge to the Turnabout

At the end of Turnabout Goodbyes 1-4, youre clearly supposed to show Maya the DL-6 bullet evidence that helped us win the case. She snagged it from the evidence room, and you want to remind her that shes important, even if she doesnt feel like it. Ever since I screwed up by showing Maya a photo of Misty Fey that was in the Court Record, its been a running gag.

There was a scroll of Misty Fey over at the Inner Temple across the now-burnt-out bridge. So this time around, its Hey, you know what might make you feel better? Training in the bitter cold in this weird building that has a portrait of your missing-and-likely-dead-mom!

We continue playing as Edgeworth, poking around every corner of this place, leaving no stone or snowflake unturned.

I love the interaction between Edgeworth and Gumshoe here - its hinted at in a variety of different cases, but here I get to see it in action. Gumshoe talks way too much, shares anecdotes that are tangentially relevant at best, and spends the rest of the time just beaming. I guess since smiles are free, hes indulging. We get more clues about how all this salary-slashing has affected our intrepid detective. Gumshoe, seeing candles on the altar inside the temple, shares that he likes candlelight and near the end of each month, he likes to light a few and relax at night. Miles cuts through this farce, asking if our dear detective can pay his electricity bill.

Im presenting everything under the sun in the Court Record to Gumshoe, trying to glean relevant or entertaining insights. I give him the Magatama - and HE BITES IT. He thought it was CANDY. Gumshoe is hungry, and Im deceased. XD

Some disagreement persists between Sisters Iris and Bikinis version of last nights events. Bikini insists Iris was at the Inner Temple supervising Mystic Mayas training, Iris says she was so frightened that she didnt even leave her room.

We find a blackmail letter addressed to Iris, and we use it to break the first of 2 Psycholocks, as Miles calls them. For some reason, Iris doesnt want someone finding out whatever dark secret it happens to be - but either its no one currently in my Court Record, or I havent discussed something with someone somewhere first in order to get stuff unlocked.

We resume our investigations tomorrow! See you then!

Case 3-5 - Bridge to the Turnabout

Characters Ive met:
Sister Bikini
Sister Iris
Elise Deauxnim
Laurice Deauxnim/Larry Butz

Pearl has signed Maya up for a super special awesome spiritual training course in the mountains in February, right around that same suspicious suspension bridge where the events of the last case took place. Pearl gets to meet Elise Deauxnim, her favorite picture book author, there. We meet two nuns named Bikini and Iris - and Iris looks suspiciously like Dahlia Hawthorne with a different hair color and an accommodating, kind personality.

Larry Butz is on the scene and is learning the art of picture books from his new mentor, Elise Deauxnim - hes taken on the funky alias Laurice Deauxnim to show his devotion to his new life. After two seconds talking to him about this new life, his obsession with Sister Iris reveals that the Butz isnt so different after all.

I like the way that this particular case let you warm up to the idea - the beginning cutscene does show you that someone dies, but the story itself takes a little while to get going. Sometimes I feel like were thrown in before we even care who were dealing with - this isnt the case here.

Maya goes across the bridge to the training place, and through many errors, is abandoned there and the suspension bridge is burnt out. Elise Deauxnim has been killed, Pearl is missing, and our eyewitness is Sister Bikini. Phoenix tried to run across the bridge to be with Maya and got hospitalized for his troubles. Larry Butz calls the only person he can count on to help in this time of need - Miles Edgeworth.

We then continue by playing as Mr Edgeworth in a fun turn of events, complete with inner monologuing [Edgeworth does seem to keep more to himself than Phoenix often blurts out]. Gumshoe is overjoyed, and lets be real - so am I to finally see the guy smile! Gumshoes sprite just keeps grinning - he tells you hes tired and hungry all the time, he has to deal with salary cuts, etc. But the important thing is that Mr Edgeworth is here and thats just the best part of the day.

Mr Edgeworth does have a bit of catching up to do - he receives the Magatama from Phoenix at the hospital, and misremembers the items it reveals as Psycholocks. I dont know why I found this so funny, but I did. Probably because Miles is typically so exacting in his details. Phoenix probably mumbled and it didnt sound like our dear blue suit was in good shape in the first place, after that fall.

Edgeworth hasnt heard of Godot - I seem to recall some throwaway line about Godot being specifically recommended by Edgeworth. So thats curious. You have to talk to a number of people to try to get the truth of the matter - we also collect a variety of compliments on how nice we look and how were a handsome boy.

We reluctantly agree to stand on the other side of the courtroom and be Sister Iriss defense.

More to come tomorrow as we continue to investigate!

3-4 overall was fun aside from my own bad day at the outset. Playing as Mia is always exciting, and I was able to figure out a fair amount of this on my own without bashing my head against the wall. It's fascinating to see Mia deal with an unstable defendant, a dopey judge, a smug and flirty senior coworker, a BABYPROSECUTOR, an earnest baby detective, a deceptive femme fatale, all during her first case and trying to be as confident as possible in what she's learned and trying to hone her existing skills.

I am very interested to learn more about the Diego Armando and Godot connection, if we get to know more. I have to say, I was waiting the entire time for Mr Armando to just be like "I'm going to take my coffee and ask Miss Foster a few questions during the recess" so I could yell "BUT YOU'RE GONNA DIE" at the 3DS.

Interesting to note that Mr Fawles was probably one of the most unstable seeming defendants we've had so far. Maximillion Galactica might have cried off his false eyelashes, Ron DeLite didn't want our help, there was the twist with Matt Engarde, but at least none of them tried to chew on a 20lb iron ball and alternated moments of calm with unnerving screaming.

3-4 was short and sweet. I would rank it higher than most of the intro cases, but I think its overall significance is yet to be seen.

Case 3-4 - Turnabout Beginnings

Characters Ive met:
DAHLIA HAWTHORNE CONFIRMED
Blonde beard judge was part of Luke Atmeys trial-next-door, yes.

Entertaining typo of the day:
Neighboorhood

All righty. The scarf is not white. Melissa Foster is Dahlia Hawthorne confirmed. She tripped up by saying the scarf was white, which she would have only known had she been privy to the info in the note left behind by Valerie Hawthorne, as visibility was low during the actual event.

We learn that 5 years ago, Dahlia was kidnapped by her tutor, Mr Fawles, and after a diamond valued at 2 million USD was exchanged for her safe return, she fell from the bridge along with the diamond in her backpack. Neither her body, nor the diamond, was ever recovered.

Present day, uncovered through Mias clever cross examination, we use the timer on Dahlias camera to poorly stage a meeting between Mr Fawles and Valerie Hawthorne.

Unfortunately, theres a 30 minute time gap in which Mr Fawles visits a local shrine to recover Dahlias deadly bottle necklace - giving Dahlia plenty of time to silence her own sister.

Mr Fawles testimony is full of holes and obvious lies, hes just trying to do a last-ditch effort to cover for his beloved Dahlia. In a shocking turn of events, he drinks the contents of the necklace and straight up dies on the stand. Like, bleeding from the mouth, slumps where he stands. Mia is understandably taken aback. Mr Armando crushes his coffee cup with a single bare hand, making himself bleed. You know, because we needed more blood.

Barring any other weird courtroom flashbacks, its comforting to know that the next time I see Miles Edgeworth, he will not be aping any weird Von Karma mannerisms the way he did constantly when he was 20.

Speaking of young, I checked everyones ages on the Court Record. Troubling doesnt even begin to cover it.

Currently, Dahlia Hawthorne is 19. Defendant Mr Fawles is now 25. That means that 5 years ago, when Dahlia was 14, Mr Fawles was 20. And it is stated they were in a relationship together. Victim Valerie Hawthorne was in on the kidnapping plot, and the three participants wanted to split the diamonds worth of 2 million USD between them.

The ending makes this case something of a bridge to what I can only assume is even more drama in 3-5.

See you tomorrow!

Case 3-4 - Turnabout Beginnings

Characters Ive met:
Mia Fey [flashback case!]
Miles Edgeworth [flashback case, hes 20 years old, a baby! and in full Von Karma regalia, to boot!]
Terry Fawles [defendant]
Diego Armando [hmmm, this coffee guy looks familiar]
Valerie Hawthorne [deceased]
Dick Gumshoe [flashback case]
Blonde Beard Judge [a different judge!]
Melissa Foster >___> [Dahlia Hawthorne]

Although I do try my best, I am terrible at thinking like other people. I cant find stuff at the grocery store if it doesnt make sense to me, I have trouble understanding why people are upset about certain things, I get offended sometimes when people dont respond the way I would in a given situation. I still wish lip balm would be by lipstick, because it all goes on your lips. Not lip balm in between cough drops and painkillers or vitamins, in a seemingly random aisle of the pharmacy. That all being said, Ace Attorney is normally a good game franchise for me. It gets me to think a little differently, try to connect dots made by someone else. When it gets me immeasurably angry though, is that the game is structured for one flow of thought and one flow only.

I must have clicked on dearly departed Valerie Hawthornes Crime Photo of her stuffed in a trunk 27 times before finally looking it up to see what the game wanted. It was not difficult - in wet/rainy/soggy/foggy/muddy conditions, the victim was pushed forward and stabbed in the back. This means that the front of her jacket would be wet and/or muddy. In the photo, I was seeing a bone-dry car, on bone-dry ground, with no condensation on any of the plexiglass [rear window or tail lights], a victim with dry hair missing an as-yet-unmentioned hat as shown in the Witness Photo. I was like HELLO?!?! THIS PHOTO IS CONTRADICTION PERSONIFIED. But apparently clicking on the front of her coat was what we wanted. I had to look it up.

The other thing? The scarf is clearly documented, by Valerie herself, to be white. This may come up later but I am VERY DONE today. In the Court Record, Idk if anyone wants to fight me on this, but that is a blue scarf. I dont know if we just got creative with our presentation of the COLOR WHITE, but that is not a white scarf. It is a blue scarf. Might become relevant later.

I dont understand why I can balance cases with a jillion pieces of evidence, but I cant handle the very beginning of a case where I have two photos, a post-it note, the last will and testament of the victims great-great-grandmother, a hair pin, and the defendants unspent nickel.

We will be returning to this case. If what I know about Dahlia Hawthorne is still true, then this aint gonna end well and Im not sure why we decided to revisit this in a prequel. Painful.

[read in a cheerful voice:] See you tomorrow!

Case 3-3 - Recipe for Turnabout

Don Tigre tries to intimidate us for everything hes worth, talking tough and disrespectful to every person present in the courtroom. He keeps trying to hurry the proceedings, saying hell have to take more and more expensive travel back to his office because hell be late for a meeting, etc. He says hell be forwarding the bill to us, but Im not worried. I wanna get this guy in the slammer.

He keeps lying to us, and you cant press on the wrong parts of his testimony, in the interest of speeding things up. For some reason the you couldnt see the back of the victims head concept was difficult for me - I think I just assumed Don Tigre stepped into the restaurant briefly, but the game actually wanted you to believe he literally opened the front door to Tres Bien, just stood there, and lied about what he saw. So that was the only part where I looked up a guide to direct me, because I was pressing and presenting evidence on the wrong statement. I got distracted by the fact that I wasnt getting penalized and got excited, I guess.

Thankfully, GUMSHOE, YOU WONDERFUL MAN bursts through the door with the ear medicine bottle, now with verified fingerprints.

I proceed to lie to Don Tigre, who was not there earlier, telling him that we found the poison in this container. He falls for our obvious entrapment, correcting me by describing the real bottle containing the potassium cyanide. Ah, its good to be the defense team.

Maggey gets cleared and we finally get to give her that second, giant lunch of cocktail weenies and plain white rice that Gumshoe had lovingly made for her and given us...yesterday? The day before? In any event, its literally stone cold. Gumshoe has booked it right out of there because he figures aside from a quick congratulations to Maggey on being a law-abiding citizen, that ship has sailed. So Maggey appreciatively cries while she eats her room-temperature weenies and rice. Despite her vitriolic protest the other day in the detention center, she really does like weenies, and she is feeling nicer now that she knows Gumshoe was trying to do Things For Her. Freedom is certainly better than the alternative.

We continue with Case 3-4 - Turnabout Beginnings tomorrow!

Case 3-3 - Recipe for Turnabout

We go to the trial and thoroughly question Chef Armstrong, he makes up some lies including one about putting a mirror in the middle of the dining room, but we see through that pretty easily. Phoenix easily figures out that its a phony victim, meant to have Victor Kubo as a witness and throw him off the scent of the real crime!

We grill the Chef a little further and find that he hid the original body of Glen Elg in the kitchen, thus the non-aromatherapy bottle that we had given to Gumshoe to get analyzed by the lab. That bottle does, in fact, contain the ear medicine that Mr Elg needed. However, the lab didnt have enough time to analyze the prints.

Chef Armstrong is terrified of revealing the real culprit/person who is putting pressure on them to do all these things. We wave the loan paperwork in his face and bring up the fact that hes $500k in the hole. This leads us to believe that Don Tigre is the only person who could ask the Chef to be party to these dark dealings. The Chef doesnt really have a choice.

Don Tigre will have to be summoned to court, and before the Judge sets a new court date, Godot promises to have Furio Tigre in the courtroom after a mere 30 minutes recess. The Judge reluctantly calls the recess and says we will reconvene after.

Gumshoes feeling a little jumpy, saying he cant just stand around and do nothing. I think thats adorable. We give him the ear medicine bottle and ask him to get that down to the lab for further analysis on the prints. It will take a full hour, but hopefully he can return just in time for us to need it. I have to say, that BURST INTO THE COURTROOM WITH NEW STUFF function was helpful and exciting last time.

The trial continues tomorrow. See you then!

Case 3-3 - Recipe for Turnabout

So we round out our investigation by unlocking all these Psyche Locks. Turns out Viola hit Furio on his scooter back in the day, and he paid for the damages and Violas million dollar medical bill in order to get in good with her grandfather, Bruto Cadaverini. Furio is using Viola, and her persisting while being aware of this is kinda painful.

We talk to Lisa Basil, Glen Elgs boss and find that he marked on the calendar that he was going to meet Tiger aka Furio Tigre on the day he was killed. Glen was very behind in his debts and needed to make lots of money fast. Don Tigre also needs to make money fast, because he probably pulled a bunch of shady deals to pay for Violas medical bill in the first place. Glen clearly orchestrated the MC Bomber virus that Tigre sent running through the computer systems over at police HQ, which has thrown the entire precinct into a panic.

Upon further discussion with Victor Kudo, whose nose is still suffering from a horrific case of rosacea, he left the scene for at least a full 5 minutes at Chef Armstrongs request because he had no cell phone and needed to find a pay phone to call the police. This means that with Glen Elg dead, Victor Kudo out looking for a phone, and Maggey Byrde unconscious, Chef Armstrong was left to his own devices with no witnesses for an amount of time, and no one can vouch for what he did during that time.

I would like to state for the record I also dont have a problem with Maggey, as a person or as a character - I just dont think shes a realistic match for Gumshoe. It seems like hed have to do all the heavy lifting emotionally, on top of whatever cheerful optimism hes using to keep his own head above water, and thats just not cool.

Now that weve learned more, its trial time tomorrow!

Case 3-3 - Recipe for Turnabout

Characters Ive met:
Lisa Basil
Viola Cadaverini
Furio Tigre

We investigate the various places and people involved with the case, and it begins to bloom like an onion. Its clear that well have to fry a little longer before we get to enjoy the benefits of our labors.

Psyche Locks, Psyche Locks galore! 3 here, 4 there, one even on our dear Gumshoe! Although his PL was more about not wanting to discuss his lottery loss than anything else. I havent unlocked the rest, but I did do a lot of running around.

Cadaverini? For real? I am part Sicilian, so this gets a little weird. >_> Its the cultural stereotype case! Wooo~

Anyway, we are reminded that the Tender Lender has Chef Armstrong over a barrel for $500,000. The creepy lady who we saw briefly earlier [like a half second, dont think I mentioned it before] turns out to be Viola Cadaverini, granddaughter of Bruto Cadaverini. Gumshoe says the Cadaverinis have all of Japanifornia right in the palm of their creepy, dead hands. Theyve got too much money, he says, and they have a ton of goings-on wrapped up in the black market.

Viola works for the Tender Lender, headed by boss, er, Don Tigre. Furio Tigre. He has a horrible Crayola red-orange skin tone to match with his red-orange outfit. He keeps a blue suit with a paper attorneys badge for when hes milking his spiky hair by pretending to be Phoenix Wright.

Furio calls her Violetta, and according to Viola, theyre lovers. You already saw Viola over at Tres Bien, threatening to slice up Chef Armstrong and commit arson, arguably to collect on the place.

Don Tigres Tender Lender office is ...interestingly decorated, including a giant gold shogi Gold General [] piece, a daruma with both eyes filled in [Japanese custom is to fill in one eye at the setting of a goal, and fill in the other eye at the goals glorious completion], a variety of weird outfits hanging on pegs, a big boom box with the CD player open to reveal none other than a mix album by - MC Bomber! The MC being discussed by Don Tigre and Glen Elg before the latters death!

We also visit Glen Elgs not-so-promising sounding former workplace, Blue Screens, Inc. We meet his former boss, Lisa Basil [Im finally catching on to the weird palindrome name thing we got going on]. Shes oddly welcoming about us searching through Glens old desk, but tightlipped about Glens troubles. Ill have to unlock a few PLs tomorrow to get through to her.

The investigation so far has been peppered with pop culture references from the late 90s to mid 2000s, such as Lisa Basil looking like a ghost in a shell, some password scheme being referred to as SPARDA - Maya calls it madness and she is quickly reminded that This Is SPARDA.

We will keep the investigative good times rollin tomorrow! See you then!

Case 3-3 - Recipe for Turnabout

Beginning of the trial, we have our typical rundown from Gumshoe. I dont know why my brain wasnt engaged today, I had to look up what the issue was with his testimony. Apparently, nothing missing from the crime scene was incorrect as the victims prescription bag was empty with no prescription inside. And we could just call up the doctor and verify? Doesnt sound very HIPAA compliant.

The rest of the time we spend on a sad little episode of Victor Kudo [was this supposed to be a Victor Hugo reference?] being an old man and forgetting details. Our job is to mercilessly rake his inaccuracies over the coals and get Godot looking more like an 80s-era smoking train car than a prosecutor.

Judge encourages us to go forth and find more details and then well reconvene for more courtroom fun times.

I think the game seems to try a little too hard to create drama/push Gumshoe and Maggey together. Although Gumshoe is a little off sometimes, he is an overall nice guy who tries to do his best. Hes clearly not in great circumstances due to his impassioned speech about US LOW EARNERS GOTTA STICK TOGETHER once he sees that Maya is filling in as a waitress at Tres Bien. Hes promised to show her the best way to make instant noodles. Hes consistently cheerful, even though its clear his beat is not the most upbeat thing ever.

Maggey, despite I suppose the many, many things that have gone wrong in her life, constantly bemoans her unlucky fate. Nothing ever seems to be her fault. To be fair, the scenes so far that weve seen her in - shes legitimately innocent. But in my experience, people whose main topic of conversation is themselves and how much it sucks to be them - arent that enjoyable to be around even during the good times. Shed be a tolerable character if she focused on not-herself for more than three seconds. She expresses brief gratitude when you do something for her and thats about it.

Im definitely cool with characters who arent Happy Joy Here Comes the Positivity Train - see my enjoyment of Edgeworth. Theres just something about Maggey that really rubs me the wrong way.

More investigation tomorrow! See you then!

Case 3-3 - Recipe for Turnabout

Characters Ive met:
Chef Jean Armstrong
Old man/Victor Kudo
Phoenix Wright
Glen Elg [deceased victim]

This was a weird case opening. Apparently I, or Phoenix Wright, got Maggey Byrde charged as guilty. A certain Glen Elg, programmer and lucky winner of $500,000 via the lottery, was unlucky enough to drink poisoned coffee and die in Tres Bien, its hideous French restaurant theme achieving peak pink/blush/lace/floral. Who gave the girly grandma a can of Monster and an unlimited thrift store budget?

You find that the decor culprit isnt a girly grandma at all, but a fabulous chef, Jean Armstrong. I was half expecting pink sparkles like Armstrong from FMA. Hes comically French, and his irises are big enough to be unnerving. I wanted to question him further, but the Magatama was missing, so we had to otherwise occupy ourselves.

Maya ends up working at Tres Bien for the day and has to wear a maid outfit somewhat reminiscent of a dreamsicle - for some reason the main color is orange and there is white ruffles and lace as far as the eye can see.

Victor Kudo, formerly known as the old man, is a bizarre Japanese stereotype who hangs out behind Tres Bien, aggressively pelts the pigeons with seeds. Im sure the pigeons are getting some mixed signals. He yells and is generally unhelpful until we bring Maya, in full maid regalia, to try and ply him for information. Victor wasnt very interested until we summoned Mia in Mayas place. Then he spilled his guts about Jean OuiOui Baptiste HonHon Magnifique Armstrong.

We have a newspaper and mysterious vial from Tres Bien analyzed by our trusty Detective Gumshoe. The handwriting on the paper matches with Glen Elg. We also find that not only is the food at Tres Bien awful, but the owner is a petty thief and his restaurant is not exactly in the pink, its deep in the red. We find our beloved Magatama in his equally tacky looking kitchen. He keeps everything clean and seems to make regular clean sweeps - stealing hats, gloves, scarves, and other small items from his customers.

Godot swings by Tres Bien to bestow his opinion on their coffee - its just as terrible as the rest of the place. He tells us hes looking forward to tomorrows case...And so am I!

See you then!

Case 3-2 - The Stolen Turnabout

Ron talks about how he was fired for stealing info, he didnt tell Dessie because he didnt want to lose her. Instead, he turned to a life of fabulous, fabulous crime to keep up with her spending habits.

Ron admits to wearing the MaskDeMasque outfit and how it presented some challenges wearing a cape while trying to work with the safe/stuff the body inside. The mask itself helped disperse the impact of the killers strike on Rons forehead. We talk about how Ron must have been unconscious during the whole buzzer/no guard coming fiasco, otherwise he wouldnt have taken so long to stow Mr Bullards body in the safe. The buzzer would have given it a sense of urgency.

Thanks for that always-timely, beyond-the-grave encouragement, Mia! We yank Luke Atmey out of his MaskDeMasque trial next door to come testify in our trial.

We destroy Atmeys alibi by proving to the court that he took his security camera photo at another time during the prior two weeks, and he moved the Ami Fey statue to do it. I genuinely thought there was going to be something more about paint getting on the cape and thats why we had to tear the cape off, but thats just me overthinking things.

DeMasques calling card reveals the problem - Atmey has seen the urn, but he only saw it after it was repaired by Adrian Andrews, so he thought it was supposed to be pink speckled. Quite a look, but not quite the one that generations of the Fey family had in mind.

Godot presses us to find a motive for Atmey to kill Mr Bullard of KB Security. We find that Mr Bullard was blackmailing Luke Atmey, not Ron DeLite. We have double jeopardy issues, so we have to push forth if we want to hold Mr Atmey accountable. Mia appears through Maya and insists that we be allowed to cross-examine Mr Atmey for his recent statements.

This leads us to an annoying game of only press on the right statement, you only get ONE CHANCE. Well, I didnt wait long enough - Phoenix usually changes what he says or other people react differently when youre right in this game. So I ended up pressing on all 11 statements and hating myself. I didnt wait long enough for Phoenixs retort to Godot ... since all the reactions appeared to be the same.

Anyway, after getting extremely frustrated and seeking out a guide, I pressed on the correct statement - Atmey knew information he shouldnt have known, since he was in the other courtroom at the time of Rons testimony.

Despite an ending process that made me quite possibly the angriest Ive ever been playing this franchise, it was a good case.

Next is 3-3! See you tomorrow!

Case 3-2 - The Stolen Turnabout

Characters Ive met:
Kane Bullard [deceased]

Nice that you get to just chill and talk to Dessie. Not gonna lie, their relationship sounds a lot like Nice and Jacuzzi from Baccano! - minus the crime on one side and adding in a whole lot of spendthrift tendencies.

Then you go check out KB Security, not the most upstanding of institutions it seems. Kane Bullard is done, he died at 1:00AM... right around the same time as the rest of the hullabaloo in multiple locations. We find he did press his emergency buzzer when he was attacked, but part-time security guard and full-time idiot Larry Butz wasnt there to hear his cry of distress.

Larrys lack of subtlety extends to his Psyche-Locks, fortunately for us. We break through them relatively easily, while he gives us his best surprised Pikachu impression.

Adrian Andrews did spiff up our Sacred Urn quite a bit by breaking it a second time, then putting it back together the right way, and polishing it to a rich shine, pink paint splotches and all.

Ron has apparently been stealing things as MaskDeMasque to keep up with Dessies uncontrollable retail therapy, but he has been following detailed heist plans from someone else. Someone knocked out Ron the night of the murder, and when he found Kanes dead body, he decided that putting it in the safe would be the best thing. Maybe Larry isnt the only one with two estranged brain cells desperately calling for a reunion. The only thing that makes it worse, is that Ron is on a short list of people who even know how to open that safe. :| Son, I am disappoint.

First thing I would have done in a basement warehouse if I was holding precious treasures and priceless artifacts for an exhibit is clear all the paint cans out of there. Unless the Main Exhibition Hall is formerly a Sherwin-Williams, theres no reason for there to be that many paint cans hanging around here, there, and everywhere.

Back to the courtroom tomorrow, Ill see yall then!

Case 3-2 - The Stolen Turnabout

Characters Ive met:
Godot

Even the mightiest of redwoods start off as mere saplings. -Godot
Dude, we only have 3 days for this case. -Me

We meet Godot, he has never lost a case...or won one. Oh, Ace Attorney. You are just the best.

Typo adventures in this franchise continue, pretty sure this is the first one thats a piece of evidence - DeMasques BROACH. We should be careful, this is a sensitive subject. We need to broach it carefully. Merriam Webster is saying it can be spelled either way, but it looks wrong. :| Plus broach includes the verb meaning, while brooch points only to a pin/clasp. The specific function of this brooch is to fasten a cape - history ties this to some of the oldest known brooches or cloak pins, known as penannular brooches.

You should know how much I enjoyed hearing Phoenix repeatedly referred to as Mr Trite by Gobo, er Godot.
https://i.imgur.com/ho5jMxk.jpg
Pictured: Gobo, ready to project.

Godot is obsessed with coffee, throws a cup at Phoenix at some point in the proceedings, and gets a free pass from the Judge even though no ones supposed to have food or drink in the courtroom. This lax attitude... but its always been weird in this courtroom, so its business as usual.

Godots Objection is very loud and deep! Its like it taught all the other little Objections everything they know. Tom is giving me sidelong glances and saying 'Husbando tiem'. Maybe I deserve it.

Atmey admits himself to be MaskDeMasque, but Ron isnt ready to give it up. We prove that he cant be MaskDeMasque, as his ID/wallet were found at KB Security during that same window of time. The Judge declares Ron Not Guilty, and we all go out to the lobby to celebrate, give hugs, sing kumbaya or whatever it is that we do post-confetti.

Our joy is short-lived. Godot comes out to inform us that the CEO of KB Security, Kane Bullard, has been found murdered in his office. You already proved that Ron was there at the time, with blackmail being his M.O., making the hapless young man the primary suspect. So its time to go around again.

See you tomorrow!

Case 3-2 - The Stolen Turnabout

Characters Ive met:
Larry Butz
Godot [mentioned in conversation]

The Lordly Tailor gag never gets old. When I was a child, I used to call its IRL counterpart, Lord & Taylor, the scribble store. My parents informed me that it was very expensive, and my retort: How could it be expensive? Their logo is illegible! Theyve changed their logo three times since then - point made.
https://i.imgur.com/zEa037u.png

Weve received Rons lost wallet and an ominous blackmail letter. Not sure what it all means, or who is the secret identity of MaskDeMasque. Dessie isnt convinced that its Ron, and based on the gaping holes in Atmeys retelling of events, Im not sure either.

Larry Butz shows up, and sure enough, if something smells They had some creeper dialogue in this localization. From what I understand, creepy lines about Pearl had been removed from prior games [so-called Dr Hotti comes to mind?]. I was a little surprised to see it here, but Larry is weird.

I wasted a bit of time trying to present evidence and profiles to Adrian Andrews but according to Phoenixs lines, she was too far gone to be of any help.

Luke Atmey talks about the cases prosecutor being the mysterious Godot - pretty sure I know who this is from general memery, but Ill have to experience it for myself. Also, apparently Edgeworth is travelling overseas again and said Godot in his absence was the finest in the country. I appreciate Mayas loyalty to Edgeworth though. Its cute.

Any instance of Pearl crying is awful. Her sprite is just so sad! Why did we let her go off and hunt for evidence by herself anyway? I guess she zoomed off too quickly and we didnt have a choice.

We will be heading on to the first day of the trial tomorrow. See you then!

Case 3-2 - The Stolen Turnabout

Characters Ive met:
-Luke Atmey
-Ron DeLite
-Desiree Dessie DeLite

Well, well, well how the turntables...
Never thought Id have to see Pearlys botched craft project ever again, but the Sacred Urn has been stolen. Everyone is so shocked, but Im pretty sure it no longer contains the soul of beloved Kurain Channeling Technique originator, Ami Fey. Which means its just a weird, glued-together vase that reads I AM in bold lettering on the front. But if we can hoodwink people into coming to see it, then so much the better.

It was part of a large collection of treasures on display, Adrian Andrews was organizing the whole thing, nice to see her again.

Luke Atmey has to be one of the franchises most obvious puns. I couldnt even use Examine until after he left because he would give me a hard time for being so crude. I like to think Phoenix would have been more crude if he wasnt trying to maintain a good rep as an attorney.

Ron is such an old guy name for a kid who looks barely 19. How did he score a wife as exciting and good-looking as Dessie? Give us your secrets, dude!

Heartbreaking to be reminded that Pearly no longer has any family available to her but her cousin, Mystic Maya. ;~; I guess dudes feel left out in Kurain Village, so lots of the relationships fall apart. Im just glad the remainder of her formative years arent going to be spent with Morgan. *shudder*

I have to say, it was really awkward to talk to Maya about her mom Misty - I still felt a twinge of guilt for showing her that pic of Misty at the end of 1-4. Hey, heres a pic of your missing-likely-dead mom. :| Even if anyone else lets me off the hook, Ill never forgive myself for that blunder.

One progression that I have noticed is that Gumshoe, unless already in a bad mood, is no longer feeling inferior when I show him my attorneys badge. He smiles and says that a real man has a police badge. I keep showing it to him every case, its become something of a tradition when there isnt much else in the Court Record.

There may be more poking around and talking to people before the first days case, so Ill see you tomorrow!

Now to start Trials and Tribulations! No trivia today, hope that's cool.

Case 3-1 - Turnabout Memories
https://i.imgur.com/hz6FrzF.jpg
We go back in time to play as Mia Fey in one of her first cases, a college students murder. Doug Swallow got electrocuted, a young lovestruck Phoenix Wright is the defendant, his girlfriend Dahlia Hawthorne used to date the deceased, and the whole situation just smells fishier and fishier as it marches on.

Mias boyfriend, also a lawyer, had been poisoned 8 months prior in a mysterious incident while interviewing Dahlia Hawthorne, a beautiful, cultured college student. Also 8 months prior, Dahlia had broken up with her own boyfriend at the time, Doug. Thats around the same time she and Phoenix started going out.

There were quite a few twists and turns, but we break Phoenixs heart, we reveal Dahlia as the poisoner and current murderer, and tell Phoenix he really needs to have some self esteem and work on those critical thinking skills.

Culprit: Dahlia Hawthorne

Overall: This was easily my favorite opening case of the games Ive played so far. The chance to play as Mia, the flashbacks, and seeing everyone younger all came together to elevate this case for me. Might be the times we live in, but Phoenixs sprite constantly sneezing, coughing, and accidentally covering his eyes with his face mask made me feel a little more uncomfortable than it otherwise would have. The giant heart P sweater is iconic, as is the poisoners vial necklace.
https://i.imgur.com/fxwm6GO.jpg
Dahlia Hawthornes character design kept reminding me of Danielle Bregoli, the cash me outside girl from Dr Phil. She definitely had a privileged southern belle vibe, and I was just waiting for it to turn scary. Whenever pretty girls enter this courtroom, we have to have several rounds of slack-jawed Saturday morning femme fatale reactions - Gollyyyyyy~!

This case seemed to have a bit less hand holding than your average first case. Mr Grossberg, although constantly bringing up his hemorrhoids in conversation, appeared to let Mia do the thing and stood by occasionally for support. I didnt feel like my intelligence was in question as I had in past opening cases. Maybe thats the confidence that comes with playing a couple of these games already? Maybe its the fact that youre playing as Mia? Even as a rookie, Mia comes across as generally more confident and capable than early Phoenix.

From now on, Ill be posting as I go instead of making you all wait on big writeups. Youll get more of my impressions as I play, and more consistent posting to this thread. Its a win-win.

2-4 felt over the top to me. Like, kidnapping Maya and making it a condition for completing the trial felt a bit too jumping-the-shark for me. Thankfully T&T managed to be better without resorting to quite that variety of shenanigans, even if we did have a "Maya" case in the mix.

This was part of the reason I was duped into thinking 2-4 would be relatively short. I was so wrong, but I enjoyed the wild ride.

T&T is next!

Case 2-4 - Farewell, My Turnabout
https://i.imgur.com/PTHOC7E.png
Rival actors destroy each others lives and those they come in contact with - who is surprised?

Maya gets kidnapped by a mysterious figure De Killer.

Juan Corridas manager/fiance Celeste Inpax had gone out with his rival, Matt Engarde. This got turned around on Juan and he broke off his engagement with Celeste. Celeste is lost to suicide and then her mentee, Adrian Andrews, also attempts but survives. Adrian Andrews becomes Matt Engardes new manager and starts a personal relationship with Juan Corrida.

Juan Corrida is strangled to death and then post-mortem stabbed with a knife featuring Matt Engardes fingerprints. The two men have been surveilling each other for the last couple years.

Adrian has some entanglements, Matt Engarde tries to cover his tracks, everything is unbelievably complicated. We destroy the trust relationship between the assassin De Killer, get Maya back, and pin De Killer on Matt Engarde. It doesnt bode well for Monsieur Engarde.

Culprit: Matt Engarde by proxy of De Killers assassination.

Overall: This one was long and arduous, but I really enjoyed it. It has even overtaken 2-2.

Things unrelated to the guitar case are related to whats in the guitar case. This was the worst part of the case for me, and I dont know why. I just had a mental block because I was taking it super literally.

At the very end, you must select Who would you like to show What? I had a couple embarrassing rounds at the very end where I introduced the bellboy uniform to itself, and the same with the pistol. For some reason, the game didnt flip you over to Profiles after the initial question. At least I gave Miles Edgeworth the whip to return to Franziska probably because I didnt have a photo of Gregory Edgeworth in the Court Record. Yikes.

JFA Final Case Ranking, best to worst: 2-4, 2-2, 2-3, 2-1.

Trivia:
  • Reports of lions coughing or sneezing, creating mortal danger for the head in lions mouth circus trick date back at least to the 17th century.

Case 2-3 - Turnabout Big Top
https://i.imgur.com/SfBZKGk.jpg
The ringleaders dead, and Maximillion Galactica is the culprit!

The ringleaders daughter is 16, and two guys much older than her want to marry her!

The ringleader was not the original target!

Terrible jokes abound!

Say it aint so!

Russell Berry, ringleader of the Berry Big Circus, has been killed by blunt force trauma to the head, and he died out in the snow, all alone. No footprints were found around his body, and although many are accusing Max Galactica, theres no evidence to suggest Russell even saw his killer.

An injured member of the Berry Big Circus, Acro, had been kept on out of the goodness of Russell Berrys heart. Acros brother, Bat, had died in a freak lion accident. The stunt had been prepared before, but Russells daughter, Regina, had put a bit of pepper on Bats neckerchief to get him back for a prior pepper-sneezing prank. Unfortunately, instead of Bat, the lion sneezed as Bats head was in its mouth, and he died.

Acro never forgave Regina for this, even though Regina herself is more than a little clueless as to her hand in the whole thing. Franziska would basically be disowned if she didnt mess with evidence a LITTLE, so of course she tries to help Acro destroy some evidence. Acro had lowered a bust of Max Galactica from his 3rd floor window that night, intending to kill Regina Berry.

However, the giant heavy bust of Max Galactica cannot be hidden, and our dear heroes find it hidden - under Acros wheelchair blanket and between the acrobats legs.

Culprit: Acro. Quite possibly the most chill killer, because he didnt snuff his intended target.

Overall: Lions, creepers, and clowns, oh my. I didnt get satisfying damage animations from the killer, there were a lot of weird misdirections. There was plenty of running around here, and I did get to talk to Gumshoe somewhat frequently. They presented almost the whole crew to you, only to say JUST KIDDING its this guy over here that we introduced at the very end. I definitely thought it was going to be something involving blunt trauma from the ventriloquist dummy.

Max Galactica has a pretty fabulous character design - I did enjoy finding out that he is from a rural area, and has spent pretty much his entire career wanting to make it big and be somebody.

Please, AA, dont ever have sprites where birds land peacefully on the killer. Its just extremely creepy in hindsight.

All in all, I liked this better than 2-1, but not as well as 2-2.
