The US didn't know that McArthur would want to exonerate the emperor after the war as part of his occupation plan, since they hadn't planned that out yet. The emperor didn't know he wouldn't be held responsible for anything so the demand for their conditional surrender the US received specifically mentioned that point. Neither side knew what was happening? they told us they would fight to the end and made us fight through a buzzsaw when we landed at their doorstep. Theres no room for interpretation there. Japan would have accepted unconditional surrender earlier had they known that it would largely resemble the conditions they wanted. And the US would have accepted a surrender keeping the emperor in place had they known their occupation plan would involve absolving him and many other government officials of guilt. They can say that after the fact but the reality facing our troops was a bloody and drawn out invasion, theres no room for interpretation when Japan says theyre going to "fight to the bitter end". Many people argue they shouldn't have to pay reparations for things they themselves didn't do, but many of those same people often are happy to say civilians dying in a war deserved it because of something other people did. If I had to pick between the lives of our troops or Japanese civilians then Im throwing those civilians under the bus 100 times out of 100.
