I like the normal ending just fine, really. The post-Cascade stuff is spotty, but the originally released ending video I thought was a pretty good ending to the series. The epilogues were truly miserable though, and I did not want to experience anything following them, so I have not looked into Homestuck 2.

From the price I assume this isn't the same exact model as the previous games...or is this just how these games were priced when they were released episodically?

I know that Ciconia is supposed to be 4 episodes rather than 8. I'm not sure about the pricing. Ciconia was made available globally around the same time. You couldn't buy Umineko on Steam until way after it had been released in full. New episodes were released at Comiket one at a time, but I don't know how they were priced.

Ciconia has some pretty cool bits to it but it doesn't grab me as hard as Umineko did. But for sure it's good enough to keep buying future chapters. I really don't know where it will go from here.

A more specific comparison between the two below...
When it comes to Umineko Episode 1, everything once they get into Kinzo's study to the end of episode 1 is fantastic. I love love love everything about those scenes. From that point on Umineko really had its hooks in me. Ciconia's tension ramps up, but it really takes until the Christmas party to produce the same effect, and that's right before the end of the episode. Which is why I felt like I was left hanging somewhat more.

Danganronpa is a murder mystery and to the extent that there's blood and gore it's still fairly cartoonish. Maybe if you're really sensitive it might still be too much, but I think it's on the level of cop dramas and whatever.

Zero Escape and Umineko are probably worse. Certainly Higurashi is.

The OP is a little confusing because I don't see how 'Ocarina of Time' as a descriptor necessarily corresponds to being the best. There seems to be an implication of being approachable as well as high quality. I think Umineko is easily the best VN of any I have read, but it's not super approachable. Steins;Gate might be a good choice for what you're saying though.

I have some fondness for I/O. The thing is that it actually is the closest to Neuromancer as just about anything I've read. Because Neuromancer is nonsense in an interesting way too. That's the origin of cyberpunk. I can respect that.
