Logically already killing them because its a fucking lead pipe and B. Theyre already choking and dying from exposure. Its lazy writing to move the plot forward.

And no, there is nothing deep about the ending. You can hand wave a hack if you would like but what is at the surface is all there is to it. Revenge bad. Very bad perhaps. Its not a grandiose statement of Catharsis. Ellie threw away everything she had and it took nearly killing Abby to realize that. How you think that ending is cathartic is absolutely hilarious to me. Shes thrown her entire life away from what youre shown.

Imagine missing the ending by such a mark that you don't realize that the Ellie in the end literally got what she wanted. The entire game is based on Ellie trying to get closure with Joel even though they never explicitly say it to you. You think the entire game is about cold hard revenge because that is what they present to you, ignoring the layers of context that the game slowly reveals to you and then slaps you in the face with in its ending.

Literally the whole point of its ending is that Ellie sacrificed everything to get the closure with Joel that she was robbed and she got it in the end. This is why Abby is spared. This is why they even show the last conversation Ellie had with Joel at the very end. I can't imagine not thinking the ending was intentionally framed with this in mind. Did you think that last scene was just a random conversation they wanted to show you? It's a direct connection to everything that's happened and its to show you why Ellie went to such great lengths to hunt Abby only to let her go in the end and that Ellie ended up getting that closure.

Im well aware of what they were going for, and what they were going for is Revenge BAD

She got what she wanted BuT aT WhAt CoSt was the entire point. Its been done a thousand times over and you trying to make it sound deeper than it really is doesnt undo that.

The games plot is indefensible trash. Its lazily handled and sloppily told. There are multiple scenes that directly contradict one another, only one side character has any development at all, and while theres nothing wrong with Joel dying, youd have to ignore literally everything we know about Joel up to this point to think both he and Tommy would immediately trust Abby and follow her to camp. They just could not come up with any motivations for Ellie herself outside of pissing on her character by just boiling her down to revenge fodder.

And holy shit at thinking the ending is positive. Literally the whole point of that ending was she lost everything chasing revenge because, as we all know, revenge bad.

Nora does not tell Ellie where to find Abby, nor does she even have a chance to because she is dying of spore exposure as Ellie bashes her brains in with a lead pipe, yet in the very next scene Ellie is plot delivered from the hospital back to the theatre and tells Dina she got Nora to talk and told her to go to the aquarium. The game had not one but TWO pregnancy plots that feel like they just didnt know how to write a female character to empathize with.

Only two side characters (the seraphite twins) are actually worth talking about and had some level of character development while everyone else, including Ellies love interest Dina, is just pure fodder.

The very piss poor attempt to get you to care about random npcs programmed to kill you on sight by having other npcs sadly cry out their name when they die does the opposite of that because of how genuinely annoying it is with how often it happens.

While in universe Joel had it coming, there is no way in hell both he and Tommy would so easily trust Abby and find themselves in the situation that leads to his death. It just feels like they didnt know what to do to give Ellie any motivation to do anything so a generic revenge plot had to be done.

Gameplay is mostly fun, the set pieces are the same ND quality, soundtrack is stellar, and all performances are well acted. Shame about the rest.

6.5/10 this game shouldnt exist, or at least not like this.

I see the fan reviews and figure it's being review bombed to an extent. But I see the critic review and there's no way they can genuinely think it's one of the best rated games ever. So it's definitely playing to a narrative on both sides.

its definitely getting review bombed. Despite how piss poor the narrative is theres no world where this game is a 3 with everything else it has going for it.

On the flip side it sure as hell isnt a 9 or 10/10

I have the original remastered version free from ps+ that I have been thinking about playing, with all the hubbub from the leaks I decided to wait and see what actual people thought of it.

This has kinda killed my interest in it tbh.

Frankly this will probably be $20-$30 fairly soon, and I think its a good value at the $20 range. I kind of regret buying it full price though if Im being real with you
