Thank You for Smoking
Rating: 98/100

One of my all-time favorites, Thank You for Smoking finds a strange amount of heart in a heartless, cruel industry by turning a jaded cynicism into a witty insight. Aaron Eckhart knocks it out of the park alongside a deep bench of heavy hitters including career performances from Dave Koechner, Rob Lowe, and many more. The deconstruction of the advertising industry is of course propaganda, but it's the right kind of propaganda, smart and enjoyable. The sugar that helps the medicine go down.

Hilarious. Easily in the top two or three mockumentaries ever made, WWDitS is an amazing mix of awkward workplace humor and standard horror fare, that, when combined, creates The Office of the supernatural world. Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement just knocked it out of the park here, bringing all of the charm of Flight of the Conchords - awkward social interactions and all - to a genre that, on paper, shouldn't work.

Rating: 81/100

Bleak, cold and hopeless, Blade Runner's only real flaw is a chunk of the middle film that drags on a little too long for its own good. But the thematic focus on the nature of artificial life is extremely thought-provoking, and Harrison Ford really feels suited to carry the entire piece on his shoulders. The final scenes, focused around Roy Batty, are absolutely beautiful and depressing in equal measure.

The first Spider-Man remains anchored in an optimistic, early-21st century representation of Marvel's greatest icon, and the entire affair is perfectly poised to introduce any wide-eyed child to the power of a true superhero. I point to this movie as the introduction of superheroes to modern cinema. Between one of the greatest scores in superhero music (provided by Danny Elfman), a riveting, insane performance brought by Dafoe, and one of my favorite special effects sequences capping the movie, Spider-Man is the culmination of all of the superhero movies before it, and the precedent set for all to come after.

Finally, a comic book movie that has fully embraced the best part of comic books - the shared universe. Instead of flirting with the idea of interconnected individuals drawn together in a culture of capes and cowls, Infinity War feels like the first film to dive headfirst into a universe where repercussions in one plotline can spread across everything. The only downside of IW, quite honestly, is the clear lack of personality that the Avengers B-squad has. Scarlet Witch, Falcon and Bucky just feel so lightweight and uninteresting alongside much more interesting personalities scattered throughout the film. The biggest highlight? Two Sherlock Holmes arguing with each other inside of a UFO.

Rating: 93/100

A collage of tiny, less remarkable tropes in romantic comedies that, when combined, weave into a web of normal lives like a tapestry of human life. Precious for their combined complexity, each strand of Love, Actually contributes to a greater whole. With one of the best casts you've ever seen, there is so much charm to Love, Actually, and it doesn't shy away from provide a mix of happy and unhappy endings to its various tinier narratives. Naturally, no one exhibits more awkward British charm than Colin Firth and Hugh Grant, but there's something to like in every aspect of the film, as it embraces the sappy, heart-on-its-sleeve attitude of the genre it both lampoons and lifts up.

There's nothing I enjoy more than a good game of cards in a movie. The psychology of betting, done right, can really prove an insight into the characters of a movie. But Casino Royale also is chock full of tense action and a Bond who is finding his footing as an action star. Daniel Craig was perfectly suited for a fledgling Bond, rougher in demeanor but exhibiting moments of that Bond suaveness that make 007 the icon he is. And, of course, the character of Vesper, seductive siren that she is, is one of the most fascinating Bond girls the series has ever had. She turns the formula on its head and leaves an indelible mark on Bond's career and heart.

It would be fair to say that Alien continues from where the Aliens left off. But it would also be fair to say that there is nothing remotely remarkable about any aspect of Alien 3, and furthermore, that Alien 3 is an absolutely pointless movie that sucked everything good from the original Alien 3 treatment in favor of a garbage palette of a setting and a forgettable conceit that drives an unremarkable narrative.

The Invisible Man (2020)
Rating: 59/100

The positive press around this movie surprised me, so I went in with higher expectations than I should have. Ultimately, what I discovered was a movie where the titular character was just a formless, pointless cardboard cutout of a character that had no personality. The Invisible Man was a generic villain, and that left Moss with the unenviable task of carrying a movie by herself. The psychological torture she endures in the movie is kind of interesting, but at the end of the film, the wheels come off and the narrative descends into a bad mix of superheroic action on a low budget and standard horror. The final act really drives a nail into the coffin of the movie.

In all honesty, this film has to overcome the character of Deadpool, one that I've slowly become less and less enamored with over the years. As a comic fan, Deadpool has been so overused and every possible ounce of humor has been rung out of him like a dingy dish rag. However, this movie had the opportunity to present the character in live-action for the first time (yes, the first time), and it's successful because it doesn't rely on cameo gags to get Deadpool over with the audience. In fact, the lack of major Marvel stars is what works well here, because this is Deadpool's movie, with a focus on the tragic aspects of the character, underlining that he laughs through his pain.

A mind-bending reexamination of the state of reality as we know it, the dystopian future of the Matrix is so heavy and overbearing that it's almost too hard to breathe outside of the simulation. The Wachowskis manage to turn the standard hero's journey into something wholly unique in the cinematic world, breathing new life into science fiction, and almost single-handedly redefining the action sequence, for good or ill. Talented cast, memorable editing and color design, and a light but well-written script make the Matrix into a fundamental must-watch for any young director.

Far from the greatest action film ever made, there are some scenes where the rhythm of the movie is interrupted. As chase movie, it's probably the best - if not merely one of the best. But when this movie lands, it lands. Great, visceral action is hard to come by these days, usually heavily processed by studio interference. The tone of Mad Max is bleak and painful, like your nails digging into your fist when you squeeze too hard. As for Tom Hardy, he is an adequate replacement for Gibson, but the movie really showcases the character of Furiosa, who is one of the greatest revelations of the 2010s.

Black Panther
Rating: 79/100

Another Marvel origin film. Although, to be fair, it could be said that this is less Panther's origin than Killmonger's. As such, we get a small amount of nuance and exploration of a character with some internal conflict and flaw. Unfortunately, the rest of the cast isn't lucky enough to receive the same treatment. Almost annoyingly perfect, Panther's crew feels a little two-dimensional, but the nation of Wakanda instead feels lively and unique, a true living and breathing setting. However, as with most Marvel movies, the villains are given short shrift. Killmonger's defeat concretely ends his run in the franchise, and Klaw - one of the great minor Marvel villains - doesn't get remotely enough love, instead being relegated into a dull, one-off baddie. What Panther showed is a ton of potential weighed down by the strict adherence to the origin story formula. All that said, if Panther can maintain the quality of its first film, the second one should be amazing if its unencumbered by the trappings of a first film pattern.

I'm often torn on this film because, while it's phenomenally written, I absolutely loathe the characters involved. Sometimes, a character, despite great acting and writing, is positioned in such a way as to be absolutely unendurable, and that's both of the leads. It's strange to think, I guess, because Winslet and Carrey are such talented actors, but the roles they play just irk to no end. That said, the concept is great, the script is great, the presentation couldn't be better. It's a high concept piece executed as well as could be. I just can't stand the leads.

And here, we have them all in one place, milking their meager talents harder than ever before in a movie that none of them are really qualified to perform in! Chicago is probably the most overrated musical of all time.

The Maltese Falcon (1941)
Rating: 83/100

An absolutely awesome detective story. Even Bogart can't bring this one down. As an aside, have you ever noticed how many actors have played Sam Spade? It's gotta be like 400.

Goldeneye
Rating: 93/100

My favorite Bond film, GoldenEye is successful thanks in no small part to the best Bond and the best Bond villain being put together in some fantastic locations. There's also a sorrowful underlying subplot about the archaic nature of Bond in a post-Cold War world, and the constant representations of Soviet menace really underscore the feeling of a ghost coming home to roost.

It's jumbled but I also love the sense of chaos and tension it helps create too. The movie wouldn't be the same without it.

12 Monkeys
Rating: 98/100

One of my favorite science fiction films of all time, the topsy-turvy nature of 12 Monkeys leaves you constantly questioning everything. Brad Pitt's scenery-chewing performance captivates while the narrative worms its way into your brain, turning over and over again in a way that really seems to capture the idea of insanity. Reality itself is up for debate, and somehow its the rules of time travel that seem the most concrete in this movie, rather than any particular moment in time itself.

Knives Out
Rating: 70/100

This is a tough rating, but I think the film burns its ensemble cast and spends too much time focused on the main character. The murder mystery aspect of the story almost feels shrugged off far too early. That said, Benoit Blanc seems perfectly poised to star in an unending string of detective thrillers, and I would be standing in line to watch every one of them.
