Watched this with the gf last night. I feel like I would have absolutely loved this as a kid. As it stands... I still had a decent time!

I feel like they had a good feel for what makes Scooby-Doo as a property tick. It's known for being cutesy and cheesy (especially cheesy) all-American comfort food, and this movie works on that level. The animation itself seems to be somewhat polarizing, but I personally love the style they went for and felt that the Hanna-Barbara vibe carried over well.

I'm still thrown for a loop, in a GREAT way, that they cast Tracy Morgan as Captain Caveman. Never would have seen that coming, and it saved that section from feeling like total filler. On the flip side, I really like Ken Jeong, but he was a weird choice for Dyno-Mutt here. I also missed Matthew Lillard as Shaggy. Otherwise, good voice casting all around.

It's not exactly the most polished movie out there; they tried to tackle a lot of different things here, and some scenes drag as a result. All in all, though, there are enough good components here that I'd recommend it to families and nostalgic adults.

And I'd definitely see a Dick Dastardly & Muttley movie on opening weekend.

Throw out your gold teeth and see how they roll.

Inspired by an awesome thread on CE where someone is doing write-ups of all their songs.

Gaucho is my favorite and has been for many years, but you could really make an argument for any of these. One of the strongest discographies out there IMO.

Shouts out to Two Against Nature, though - I've been obsessed with it lately, and I think "Jack of Speed" is their best song outright.

I actually took Hollow Knight to R3 in my bracket. My reasoning was a mix of "Hollow Knight fans will crawl over broken glass for their game," "I need SOMETHING in my bracket that isn't chalk" and "Noctis lost to a fucking glove." It may not have panned out, but I still don't regret that upset pick; Lord knows I've made dumber ones in the past.

I took Monster Hunter to R3 as well, but was sweating bullets about it. It just screamed "3-seeded choker" to me. So, Monster Hunter really earned my respect this contest, even in its honorable loss to DQXI.

I managed front row tickets and went with my dad in...must have been 2011 or so. Maybe a bit earlier.

Wow, that must have been great! I finally saw Steely Dan in fall 2018, myself. I'll always regret not seeing them while Walter was still alive, but it was an excellent concert all the same. Don was a consummate professional and performed his ass off, and The Danettes stole the show when they took the vocal reins on "Dirty Work."

That was a top three concert for me, behind Kero Kero Bonito and Erykah Badu.

Oh man, I wish I had seen the first thread. Steely Dan is my personal GOAT. Tagging this harder than a cinderblock.

My personal favorite Steely Dan song is "Jack of Speed," with "Glamour Profession" and "Deacon Blues" close behind. Also, I'm definitely one of those dudes who swears by "Night By Night" - it's my favorite song on Pretzel Logic.

Gaucho > The Royal Scam > Aja > Two Against Nature > Katy Lied > Everything Must Go > Can't Buy a Thrill > Pretzel Logic > Countdown to Ecstasy

Pissing myself at that second option. But yeah, my Gamepad is still golden.

The discs are the real problem with the Wii U IMO. They're incredibly sensitive to any kind of wear, so it's already a pain to find preowned Wii U games that don't produce an INVALID DISC error. This will only get worse in the years to come.

Back in my undergrad days, I did this all the time with Speedway's "Speedy Cafe." Being able to buy lunch/dinner with rewards points was a godsend for a broke college student. Also, their chili cheese wrap is delicious.

Nowadays? Not too often, since most of the Speedy Cafes closed. I'll still get a sub or wrap from them if I pass by one that's still open, though. I also dig the pizza at Casey's and the southern fixins at Huck's.

TopicAre ages 23-27 the loneliest years of your life?
TheCodeisBosco
05/18/20 11:41:14 AM

This is the age where you and your peers are no longer linked by a "common purpose" - high school, finishing undergrad, getting used to the quirks of adulthood, etc. I've noticed that a lot of my peers, when they hit this age, fell into three camps.

1) They get drunk (often literally) off the freedom and have to do everything MONDO. Life goals - home ownership, marriage, having kids, etc.? Forget tackling one goal at a time, we need to knock 'em all out ASAP, or we're not keeping up with the Joneses! Going out on the weekend? Time to crawl across every bar in sight, every time we go out! In other words, these people are taking an "eating sugar from the jar" approach to life.

2) On the opposite side of the spectrum, you have the folks who leave the social rat race behind at this point and just prefer staying in, binging Netflix/video games and all that.

3) Then there's the camp that just cliques up super hard and takes a "no new friends" approach. They've got their crew and that's that; they're basically out of the social rat race too, despite technically staying social.

None of these people are doing anything inherently wrong. But, these camps do make for a particularly challenging environment for those trying to make new friends. This is especially true for those of us who take a chill approach to socializing and would rather just kick it at one low-key bar, or heaven forbid, a coffeehouse instead.

Compared to the unbridled joy of the undergrad social life, mid-twenties socializing is a jarring shift. I'll be honest, I have yet to really acclimate to it. But I have met awesome new friends who are in their 30s (usually mid-late 30s), so that's definitely helped me deal with it! Might be worth a try for anyone else who finds mid-twenties social life alienating.

As an aside, regarding the second camp I mentioned - I also noticed that many of them doubled down hard on their quirkier/unpleasant characteristics once becoming more isolated. While there's nothing wrong with being an introvert, I do highly recommend trying to avoid that fate.

I've met a surprising number of people who are passionate about their preferred gas stations. I'm totally one of them.

I was a Speedway man for a long time, and they still have one of the best rewards point systems of all time. I'd like to go back to Fortnite for a second.

"Kids all talk about Fortnite and Tiktok the way we used to talk about 90s tech. Leave it alone."

We don't even need to go that far back for an analogue. When Pokemon Go came out, it was basically the Summer of Love for millennials. For all that game's foibles, it truly did make for an outstanding monoculture moment. But while the PoGo players were getting fresh air and making friends at the Pokestop hotspots, there was a vocal contingent of older folks shaking their collective fist at the whole thing. These degenerates are obsessed with a kids' game! They're gonna walk into traffic! We wanted young people to go outside, but not like THIS!

Pokemon Go fans laughed these miserable SOBs off, and rightfully so. But then, starting one year later, the millennial crowd that stood their ground with PoGo pulled the exact same judgmental BS with the Fortnite crowd. No self-awareness whatsoever - they just straight up grabbed the "OLD MAN YELLS AT CLOUD" torch and ran with it.

Man, that was some depressing shit.

On an unrelated note, seeing my quote in the OP put a shit-eating grin on my face. That was a great day to be here.

Gonna be honest here - if I was a restaurant owner, I would just raise the prices within reason and as necessary, and leave it at that. Realistically speaking, a "COVID-19 surcharge" is just gonna piss people off and result in stingy/withheld tips, insults toward staff, etc. I don't agree with reactions like those at all, but it's plain as day that they'll happen and that's just how it is.

That having been said...
