Discounting fighting games, is Rocket League the strongest sports game on this site? What would anyone take to beat it? NBA Jam maybe?

Anything with Mario in the title, Punch-Out, and Tecmo Bowl immediately jump to mind.

I'd also take Wii Sports over Rocket League.

In a perfect world NHL Hiltz and NFL 2K5 would win too.

It's Kingdom Hearts on coke, with S-tier music and 3D Metroidvania world design.

I think the pacing bogs a little during the underground tunnel section, but other than that, it's pretty much unimpeachable perfection. That fucking mansion is still one of the best designed gaming areas ever.

The mansion is so well done that every time you leave it, the game suffers a noticeable dip in quality.

I understand your Zelda-fatigue, but Super Metroid almost beat reigning-champ Majora's Mask back in 2015. It's not like every game in the franchise is invincible.

I think SS should be here and I generally agree with the choice to sacrifice those middling franchise entries for more varied acclaimed games even if they are weaker. SS is still one of the best reviewed games of the decade and is generally liked - it can be easy to forget but a weaker Zelda is still a damn good game.

Skyward Sword was not only terrific but easily the best Zelda of the decade IMO. People complain that it didn't evolve the franchise, and while I respect that argument, I enjoyed SS much more than cakewalk ALBW and dungeon-less BotW.

What about AM2R? I know it's not an "official" Metroid game but it was a pretty damn fine remake.

Loved it. Zero Mission 2 was amazing, and the new boss fights were surprisingly great. That said, I'd still rank Samus Returns above it. The new aiming system made Metroid feel like it had evolved.

Imagine how wild this division would be if Skyward Sword were the 13 seed.

It likely beats SMG2 based on the poll below, but what about Witcher 3? Skyrim doubled SS in a GotY poll (also below), and we have virtually no data on SS thanks to its absence in the 2015 contest. Hard to say if the Zelda name is strong enough to carry SS out of this division.

A ton of top scoring Gurus have Nioh today. That's a pretty exciting matchup to me. I personally don't think Nioh has a shot, but a big section of the board does.

...Or they just had no faith in indie games when predicting.

I think people are underrating Nioh, and don't forget that the sequel just came out.

It's literally paradigm redefining and completely changes everything for all future narrative RPGs but this is gamefaqs. Nobody here cares about the fact we finally have a game that can unambiguously compete with the best from Paul Auster, or Gabriel Garca Marquez, or any other lit fic authors worthy of the name. It's a game that aggressively defies the conventions of games and has an actively antagonistic, fiercely challenging vibe versus what might be the ultimate 'comfort food' game in this bracket. When was the last time this site took a revolutionary shake-up well?

Had zero interest in DE before this post. Did some research, and now I'm keeping my eyes peeled for the PS4 version when it comes out.

Both Metroid and Castlevania have basically abandoned Metroidvania, so that might be a reason for all the indie games picking up the slack.

Samus Returns was the best 2D Metroid since Super. Should've made the bracket, but what hurt it was being released so late in the 3DS' lifespan.

I'm regretting not picking it to beat Skyrim. I was back and forth so much, because it's the most important match.

Ultimately, I settled on Skyrim because all of these needs to happen:

-Big Netflix boost
-Skyrim gets punished for Bethesda
-A developer rally by CDPR
-Skyrim has to get weaker naturally
-Undertale had to screw up the numbers

The main point is the last one. Skyrim is behind Mario 64, which lost to Undertale. If the gap is more like 55-45 instead of 60-40, then Witcher has a shot.

Keep in mind Skyrim was well established in late 2015, whereas W3 was less than a year old. Hell, I didn't even have a console that could play it at the time. W3 had MUCH more room for growth in these past 5 years.

Bloodborne is too tough for the other games here, only few games can beat Bloodborne and those are the juggernauts of open world gaming, things like Breath of the Wild, Witcher 3, Skyrim. Other games i think have low chances, but i could be wrong.
Games like Last of Us or God of War or Resident Evil can upset it, but BB has the higher favor.

That's why we should have actually had Skyward Sword, FFXIII, Mario 3D World, all the Pokemon in the bracket. They at least would have some midcarder (for this bracket) strength.

Not liking Fire Emblem's performance. Good thing I have Awakening losing next round and Three House to Xenoblade.

Relax, it's doubling a 10-seed. The other losers in today's four-pack are a visual novel, an indie game, and a hated game.

Calling it now, Fire Emblem vs Bloodborne will be a classic.

If ME2 loses this division, it will be because BioWare wasn't able to keep the series alive and ME2's strength fell as a result.

It'll have more to do with REmake 2 being a more recent game and the RE series in general having done more in recent years. RE has been busy since 2017.

Telltale really should've focused their resources into 2-3 strong series instead of going wide.

And this is coming from a huge Telltale fan. I loved their take on TWD, Wolf Among Us, Borderlands, and Game of Thrones.

But any indie author will tell you that you build a fanbase by writing a trilogy or series, not by writing a bunch of standalone books with series potential. Many audiences won't even touch a series until it's completed for fear of getting permanently stuck with a cliffhanger ending (See: Game of Thrones books).

I was asleep for the RE talk but 7 would easily beat 3. 3 is the lowest selling numbered game, even behind 0 when you consider ports. It is also low in the rankings more generally. This is all before the remake comes out of course!

If the match happened today, I would take 3 over 7.

R3make hype + Classic PS1 RE + 90s game + Match Pic (Nemesis cover art or Tubetop Jill, take your pick) would be enough for a win.

Of all the results from today's matches, the only one that looks off to me is ME2/RE7.

Maybe RE7 is a lot stronger than I gave it credit for, but this doesn't look too good for ME2.

Everything else going as expected.

RE is a big name for a 16 seed.
