It almost feels like cheating to have a song by a non-Pokemon composer get this high up. But I care not for such arbitrary rules, because this song is great! Its a combination of tobys Deltarune style and the best of Pokemon battle themes. No joke: when I first heard this, I put it on loop and listened to it for probably an hour, then ripped it from Youtube and listened to it on my phone for like a solid two weeks. Its infectious. Its great at getting my blood pumping, and its got a great melody, and everything about it is just great, great, great.

Ahh, Sky Tower. How I love you. Sky Tower is life. Sky Tower is love. Get on board the Sky Tower and let all your cares wash away. Sky Tower is so soothing but also mysterious but also foreboding but also...I dont even know. Its a combination of emotions, some of which I dont think have been invented yet.

This isnt my first time with Sky Tower. Its kind of a shame I couldnt put a new discovery at the tippity top, but I asked for the best of Pokemon, and I got Sky Tower. (I also got happy town music.) Congrats to Player_0 for taking home the gold, and thank you to everyone who nominated! I feel so much more Pokeliterate now.

I had previously heard the Brawl version of this, but I think I only encountered the original version in BOST. Needless to say, I was very impressed. (I actually prefer the Brawl version, believe it or not!) I love the slow build of this song its taking its time, but its not fucking around. It knows its going to beat you down. Does anyone remember when I said that Route 3 was as high as it was because of like three notes? What catapults this song into godlike tiers is 1:55. You know the part. Its one of my favorite moments in any song.

Temporal Tower straight up gives me chills. The atmosphere it evokes is so strong, so present in every note that Im left in awe. Although Sky Tower placed higher, Temporal Tower is probably my favorite occurrence of the Mystery Dungeon chimes/bells.

Fun fact: Id heard this song before the topic, but I hadnt considered it a 10 until I listened through everything. It was originally an 8.5, then it got bumped to a 10. For a brief moment, it was even number one.

This song makes me dizzy. Thats how good it is. I never knew I needed more DS piano in my life, but this topic has shown me the error of my ways. All this really is two pianos playing and possibly some light percussion maybe? But its emotive, like any great piano song. This is, I believe, the champions theme (again, learned this from the comments), and what a thrilling encounter it must be.

Great Canyon is another song I would call straightforward: no fancy frills, no elaborate presentation. But it works really well. Its a quieter song thats full of surprising majesty. Its hard to really describe why I like this so much. Its just a solid, catchy listen, and its proof songs dont need a lot to be good.

This is such a happy, bubbly theme for a final boss. (I read the Youtube comments and now I get why this is.) Yet theres a unique blend of menace under the bubbliness too. The contrast makes for a really interesting listen, that pulsating drumbeat under the cheery melody. If anyone knows any other dissonant songs like this, hit me up!

This song is legit just a Game Boy Color hip-hop beat. That grainy ass GSC bass works so wonderfully here. Dark Cave is super earthy and gritty and dirty. I seriously cant emphasize enough how much this song would work with rap lyrics overlaid on top.

This is the last GSC song on this list. Shoutouts to these games for having the most overall improvement. Most of their songs started sub-3.5, but got gradually bumped up after relistens. Not Dark Cave though Dark Cave was always a keeper.

Fire Island Volcano is the opposite: it isnt until the song gets going that it really picks up steam for me; that frenetic string and that tribal-type percussion and that damn didgeridoo all combine into this amazing package. This is another song that does so many things I like in it that its impossible for me not to love it.

Here it is! The superior version. This is another song that oozes insanity, like I feel like my skin is crawling with bugs at some parts of this. That static-y, faded guitar, the long drags toward the loop...everything is just so good here. I very much prefer this to the Smash version in part because of the lower-quality instruments; they add something to the song.

If I rated songs based solely on first five seconds, Second Dark Matter Battle might actually win the whole topic. God that scream/Pokemon cry/whatever it is pounds me into the song and then the beginning instrumentation, with those Mystery Dungeon chimes...its amazing. Simply amazing.

The rest of the song, though...its not bad, per se, but coming off the highs of the first five or ten seconds, its such a letdown. I dont remember really anything of the rest of the song despite listening to this a bunch, but that beginning is...wow. Very impactful stuff.

Real talk though this song is literally 39 seconds long before the loop. Why so short? With some more development, this could easily break 9 territory. Still, for what it is, its pretty great.

Im not sure why the complete set was nominated here, when the main theme is basically the only thing of note for me. (I didnt deduct points for the intro or epilogue, dont worry.) And hey, look at that, its the PMD1 ending melody, with some extra flourishes like at 1:30. Boy, those Mystery Dungeon bells are all over this song. I really like this, its very lovely and engaging.

For the record: Mystery Dungeon 1s ending theme is at least a 9. Missed opportunity from the nominators!

Last 7.5! Very nice and evocative ambient track here. I love the bells and the glitch/computer noises in the background. This is a very lush song, lots of stuff going on but it never feels too crowded or anything, everything serves a purpose.

I cant tell if this song is meant to be, like, a joke song or not? Its so goofy and its apparently the theme of a goofy character. Either way its super funky. Love the groove here, love the claps, love the guitar. Joke or not, this is a classic.

Id forgotten what song this was, but when it started playing just now, it brought a huge smile to my face. Now were officially in the upper echelon, the cream of the crop. Route 10 has this amazing accordion that conjures up this wistful image of walking down a street in France. I imagine this is what French people listen to when they play Pokemon Go.

Been a while since weve had a Mystery Dungeon drop! This would be at least a 9, but man that one flute-like sample that leads throughout the song is so shrill, particularly in the high notes. I dont really mind it per se, but it does knock it down quite a few points. Which is a shame, because theres a lot to really love here, like the sense of ominous dread that mixes nicely with the pretty chill pace. Cool song.

Route 3 is this high mostly for a sequence of two notes, which first appears at 0:20: a sharp dip into a low register and then a return to a high note. Its so good and I melt every time I hear it. And this video is extended to seven minutes, so I heard it a lot! The rest of the song is nice and DESTINY and all that, but those two notes set it apart.

One thing Ive learned in this ranking is I tend to dig the BW samples overall; theyre very playful and they seem shockingly versatile. Driftveil City is a good example of this (the song, not the city, Ive never been to the city).

This is a song that is best served in chiptune form. I dont know if theres even a version of this with non-chip samples or live instruments, but I love how the relentless percussion serves as the backbone here, and how the different sound channels have this nice interplay. Thats a quality thats best found in chiptunes. This song, much my comments on Route 10, feels slower than it actually is, and thats really neat to hear.

Moody pianocentric song. I especially like the part at 0:40 when the meter gets all, stuttery. And I also like how it sort of picks up in mood and tempo halfway through the loop before seguing back into the moody (not sad, just moody) parts. Very cool.

Yeah, I think it's kinda impossible to put into words what it felt like for little kid me, who got Crystal as his very first game (I had played other games before, but this was the first game that was MINE), reaching Lance and hearing that theme. And then having to suffer through Dragonite spam.

I always felt like the big plot twist that you battle Red at the end of GSC must have been incredible for kids.

When I was rating everything, I originally had a song at last place a 1.5 that I thought would piss people off, because of how iconic it was. It was this song. But during the relisten, it really clicked for me in a very profound way. Its more than a normal battle theme theres definitely a sense of ominous dread, like youre up against a huge obstacle you dont know if you can get past. Thats super neat.

Almost all of the remaining GSC songs started out pretty low, but got bumped up on relisten.

Im a sucker for this sort of traditional Asian song. I really like how this starts, and if it continued in that vein with more like woodblocky stuff, it would probably rank higher. But its pretty unique. I also really like the brief weird meter toward the loop point, when the song speeds up and kind of loses itself for a bit.

Pretty standard rousing battle theme, but this ones pretty fun. Its almost laidback at parts, probably because youre fighting a friend and not a rival or a giant Pokemon that can make mountains collapse or some nonsense. This feels like the theme of a good, clean fight, and I respect that.

This was originally like a 2.5 or 3 or something on the initial listen, but I kept coming back to it and liking it more and more. Its got an interesting melody and it puts those...iffy RSE samples to good use.

Looking it over, this is the highest ranking song from the original RSE. There are two songs still to come from ORAS. I didnt realize how low I ranked most of the songs from RSE! I guess they just didnt interest me as much as some of the other games soundtracks, and I honestly wasnt feeling the weird trumpets that much. I originally had lots of songs from GSC ranked low, but they got bumped up with relistens and I guess RSE either stayed at the bottom or got knocked down to the bottom. Ah well.

Is it weird that I dont find this song creepy? I find it more sad than anything. Like youre at a funeral for someone who died too young. I actually used Pokemon Tower in a list, which is a similar song to this not sure which one I prefer more. I guess this is one of the more iconic songs in the series, maybe because of the lore surrounding it. Its good! Sad and a little spooky.

Aww, Lake was my favorite nomination out of the 4! Probably one of my favorites from the whole series, honestly. I've said this before, but I definitely thought this would rank the highest out of all my nominations. Guess second highest isn't too far off, but wow was I wrong about Azalea Town haha. Well, it was that first part that made me think that you'd like the song, so I guess in a sense, I was fairly accurate about that.

Lake was good! Like I said earlier (and like Player_0 hints at), we're at a point where I genuinely like everything, and most of the songs are keepers.

Really? It's so interesting seeing what songs in this topic people are really into and not into. I went into this with a pretty blank slate.

This is super unique and unlike anything else nominated. I actually like this more after it loops (this is an interesting reaction I have to some songs, probably based around the idea of repetition). That accordion is super smooth and really spices up the track with a unique Shimomura flavor. I also really like how deliberate and slower this version is compared to the original. That said, I do prefer the original (which hasnt shown up yet!), but this is still a fun take on it. I like remixes/arrangements that do different things instead of just copying the originals verbatim.

Originally this was a 3. Then I relistened several times and bumped it up to its current position. This is another example of a song I appreciate more than I connect with. Songs like that can still place highly, but this one is hampered by a barrier I have trouble breaching. I like how theres this undercurrent of menace all throughout, like Im being stalked by some evil Pokemon that can dissolve me with a goo beam or something.
