Gotta go w/ PS2 for the sheer scope of the library. I loved by Gamecube, but Nintendo still struggled w/ 3rd party support and this overall was one the darkest periods for Nintendo. Xbox had a small library, but man, the great games on it REALLY hooked me when I finally got one. I played the hell out of Knights the Old Republic I and II, as well as Jade Empire.

Only main gripe is the constantly respawning enemies. Obviously the games are hard as hell, but they have tight, precise controls and unlimited continues (except for 3) so it's a fair challenge that can be overcome. Still never beat any of em, but i considered even getting go the last boss an accomplishment.

I played through it once, when it was new and never felt the urge to really revisit it again until listening to a Retronauts episode on it, where they made such a passionate case for it, I decided to give it another go, all these years later. I guess an upside to the remaster is being able to speed up the game, so I'm less annoyed by drawing spells from enemies, so I'm enjoying it a lot more now.

What I didn't expect was to be hit so hard by nostalgia from a game I wasn't all that keen on when it released. Funny thing is, it's less for the game and more for the time it came out. I graduated in 1999, so I remember how anticipated the game was my senior year, and then it released, finally, the fall after I graduated. During that time period, I really didn't do much, other than hang out with a couple of really close friends of mine, and we played FFVIII at my friend's house a lot. Not long after, they both joined the military, so this game reminds me of that like, last few months of feeling like a teenager before we all went our separate ways and had to grow up... which funny enough, "growing up" is kind of a big theme of the game.

Sorry about the long blog post, but, anywho... what are y'all's thoughts on FFVIII?

The idea is this helps the economy by putting money back in to it. If my wife and I both get laid off money is gonna be VERY tight. Our 1 BR apartment is $1,400/month and that's considered "cheap" for San Diego. We'd basically have to really tighten our belts for awhile until things get back to normal. The problem with that, is that means even less money is going into the economy, so more people are getting laid off, businesses going under, etc. Part of why the Great Depression was so bad was because the Hoover administration's response was to initially do nothing, and just tell people to tighten their belts up more which managed to collapse the economy even more.

Yeah retail is the worst. worked at a gamestop, woman tried to buy her kid GTA, told her its rated M for blah blah and she was like yeah what ever, then like 4 hours she came back and tried to return it for HALF of the reasons I told her it was rated M.

Funny thing, years ago I worked at Hollywood Video, and a kid wanted to rent GTA: San Andreas. His mom asked him what it was and he was like "It's a driving game" I decided to speak up so I didn't catch shit just in case and was like "Actually mam, Grand Theft Auto is Rated M, for mature, which means it's intended for players over the age of 17. It has violence, drug use, language, sex, etc"

She turned to her son and was like "1. You are absolutely not getting this game and 2. You're grounded for lying"

I felt bad for the kid, but you gotta protect your own ass when working with the public.

it's like playing a demo, you're not even halfway into the actual journey and you're presented with what's basically a "buy the game to continue playing" screen without having accomplished any real goal.

I mean... that's how "Fellowship" basically ends.

I was thinking I'd initially disagree with this as I think I'd rather see a normal console from Nintendo but I think I'll agree with your statement. I don't really use the portable aspect of my Switch but I certainly appreciate that I can take it with me if I want to. I guess it's pretty much the only singular console that can do that without buying many additional things, like say the Vita and the PS4's "remote play" function.

I'd love to see Nintendo come out with a really powerful, competitive console like they did back with the SNES that competed directly with the Genesis and that has been sorely lacking since the release of the GameCube which I think was a fantastic system. I'd like to see something as powerful or nearly as powerful as these new systems coming around the end of the year with some modicum of portability and with new technology we certainly didn't have twenty years ago it should be possible. Tablets and smartphones that are as insanely powerful as they are today should make easy platforms for consoles to have smaller footprints.

Nintendo competed on straight up power up until the Wii. PS1 did better because they went with discs, but the N64 hardware was pretty damn powerful for the time. After that, they started shooting themselves in the foot. They had a console that was flat out more powerful than the PS2, but went with mini-discs when a huge PS2 selling point was it being an affordable DVD player as well. Now I'm not saying they'd have win that gen again, but had they ran with DVDs and lured more 3rd parties back to them, the Gamecube would have fared much better.

N64: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It's a basic answer, but that game with better controls and camera would be great. It's still a fun game, but it does show it's age and is clunky in a lot of areas.

PS1: Final Fantasy IX. Feel like the game doesn't get enough love as it didn't seem to have the same fanfare VII and VIII did on release. At that point everyone was gearing up for the PS2 to come out, so late era PS1 games seemed to quietely come and go, and FFX came out about a year later and grabbed everyone's attention.

People keep repeating this, but as long as Bernie goes into the convention with 1,991 delegates there's really nothing they can do. The DNC actually changed their rules after 2016 so super delegates won't have a say unless there's a brokered convention, and even then it's after the 2nd ballot doesn't produce a nominee.

So between Sonic (1-3&K only) vs Mario? Honestly Sonic.

They had the benefit of not feeling like they play themselves. Later Sonic games feel like you just kinda hold the stick in a direction and watch everything fly by.

Hard choice. For a while, you couldnt even go back in Mario games. Sonic games, you could go back, but it made it tough of some levels... Or complicated. And moving so fast, you could easily lose track of where you were, and how to get back. So, O choose Mario where you could move back over Sonic. And Sonic over Mario where you couldnt go back. And Zelda II is probably e worse Zelda game ever. For the few times Ive tried my best to play it...

You really only couldn't go back in the first Mario game.

Anyway, as a whole, the 2D Mario games smoked Sonic. For a game that hyped up speed, they sure liked slowing Sonic down a lot. There just always seemed more to do in Mario games as well.
