You can breed a house cat with a whale and you can make a rock punch animals in the face.

Not that surprising it's dark.

It's kind of amazing that the main game storylines include attempted genocide and child abuse and that's still somehow not as dark as the Mystery Dungeon games can get.

I wouldnt be able to recall anything about the story to save my life because it was just that forgettable

This is also a fair point, I pretty much actively forgot everything about the main story because I was always getting more invested in the side missions. Definitely not a game that prioritizes the story.

Marcus, the protagonist of WD2, is totally different than Aiden Pearce.

even though he's serious about his mission, he often comes off as carefree and goofy.

in fact, he and his friends often seem like they're having fun.

This is exactly why I like WD2 so much more than the first one. It's arguably even cringier and dumber, but it's made more bearable by having really good gameplay and a cast of characters that are actually having fun. The mission where you steal a talking car and it turns out to just be Wrench trolling Marcus still makes me laugh. Also it doesn't have serial killer victims as a collectible, fucking hell.

I actually really like the first game's box art for the PS3 version. It looks really pretty, in a desolate kinda way. If I got any enjoyment out of zombie apocalypse scenarios then I'd almost want to give it a proper try just because the box art looks that good. Part 2's box art though? Blech. If it wasn't attached to a popular IP I'd never give a game with that box art the time of day.

Hardcore stealth game. One just absolutely focused on sneaking through places without raising any alarms without having to figure out a way for players who want to shoot everything to also enjoy the game.

You might like Mark of the Ninja. Fighting anyone face to face is an absolute last resort, and you're literally just some ninja going up against dudes with guns, and you're about as durable as that implies. It's not impossible to recover if you fuck up, but you're generally encouraged to not fuck up. You can even do this Arkham Asylum-esque thing where you can scare the guards and make them freak the fuck out. It's a really fun mix of making you feel badass and vulnerable at the same time.

Is it like how Grand Blue is a diving manga?

Nah, nothing like that. It's more of a fish out of water scenario; the main character is from a big city, and he switches to an agricultural high school mostly because it'll get him away from his harshly critical father. A lot of the humor comes from the main character being blindsided by the reality of farm life, like seeing a chicken's head get chopped off in the first episode; he's a little freaked out by it while the rural kids are more casual about it. His father is actually one of my favorite characters in the manga because of this running gag where he looks so intense that he keeps getting mistaken for Yakuza, and he remains blissfully unaware of it. It's also educational in an entertaining way, because it draws from the author's experiences from growing up on a dairy farm. It's my favorite Slice of Life story of all time, currently.

What are you playing atm?

I guess I'm currently bouncing between a few different games at the moment. God of War 2018, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, and Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade.

Are you enjoying it?

Explorers of Sky is one of my favorite games just for the story, Path of Radiance is really fun to cheese with mounted units, Binding Blade is kinda fun once I really got into it (Rutger is OP, and Shanna is actually a good unit who got an unfairly bad rap for a while). And as for God of War, I actually expected to not like it at first because I've been burned by really hyped up games not really doing anything for me before, and I played Devil May Cry 5 before I got around to it so now I have unrealistically high expectations for action gameplay, but I've been getting really absorbed in GoW lately. I love the father-son dynamic between Kratos and Atreus, and especially how Kratos is an incorrigible stick in the mud with no sense of humor, and one of my favorite things to do in a video game now is counter attack enemies by Captain America shield punching them off of cliffs. Funniest shit every time.

What genre do you like the best?

Eh, don't really have a favorite genre as long as I'm having fun playing it. Some of my favorite games are visual novels even (Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors; Ace Attorney series; and I like the premise behind the Danganronpa series, but I haven't played those yet).

What game(s) do you recommend everyone give a shot?

Strongly recommend Guacamelee, it's a really fun Metroidvania with a colorful Mexican aesthetic; Mark of the Ninja, a 2D stealth game that expects you to actually be stealthy, while giving you a bunch of fun tools and maneuvers to do it with; and Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, a Strategy RPG with a continent spanning, epic story inspired by Norse and Celtic mythology, and a really memorable mid-game twist. I especially like how the maps you play on actually line up with the world map shown between chapters, and how legendary weapons (only wieldable by certain characters) are specifically balanced around making you feel like you're controlling an army of powerful and legendary heroes.

Pokemon Adventures: I don't even care if you like Pokemon or not, it's just a really solid adventure series.

Silver Spoon: Slice of Life Comedy series about a boy who's used to living in a large urban city, and decides to attend an agricultural school partly to get away from his highly critical father (who surprisingly turned out to be my favorite character due to a running gag later in the manga), and partly because he believes it'll be easy due to his intelligence. He frequently makes a fool of himself early on because he didn't expect the agriculture life to actually be difficult. It's also surprisingly informative, given that the author actually grew up on a dairy farm.

Raquel Applegate (Wild Arms 4). Hits things really hard with a big fuck-off sword, one of 2 party members who can move and attack in the same turn, (over)compensates for low speed by being able to take several turns in a row with no drawback, and is dying of a terminal illness the whole time she's styling on chumps with entirely self-taught swordplay.

Seth (Fire Emblem Sacred Stones). Has high base stats for when he joins, has perfect availability, starts with A rank in both swords and lances, has better growth rates than most unpromoted units, and this is after suffering a serious injury at the start of the game.

Ludger (Tales of Xillia 2). He's basically what happens when you put a Devil May Cry character in an action RPG. If anything it's easier for him to basically solo bosses while your party members tag in for Linked Artes, and nothing else.

Kanji (Persona 4). Beat up a biker gang while he was in middle school because they were keeping his mother up at night, and if his starting equipment is any indication he was armed with a steel chair at most.

The R1 counter just yeeting enemies everywhere never gets old to me. I never even got into the old games and I was expecting to not like the new one without even giving it a chance, for reference. I also love the dynamic between Kratos and Atreus, how it's this no-nonsense dude who just wants to be left the fuck alone while teaching his son how to survive. Never had any particular nostalgia for the old games and I was kinda prepared to write this one off as not for me, but I'm kind of surprised at how much I'm actually enjoying it so far. Still not sure how I feel about starting on Give me a Challenge. It seems like the exact kind of hard mode I really hate, the kind where a single mistake can take off over half your health in the beginning. Not a fan of the troll bosses, but IIRC that's not a controversial opinion? They're the exact right mix of boring and frustrating (on my current difficulty setting) to make me hate them with every fiber of my being. Still waiting for it to live up to some of the hype I've heard about it, but at least I'm ready to admit to being wrong about passing up on it without even trying it. Only just fought the fire troll near the beginning so I'll just have to see how I feel when I start playing tomorrow.

Really liking the interactions between Kratos and Atreus so I'm probably gonna keep playing just for that tbh. I didn't know I had a strong itch for "stern father teaching his son how to survive while just wanting to be left the fuck alone" but this game is scratching that itch really well so far.

One more rec and then an "anti-rec".

Silver Spoon - It's about a boy from a big city enrolling in an agricultural high school because he wants to get away from his stern and highly critical father, and it turns out to be...not as easy as he expected. The anime kind of ends at a weird spot though, so you should definitely read the manga when you're done. One of my favorite characters from the manga isn't really done proper justice in the anime. (That character being Hachiken's dad, who always has such an intense look on his face that he keeps getting mistaken for Yakuza, a fact he seems blissfully unaware of. Funniest shit ever I tell ya.) Consider watching this clip to see if it's the kind of comedy you can get behind:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9w4nUOK12Kg

And my anti-rec is the Ace Attorney anime. It's not exactly bad, but it's also not good at all. It's very truncated compared to the games, it's not as funny, and even the animation is kinda jank. I'd honestly recommend just skipping this unless you really want to see your favorite cases with voice acting.

Kabukicho Sherlock - It's basically Sherlock Holmes, but anime af, and Sherlock's gimmick is that he summarizes each case using poorly acted rakugo.

Mairimashita! Iruma-kun - It's like Hayate the Combat Butler, except the protagonist is sold to a demon lord who's desperate for a grandson to dote on, and he has to attend a school for demons while hiding the fact he's human. It sounds really weird, but it's the good and weirdly wholesome kind of weird.

My Roommate is a Cat - I dunno if you remember that topic I made a while back, but I was wondering if you ever got around to watching this one. It's the anime where a reclusive novelist with crippling social anxiety adopts a stray cat because he needs inspiration for his next book.

Persona 4: The Animation - The fight scenes are kinda shit, but it's worth watching just for the social scenes. Yu Narukami is basically written by that one guy who picked all the funny responses and it's fucking hilarious.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Really good action shonen with a really wholesome protagonist and some kickass fight scenes.

Edit: I see you have Castlevania in your backlog, so if you end up liking that I'd also like to recommend Seis Manos. It's by the same animation studio, and it's a Mexican Wuxia featuring demonic drug cartels. Pretty fuckin' hype, yo.
