As someone who has delivered refrigerators before, be aware of which direction the door(s) open. If it doesn't open the way you want, inform whoever handles the purchase order that you would like it switched. Measure the size of the opening that the refrigerator will reside (height, wiidth, depth) (all assuming that it isn't sitting in the opening). Last thing you want, and the person doing the deliver as well, is lugging the refrigerator into the kitchen only to find out that it doesn't fit.

Oh, almost forgot this one, but its the most important. In addition to measuring the opening where it will sit, make sure you choose a size that will actually fit through your door and to its final location. People like to buy large refrigerators thinking it will magically make its way into their house.

My guess is that the bullying she got from kids her age stemmed from the parents. I don't know the age range, but I can't help but feel that these kids didn't truly comprehend what incest was, and why it was looked down upon. I honest have never read a structural report. Or at least one as extensive as that, but I'll check it out.

No, I didn't do a thesis. If I remember correctly, that was actually optional. The degree program was partially split. You either took the route for a "Master of Engineering" degree, or you went for "Master of Science". At least that's how i remember it. I would have taken the MoS if I intended to use my knowledge as a professional academic. But no, wasn't going to happen. That was like 60-70% of my reasoning. The other half being that I was already completing a thesis for another master program. And I was not about to do two.

Given that you're working at the university (if I understood that right), are you given access to your department's facilities (such as any testing equipment) to help complete your dissertation? Also, free/discounted classes or no? Just curious. I was a TA once but didn't get any benefits.

I'm getting a PhD in structural engineering right now. My particular emphasis is earthquake simulation of steel frame structures, with a special focus on connections. Column buckling is naturally a fairly important area of study there lol.

It can happen in reinforced concrete as well (in special instance of thin super high performance concrete), but section are typically so stocky that global buckling is never an issue.

That explains it then. I stopped at a master degree in structural engineering. Didn't need anything higher. That, and I had enough of engineering at that point. Cannot image how much bleed, sweat, and tears a PhD in engineering takes.

For those that are interested, you can calculate the buckling capacity of a column or frame system using a second or fourth order ODE with the appropriate number of boundary conditions. It's actually a pretty simple problem to solve, and it is how we derive the Euler buckling equation. I wouldn't be surprised if some of you solved it in your differential equations classes.

It gets more complicated in a frame system since you have to account for the geometry/stiffness and load transfer from other framing members, and the potential for simultaneous buckling and partial yielding/stiffness reduction of neighboring members. But in actual structural design we simplify the problem and err on the conservative side.

I should honestly know this.

Off the top of my head, the first thought is eccentric loading. When a load is applied to a column, but is offset from its geometric(?) center, a moment is generated in addition to the axial load. This added stress causes the column to rotate (buckle) if it is incapable of supporting these loads. Eccentric loading isn't something that can be entirely controlled, simply because the world isn't perfect. The column itself, for example, may not be homogeneous in construction/composition. Should some portion of it experience greater strain, the column is now riding a slippery slope - either it maintains this state or it gets worse.

On top of Tower of God, everyone should try reading Solo Leveling. Its currently on breaker, but it has a pretty good story and artwork. Don't know if there are any plans for animation. Also, I swear I read this somewhere, but I think The Breaker was supposed to be revived this year.
