https://gothamist.com/news/mayor-de-blasio-says-1300-new-yorkers-arrested-violating-his-curfew-should-still-face-charges

Its just too simplistic to say thats the whole story, de Blasio said. We had the curfew for a purpose because we saw too much violence of different kinds, and we had to end the violence and we did end the violence. And now adjudicating what should happen in each case depends on the specifics of the case. Thats just all there is to it. Many of the 1,349 New Yorkers who still have open criminal summonses solely for violating de Blasios curfew were physically detained for hours by the police. Others were seriously injured by members of the NYPD who were enforcing the mayors curfew, which de Blasio ended up rescinding one night early.

Nearly half of those who were written criminal summonses for curfew violation were Black, according to data from the NYPD569 people were Black or Black and Hispanic, 280 were white Hispanics, 413 were white, 59 were Asian. Violating curfew is a Class B Misdemeanor, punishable with a fine of up to $500 and as much as three months in jail or both, according to New York State penal code. Many curfew violators are due in summons court in the coming months.

A prominent Brazilian physician was suspended by Latin Americas leading Jewish hospital after comparing the fear of the coronavirus pandemic to the Holocaust. Fear is harmful to everything, Yamaguchi said. First, it paralyzes you. It makes you easy to manipulate. Anyone. Do you think that a few Nazi soldiers would be able to control the hungry Jewish herd if they did not subject them to that daily humiliation? Yamaguchi has been an ardent defender of the controversial drug hydroxychloroquine as treatment for COVID-19, but Klajner denied that was related to her suspension.

The current surge in coronavirus cases across the American South may have been caused by Northerners who traveled South for vacation around Memorial Day, said Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If you look at the South, everything happened around June 12 to June 16. It all simultaneously kind of popped, he said in an interview Tuesday with Dr. Howard Bauchner of The Journal of the American Medical Association. Independent of state reopening plans, were of the view that there was something else that was the driver. Maybe the Memorial Day, not weekend, but the Memorial Day week, where a lot of Northerners decided to go South for vacations. Because the South hadnt yet experienced large outbreaks like the Northeast, many Southern states and cities reopened bars and gyms early and didnt require people to wear masks or to practice social distancing that seriously, Redfield said. Once the virus was introduced in those areas, that could have allowed it to spread quickly.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-07-08/coronavirus-moves-nyc-affordable-housing-crisis-to-breaking-point

Two-thirds of New Yorkers rent their homes, making it Americas biggest rental market, and its always had its own crazy kind of housing math. But with unemployment soaring and the typical rent about twice the national average, the numbers no longer add up. A quarter of the citys apartment renters havent paid since March, according to the Community Housing Improvement Program (CHIP), a group that represents mostly landlords of rent-stabilized buildings. It would take something on the order of divine intervention to keep the situation from worsening. The temporary $600 weekly boost to unemployment benefits is set to expire at the end of July, unless Congress intervenes to extend it. That means many tenants whove managed to stay current on their rent payments will no longer be able to. Its going to be a mess, says Jonas Shaende, chief economist at the Fiscal Policy Institute

In New York and other densely packed cities, people who can work remotelypredominantly office workersare moving to the suburbs if they can afford it. But many renters cant. They include the poorest and most vulnerable people, particularly minorities and immigrants, documented and undocumented. Among them are also millennials with multiple roommates. So while the economic victims of Covid-19 cant be forced out of their homes, their indebtedness will grow month by month, potentially damaging their credit rating and their ability to find another landlord willing to take a chance on them.

https://www.npr.org/2020/07/08/884104509/supreme-court-undercuts-access-to-birth-control-under-obamacare

The U.S. Supreme Court has made it more difficult for women to get access to birth control as part of their health plans if their employer has a religious or moral objections to contraceptives. The opinion upheld a Trump administration rule that significantly cut back on the Affordable Care Act requirement that insurers provide free birth control coverage as part of almost all health care plans. Under the ACA, churches and synagogues were automatically exempted from the birth control insurance mandate. Not automatically exempt, however, were non-profits like religiously affiliated universities, charities and hospitals, which employ millions of people who want their health insurance plans to cover birth control for themselves and their family members.

For these non-profits, the Obama administration enacted an opt-out provision for employers with religious objections. They were required to notify the government or their insurance company, or their plan administrator so that the insurance company could provide free birth control options to individual employees, but separate from the employer's plan. That did not satisfy some religious objectors, however. They contended that signing an opt-out form or notifying their plan administrator was the same as authorizing the use of their plan for birth control.
