So I could write an original story based on Sleeping Beauty or Show White but I couldn't base that story on the Disney characters. Mickey Mouse is a bit of a different story, since Steamboat Willie will enter into public domain in 2024, unless something changes again (it's technically already in public domain due to errors in the original copyright but no one wants to fight Disney over it) but the Mickey character has its own copyrights for several later incarnations and is also a trademark.
