| The-19th-Sparta 06/27/20 11:08:52 PM #1 | I'm sure there's a lot of people who are familiar with The Big Comfy Couch, but for those who don't know, it's about a clown named Loonette and her seemingly alive doll, Molly. Now Molly is interesting in this case because how is she even a sentient doll in the first place? It's easy to just assume she simply is due to this being a children's show with no logical reason, but I beg to differ and I will explain how. The Big Comfy Couch is a relatively "human" show in the sense that there are mostly human characters, with Molly the Doll and the Couch itself being "alive" things, so why are they given this ability? Loonette practices magic, that's how. You know that little stretch routine on the clock rug she does in every episode? I think she performs that daily as her magical ritual to keep her creations "alive", and that's why a clock rug is used as the primary symbol. This ritual allows her favorite doll to live with her, and gives the Couch that weird ability to also know what she's talking about and is able to provide any item she requests from it's hidden void inside the cushions. My theory continues further, I actually also think that Molly possibly harbors the soul of someone once close to Loonette, and that she put that soul into the Molly doll. My reasoning for this part of the theory is because occasionally we'll see Molly "hearing" some things from under the couch, which are a couple of "living dustbunnies". The issue I face here though is that I don't think they are really there and are actually figments of Molly's imagination, but of course a doll shouldn't be able to have an imagination right? Not in this case. The dust bunnies are often seen wrestling with each other and goofing off, but that represents the internal struggle that Molly faces between the memories of her former human body and the doll body, which is why only Molly is aware of the dust bunnies.
