Really? I feel like its super hamfisted whenever they do a gina saves the day thing

Like was there anything cringier than hiring the kid who "hacked" the station to run their IT?

Idk exactly what you mean by "science" in this context

But for math and CS:

I 'need' math maybe once every few months to get through a white paper so i can build something implementing the concepts. Usually no more than some algebra, but some light calculus every now and then.

Light statistics are pretty much constant. Real simple stuff though - ntiles, std, etc, but i have found excuses to do some modeling a few times

Comp Sci stuff: im not a software dev, so none is needed. But i am almost always working on a python script to automate something analyze a larger dataset... this is usually something i do to be better at my job, but it isnt required.

Idk if thats what you were looking for

Why would they do that?

I can understand why people would be commending a cop for not beating someone to death at this point in time to be honest. It's fucked up, but I can understand it. It's because we expect a cop to just straight up beat and kill someone over a minor thing. We've been conditioned to expect that because that is seemingly what they do. When a cop doesn't do that and actually behaves calmly and the way he should, we're like holy shit, he didn't beat and kill the protester! Amazing! Commendable! Good job!

It's fucked up, as I said, but I understand it.

I dont think thats it

Personally, i dont think i could handle the abuse that guy is getting. I dont think i would start shooting, but i do think i would either leave the situation or get riled up myself

I think there is a dissonance when you demand a huge amount of emotional fortitude from cops (as we should, they have a lot of power and need to show restraint even when its hard) while simultaneously brushing it off as unworthy of any praise at all.

It doesnt excuse cops who dont live up to those standards to acknowledge when someone does a difficult job well.

no one is saying you can't applaud a cop for choosing the profession and treating it respectfully

I never said anyone was saying that. In fact, i didnt really assert anything besides drawing an implicit parallel to other professions that tend to get public recognition

TheVipaGTS posted...
2 things, becoming a teacher or doctor takes far more training and commitment than becoming a cop.

I am surprised that the amount of training is the differentiator for you - lots of professions require more training, but dont generally merit public gratitude.

TheVipaGTS posted...
And this is akin to praising a doctor for performing a checkup. its the bare minimum. You're not going to see articles or videos talking about "I went to the doctor for a check up. he checked my vitals and then i went home. LORD PRAISE HIM!", because that's the bare minimum. When we get to the point where people feel the need to praise that it means we have a bigger problem if the bare minimum is seen as incredible.

I think i disagree with that analogy. Getting berated by a crowd without flinching, while part of the job description, is far from routine even for police. Theres also a threat to his personal well being that does not exist for the doctor.

@TheVipaGTS how do you feel about this analogy? ( and let me preface by acknowledging that it is imperfect, and that i probably faiked to describe the circumstances of the angry crowd without using any biased language)

A cop performing a routine speeding ticket without incident deserves recognition in the same way as a doctor performing a checkup (ie not really any)

A doctor performing surgery on a covid 19 patient deserves recognition in the same way as a police officer maintaining his composure in the face of an aggressive mob that specifically hates police.

this is a good take

but unfortunately there is no possibility of UBI being implemented in any other way. the push for UBI is coming from a neoliberal direction. they'll likely use it as an opportunity to cut other social programs too.

another way of thinking about it: giving $1000 each to four tenants is effectively giving $4000 to their landlord. providing housing (and food, and other essential services) directly would solve this problem in a way that giving people money cannot

You just described how giving people money could cover food and essential services

If anything it will be more effective because people can spend it proportionate to what they need, and with less of it being diverted to administrative costs

We cheaped out on some stuff (dj/cake/clothes) but balled out on food and a good photographer

We were lucky to have our first choice in venue be pretty cheap

iirc it was like $10k or so for the caterer, $3k for photographer, $2k venue, the rest was smaller stuff

Btw: find a caterer that will serve booze that you buy. We did a trip to a nearby state with cheaper booze, served only beer and wine, and got everyone tipsy for <$500.

i think it is unfair to be labeled a racist because i want the woodsy area that i saved up to live in to continue to be woodsy, but i don't think i can have confidence in my preference until i've fully explored & understood the impact on minorities. i could be wrong and change my mind.

I would love to see some trailer parks in town though.
