Haven't gotten into it yet, what's the difficulty climb on that Tower? Seems like Hubert would be the easiest SR to get to +5 depending

There's a big difficulty spike after you get the first Hubert. Gotta fight 2 bosses at once. I assume there's a big jump after each milestone.

I'm gonna need to dig into sub stone element matching a bit because I don't quite understand it, but I think at this stage it might be better to match weapon types if you have 9 of any type for the bonuses regardless of whether they're R or SR?

because by matching 9 swords (the only weapon type I can fill out an entire grid), my team went from...



to...

A workaround you can do is go to the in game codex, look for items, then click the 'found at' option in the training item you wanna get.

i don't think most of what you listed can be disassociated from the main themes, and are mostly used as tools to reinforce ellie's desires. i also don't think the game has anything deep to say. it offers glimpses of humanity and takes it away to show you what the world has lost, but that's a pretty simple story.

also "tribalism" has huge racist connotations as it reduces peoples (mostly indigenous but also black) white states consider primitive into a monolith, and strips all meaning from what a tribe is. it's something you might want to drop from your vocab!

I'm not saying that explains everything, it's not perfect or unimpeachable or anything, but there's a huge difference between reading a summary of this stuff without the feel of playing it (there's great tension to a lot of it, especially later on) and actually going through it, especially with all the small characterization stuff that ND does - the smaller bits of dialogue during gameplay, little tics and expressions in the performances, that sort of thing.

i think a big thing is the source of the leaks and the summaries that were floating about were explicitly bigoted and that seeded a lot of early discussion of the game. they were also misleading in general with the intent to rile up negative sentiments towards the game.

now, i don't think the story is very good, but after completing the game i had to go back and see what exactly that corner of the internet had to say, and the disconnect between what was presented and how it was talked about was huge

How do you feel the game handles the ludonarrative dissonance between the overall theme of the game and the gameplay? That stuff drives me bananas when it's not done well and some of the gifs/clips I've seen of the gameplay look legitimately awesome and fun, which is great in a bubble but seems to run rather contrary to the game's stated mission of making violence seem horrific.

this is a game about revenge and the effects that has on survivors. there's frustratingly little else. you will murder an encampment because they're an obstacle in your way and a willing accomplice, and ellie doesn't feel remorse. it's not exactly a nathan drake situation here, the scores of enemies you kill are built into the story.

weirdly i think the misery-porn aspect of the game was talked up pre-release more than is evidenced in the game. i think this game attempts to make you feel bad about the level of violence you're engaging in, but it's not through gruesome details or dog deaths, it's through the connections your victims have for each other that are told through notes, or given brief highlights when they speak to each other, or one of the big spoilers that people walk around, and i largely found these to be flat.

Why not? It definitely has some Metroidvania elements unless there's some silly gatekeeping reason you don't consider it one.

it's not much of an exploration platformer. it's more in the vein of the Monster World games, which iirc were the explicit inspirations for it.

there's some terrible bugs in co-op. things like noticeable input lag on movement for the person who isn't the host, inability to load levels in Halo 2 if one person has it installed to an SSD while the other has it installed to an HDD. it's amazing we're in 2020 and they're still messing up Halo.

if you're just playing solo you should be fine.

You're getting the prorated bundle discount, minus what you'd save on items you already have. Plenty of games have bundles of DLC like that.

Oh geez. For someone who's only played the first three Ys games, and nothing of anything else, and doesn't want to spend a hundred dollars, is there like only one or two games from here you would absolutely recommend to dip my toe in?

Ys Origin for the best of the old style (well not old old), Celceta for an affordable version of the new style.

it's the summer steam sale so it's a safe guess to assume everything is on sale, unless it just came out (and even then it might have a tiny sale so it's featured on the front page).
