Suspended in the sense of you are unofficially on vacations? Or in the sense of work from home if possible?

I've been working from home for a month now. Which does not mean much, as I never worked on my research centre anyway. I live 560km away from it, so I can happily work on my laptop by the sea or in bars. Well, I used to...

Researching from home is utterly boring an highly unproductive in my case. I hate working at home.

I don't know if the constitution of the US actually especifies this, but in most lawful states, the declaration of state of emergency can suppress rights and liberties, such as public and peaceful assembly. If so, then it does not matter what amendment was violated, as they are not in effect.

I'm completely shocked by this. And here I though Trump was a great human being and the embodiment of everything good and decent in this world. I cannot believe he did such a thing. Luckily, he is certainly the only person in the USA that thinks this way.

Some people are not able to handle crisis with grace and leadership. Anyone can talk big, but when everything starts falling apart and everyone's looking at you for guidance, most people fail. It used to be a requirement for top government positions, but nowadays anything goes. Trump does well to let others handle things, but his image as the commander in chief is still important to calm people and offer guidance. If he can manage to act like a normal, rational human being for once...

The UK is handling this like all European countries. Everyone knows the deal by now, yet everyone has been several steps behind. Contingency plans were made days after the first official cases, state of emergency was called after hundreds of cases and countless transmission chains, boarders were called off after millions of inbound and outbound flights, etc. Feels like every european government was waiting for the things to get really bad before doing what they knew they would have to do eventually. It was just a matter of letting enough people get infected during that time.

I know its a meme to say politicians are clueless, but this time, they were completely oblivious to what was happening right under their noses. A month ago many ministers and european officials were still saying that the virus might not even reach their countries, even after WHO declared this a world level public health crisis. Go figure...

I looked into setting something up on facebook to help those who couldn't or shouldn't go shopping but at least for now our services here are up to the task, you can order from safeway delievered the next day (I just set up an order myself), so nobody needs to shop for others right now at least.

I'll keep an eye on the delivery windows/availability and will try setting something up for volunteers and people who need help to get together.

Till I stop coughing so much, I can't go myself, last thing they need is someone coughing at them when delivering groceries for them lol.
Keep in mind that many older people don't have the technological knowledge required for ordering online. Those are the ones who will attempt to go out themselves out of ignorance or lack of options. And those cases are the ones that require assistance first and foremost.

Is there any point being tested when you don't display symptoms?
A carrier can be asymptomatic for two weeks. So yes, there is. In fact, everyone who has been in contact with someone infected is being tested in most countries. Only when there number of cases skyrockets do they move on to only test people with symptoms, as there are a limited number of tests that can be made due to time requirements and availability of staff and equipment.

Where I live people have been asked to self-quarantine as much as possible and people from appartment buildings have been asking their older neighbours if they need someone to go shop for them. Unfortunately the elder people here have very little schooling and are not worried about the virus whatsoever, so most of them go out and about as if nothing's happening...

I don't get the food race. The same happened in some southern european countries that also lack civility. Not to mention state of alert being decreed and people going to bars all night long as if nothing was happening. Damn stupid morons. I almost can't wait for people to start dying so these idiots realize how many lives that put at risk with their irresponsibility. Its worse than anti-vaxxers...

Still, of all the things to worry about, groceries aren't even on the top of the list...

True. But even international news sources always seem to pick up on the american continent (and not just USA). Personally, 2/3 of the weirdest things I read come from USA and Brazil. And has been even before Trump and Bolsonaro were in seat, so no use blaming them. At this point, I'm getting the feeling that they might be the symptom and not the cause...

I've stayed home for the most part of the day. Managed to go to the coffee shop for a hour and half and get some air before shopping for groceries. The country has declared a state of alertedness, which is not as serious as the state of emergency (which is what should have been declared, but dumb government is always three or four days behind) and I can keep working from home until the cows come home. I work from home most time, so doesn't really impact me much. Advantages of being a researcher.

Plus: I actually have a reason to cuddle with my cats. Might not be so bad after all.

I honestly am not listening to stuff about the Corona Virus. It's probably something that's not as big as people are making it out to be.
Its actually worse than people are making it to be. Many countries that did not take it seriously are seeing the exponential growth of cases and their health systems are collapsing as measures were not taken soon enough. In the end, the countries who took this more seriously will be the ones who end up with less dead people.

Unfortunately, I do not live in one of those countries. A week ago people were making jokes and bragging how wine and spirits would solve everything. Now there's 120+ people infected in four or five active chains and only now schools were closed and places such as restaurants, shopping malls, bars, etc, began cancelling events and adopting restrictions to the number of people allowed. Boarders are still open, flights are still coming and going as usual...

The irony is: we got warning and everyone from scientists to medics alerted to the lack of pre-emptive measures. No one really cared, including officials. So I do feel we deserve this as a country. You reap what you sow...

I live in a small coastal village with a population of 3000 people, give or take. Its not remote by any means, with most people working in the nearby cities and being 15 miles form the airport. Its easier to handle, but I'm sure people will stress out when a nearby case gets reported or something like that.

I still go to the coffee shop to work on my laptop, but I've been washing my hands pretty much whenever I touch anyone or anything. Might end up staying home next week... I'll go for supplies tomorrow and stock up on what I can manage.

Have a feeling we'll be in Italy's place in a couple of weeks...
