I don't give a shit about ideology, I just think it's incredible that we accurately said that averagejoel denies the holodomor genocide and blames things like the weather and the farmers instead, and we were told that wasn't true...

and it was all true, but somehow because Joel told scar that it was bad even though it was not a genocide and also Churchill is bad too there's ambiguity over all those posts denying Stalin did anything or that the holodomor had anything to do with policy

Like wtf? When have I ever defended Churchill? Most of what I know about him doesn't make him seem worth defending.

W/e, I don't really care what Joel thinks as long as we've cleared the air over what he's said
Ok let me clarify. I took RebelElite's initial post about it to mean something more along the lines of "denies it happened", especially since he used the phrase "conspiracy theory" about something that is actually contested in academia. Whereas the way I understand it is simply that he thinks the Holodomor very much happened but it wasn't a genocide.

Not sure what you're asking. Why what? I agree it doesn't excuse his actions. Stalin was pretty brutal regardless. My point is that so were the leaders of the west, yet they are still regarded as heroes. I think that sucks, because then it feels like Stalin gets criticism not because he was bad but because he was bad on the wrong side.

It's a good question. I'll remember to ask him if he thinks the Bengal famine is a genocide. I don't really know his opinions on Stalin in general but you know it's possible to think he was bad and to think the Holodomor wasn't a genocide at the same time right

What was his more detailed explanation
Again it's a little weird to have this conversation without him but essentially it was something like this:

Of course the actual Holodomor happened, what is contested is whether it should be classified as genocide, since for example kulaks would burn their own land rather than hand over crops, and a bunch of other circumstances.
Bottom line however is that Stalin was complicit and responsible, no matter if it's technically genocide or not.

A personal reflection is that it's a very similar situation to the Bengal famine of '43 and yet people are not so happy to condemn Churchill. I'm less interested in whether they're classified as genocides and more interested in consistency.

I don't know why people are assuming there's no work involved in landlording.

Repairs, maintenance, tax prep, showings, monthly payments (collection and payment), lease agreement preparation, many of them even arrange crap like lawncare. It's not a full-time thing for one property but some of these guys manage a ton of properties. That's why there's a dang real estate office that's staffed 40+ hours a week.
And that labor should be fairly compensated naturally. If 100% of "rent" went towards actual maintenance of the building then
1. It would not be called rent
2. They would not be called landlords
3. People living there wouldn't have a problem with them

Seriously how hard is it to understand? There's a fundamental difference between making money from doing work, and making money from owning stuff. The objection against landlords is that they make money from owning stuff. That's why they're called leeches. That's why people don't like them. That's the central issue. Well that and the fact that they wield power over others just because they own stuff. No one thinks someone who does repairs or mows the lawn shouldn't get paid.

The main objection against landlords isn't that they're rich, wtf. It doesn't matter if they're millionaires or barely scraping by.

The objection is that they're exploiting a basic human need for profit. They do no work, they take money from other people who do work. Very irrelevant how their living situation is, the point is that they feel entitled to other people's money just because they own stuff

I see. Sure that C2 description seems like it fits, but I'm still hesitant if I would call that fluency. But I suppose it also depends on the context.

No, I haven't really been reading anything in French for a long time now. I suppose I kind of gave up a little bit on that language. I've been picking up some Portuguese though and am planning to at some point figure out Polish, since my gf's family is from there.

About stormaktstiden... are you looking for history books or fiction? I'm not very well versed, maybe someone like @ROBANN_88 knows more (for some reason I have him pegged as a history buff). Sure, if you break it down far enough the definitions of fluency can seem a bit arbitrary. But I definitely think there are aspects of a language that you don't really pick up until you really immerse yourself for a long time. And it gets really obvious when I visit a place where they speak English natively because there's this kind of ease native speakers have that I don't yet. It's really hard to explain.

I'm not really sure what those CEFR levels are, though. Your Swedish is really good for not having spoken it for ten years though! By comparison, my French that I haven't used for ten years is absolute dog shit at this point lol

I think we probably have different conditions for fluency. To me fluency would include a lot more. Like even though I can make myself understood perfectly fine, I'm lacking in a number of areas I'd almost only be able to develop if I lived in an English speaking country for a long time. Such as, better understand of dialects, local figures of speech/idioms etc, a ton of names for like flora and fauna. So for me fluency is a level above, say, proficiency, which would be a level of speaking where I still have a large vocabulary and a working understanding of the grammar.
