To borrow a phrase from RedLetterMedia, I suspect they threw in that car-wash scene and two girls on Luke's arm to establish a clear case of the notgays.

I agree with this, but I kind of felt like Dragline's reaction to the car wash girl was so intenseover-the-top that it almost felt like the character was trying to prove to everyone he wasn't gay. I wouldn't have thought much of it if he didn't then go on to spend most of rest the film obsessing over "his boy" Luke. I doubt that's what they were going for and it doesn't really matter much for the story, just something mildly interesting.

Cool Hand Luke (actually serious write-up)

Good movie. The prison atmosphere is really well done. The Jesus parallels with Luke are interesting, but I'm not entirely sure what the story supposed to mean in the end. Obviously Luke is a kind of martyr, and I think the police represent "normal society" in general? That makes sense to me, but there are probably some other good interpretations.

Also, the egg eating scene was really gross and hard for me to watch.

Perfect Blue

It's been years since the last time I watched Perfect Blue, but this was as creepy as I remembered. The increasing inability to tell what exactly is "real" as the film goes on really gets to me. Good critique of celebrity culture too. (And surprisingly more relevant today thanks to the rise of the Internet. It's funny how the web is actually a plot point.).

Did the Gauntlet Crew ever do Memories in one of the anime rankings? Kon directed the first segment in that one (and it's the only thing he directed you didn't mention).

I really need to start doing write-ups sooner. I keep watching movies and then forgetting that I haven't posted anything yet.

The Love Witch

I feel like I'd appreciate this movie more if I had any familiarity with the kind of stuff it's imitating. It's definitely going for a very specific style/aesthetic from an older era of movies, and the themes seem to be a response to that era as well. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about those movies to really "get" it. So what I'm left with is a movie with amazing design and a great lead character, but also seems like it's trying for a "so-bad-it's-good" feel (which isn't something I care much for). It's not a bad movie, it's just very much not for me.

Also, I'm going to have to agree with the people saying the Renaissance fair scene was pretty weak. It works thematically, but it just feels like it goes on way too long.

When Marnie Was There

What I love about this movie is how well Anna's feelings of not fitting in anywhere are portrayed. Maybe it's because I'm an introvert, but I found her problems incredibly relatable. That said, I've never found the mystery of who/what Marnie is very interesting. In fairness, a big reason for that is because I was spoiled about the answer before the movie even came out in Japan, but even accounting for that I just don't find most of Marnie's story very interesting. She's obviously a ghost and her backstory is fairly generic, the only real question is why she wants to be friends with Anna. It all fits together well with the reveal at the end (which is great), but I feel like they could have done a better job getting there.

Is it bad in general, or a bad adaptation? I know it's the Ghibli black sheep but having read the novels and liking each one less than the one before it, which was a solid dropoff because I really enjoyed the first novel, I'm not sure if a bad adaptation might not be an improvement to me.

I haven't read the Earthsea novels, but considering Ghibli's track record with adaptations I assume it's not particularly faithful to the books. But that's not really the issue, it's just an incredibly boring and not well-made movie in general.

In fairness, Ghibli hasn't made something like Cars 2. That probably helps a lot.

And by that, I mean I wish Earthsea had been as good as Cars 2. But it's bad in different ways that aren't as obvious before watching, so it "helps" in that most people are more willing to try it.

I don't really have much to say about this one. The story is a bit formulaic and predictable, but it's executed well enough that it's not a problem. I was definitely surprised by how funny it was. That's partially because I was expecting a more serious movie, but even accounting for that it's a legitimately good comedy.

Summed up very briefly: Money makes greedy people really stupid, with entertaining results. Seriously, there are so many times where someone could have stopped things from getting worse, but chose not to because money. And in the end the whole scheme just falls apart and everyone loses. The basic idea is simple enough, but it's a perfect fit for the Coen brothers and the end result is great.

Yes, and Biden had an even bigger increase in votes compared to Obama. Trump is more popular with conservatives than any other Republican, but the increased turnout for his opponents more than cancels that out among the general population.
