The game does a poor job at explaining who Sephiroth is, but by the end of the game you get some context at least. Its a part 1 of a full game so his story should be fully revealed in later parts. In the original FF7 it took a while before Sephiroth was explained too. Cloud flashbacks and visions also happens in the original and is explained later on. The environments and hidden lore are not as good but the game play, weapons, spells, pvp, and arguably bosses are much better. You feel like a boss in PVE as a magic user. Enemies disappear after killing them a certain amount of times which can either up the difficulty depending on your skill or let you explore more peacefully.
