Just look at the recent GME fiasco. If you didnt actually have a sizable amount of money, you couldnt really profit that much even if you caught on early.

the appropriate response to the GME fiasco was to let the people setting their money on fire to burn hedge funds do so and not join in.

the volatility there is extreme. you can't look at a one day return and say "what a great idea!" because you're never going to have good timing.

As a result of the belief among the pro investor crowd that GameStop was, essentially, doomed, they began shorting the stock -- essentially betting on it to fail. This happens all the time to a variety of stocks with very little fanfare. It is the way of the modern stock market.

that wasn't why they were shorting it, they were shorting it because its own earnings reports gave guidance that they would continue to lose money

the market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent

but the 'you' here doesn't refer to investment banks it refers to retail

financial paper costs are still low as hell so the cost for shorts to simply wait it out is trivial. the only professional investors actually at risk are the ones selling calls and their trading window tends to be fractions of a second

The problem is if we bump it to 15 is the price of everything going to double from hyper-inflation?

no, because inflation is a result of changes to the money supply and lending from central banks--not to the cost of labor. so now you can rest easy because someone told you that the answer to your question was no! what's that, you're still worried, because someone else told you the answer to your question was yes?

anyone who tries to tell you that raising the minimum wage definitively causes inflation is lying.

someone else gaining wealth is not devaluing your own because in the modern market economy, someone else is always gaining wealth faster than you, and either in (population) numbers or wealth quantity great enough to be of equal comparative consequence. as i can tell you've already stopped reading my post i'll just quickly note that that consequence value is zero.

and since folks are posting random youtube nonsense i'll just go ahead and post sourced research from the bureau of labor which none of you will read except balrog0 because he probably has to cite it for his job already anyway.

inflation is cyclical and tends not to link up very well with the growth of labor costs. the reason for this is that most shit you're buying is not tied to the cost of domestic labor, but of global labor. US companies' costs might be labor-driven, but US companies sell their products around the globe.

https://www.bls.gov/opub/mlr/cwc/the-relationship-between-labor-costs-and-inflation-a-cyclical-viewpoint.pdf

the folks who are concerned about unemployment rates have a better argument, but one would think they'd have been saying in the pre-covid era--when it was at an all time low--"hey, this would be a great time to raise the minimum wage!" and yet, when we had those conditions, crickets. as we recover from COVID we will bounce back and see unemployment numbers again drop to low levels. and it is for that environment that folks pushing for higher minimum wages are preparing.

I'm sure 1000s making 8 to 15 will be enthused their rate is now the same as people who were making less. Or that their rates won't be raising proportional to those making $7.

People may not want to hear this, but not everyone who is already making 8+ is rolling around in money either and get completely fucked over in this.

You have some here who indirectly lump someone already making 8 or whatever struggle middle class hourly wages (which yes be already 15+) as well, to the salaries of Bezos or Bill Gates.

Anyone making any amount over minimum wage up to struggling middle class gets fucked over. Including those in the 8 to 15 range. They were making over min wage, and now they're not in this min wage increase. And I'm sure they worked hard to get pass the min.

itp: "it's not about whether i make more, it's about whether someone else makes less than me so i know that i'm better than they are"

Chapter 1 they're pretty much aligned
Chapter 2, they're both protecting Ovelia and don't want anyone else to be "another Teta"
Chapter 3 Ramza is trying to make the Hotuken back down (just like Delita)
Chapter 4 they're both gonna save the goddamn world

chapter 1 was before the murder that divided them, but it's clear in chapter 2 that delita uses ovelia as a pawn, and in chapter 3 he's trying to cause the war not stop it. chapter 4 he's consolidating power in the wake of ramza's destruction of his enemies.

ramza's story is one of self sacrifice for what is right. delita's is one of doing whatever is necessary to ensure personal advancement. that 'whatever is necessary' frequently involved assisting ramza had more to do with the fact that ramza was so good at killing the people delita needed to kill than any shared vision or goals.

they were absolutely rivals--much of the story was ramza fighting delita's masters openly while delita served them openly (and plotted their downfall in secret). had stopping altima not resulted in the cataclysmic ending that it did, i cannot imagine ramza simply standing by and allowing delita to marry ovelia, clearly against her will.

they're childhood friends from deeply different backgrounds, who viewed one another as brothers in naive ignorance of their world--friends whose love for one another was shattered by the world they live in, and whose responses to emotional tragedy were polar opposites not due to some character flaw but circumstances neither ever could control

ultimately landing them on opposite sides of a conflict way bigger than either of them for completely understandable reasons

yes they're rivals, and delita is probably the most sympathetic villain in the series

Over the years, the wage level has been lifted to reflect inflation and the rising cost of living. But successive congresses had differing ideas about what a minimum wage should do. Inaction led to the minimum wage often failing to keep pace with inflation, as shown below.
