Good lord is that how we treat potential suicide victims, detaining them and charging them out the ass? Some morale booster. But I'm glad you hesitated and can at least confide in us in some way.

I've heard VRchat can be pretty effective place for therapy or just talking shit out, whatever you wanna call it. I've never done VR but I imagine it's got potential to be a bit more genuine than some hotline worker on an hourly wage

Gotta vote for Killing of a Sacred Deer, one I've been meaning to watch for a while. I'll get to In Bruges later today.

As for consistently funny movies I think plenty are never transcendentally hilarious but consistently hit their mark. Raising Arizona is solidly funny all the way through. Black Dynamite, Austin Powers, Airplane!, and Loaded Weapon 1 are pitch-perfect spoofs, and I think the Adam West Batman gets funnier with every new gritty iteration of the character. Dr. Strangelove and The Apartment have consistently effective black comedy but aren't necessarily laugh-out-loud funny. Swiss Army Man is just a giant fart joke but it had me laughing most of the time (which maybe says more about me but damnit it was a well-executed fart joke)

The unfunniest comedy that comes to mind is Police Academy and it blows my mind they made seven of those sons of bitches. People were just gobbling that shit up in the 80's!

Sound of Metal

I have never actually seen The Sound of Music so I don't know if there are supposed to be any references but I'm pretty sure the guy did spin around in the grass once

From the first scene I figured this would be Whiplash for metal, turns out it's a cautionary tale about earplugs and hearing aids. I don't think I saw this guy using earplugs at all, even the Whiplash kid had them! And then of course the ironic twist, the sound of metal is the hearing aids which apparently make the world sound like a robot factory. I know the doctor halfheartedly explained that the implant wasn't so perfect early on and Ruben didn't want to hear it (ba dum ch) but you'd think the deaf community leader would have been even more direct about how disappointing the results are considering he was trying to dissuade Ruben from the procedure. It's like he forgot the strongest argument against them is that they fucking suck.

I couldn't tell what the movie was really saying about religion. The deaf community is associated with the christian church early on but the leader teaches what seems like more of a buddhist nirvana lesson. Ruben makes clear that he wants nothing to do with organized religion, and then at the end what finally prompts his acceptance of stillness is the awful clanging of the church's metal bell through metal ears, the mocking crash cymbal of institutional worship splintered by instruments of institutional transhumanist grifting from which the only salvation is sweet silence

I didn't have problems with the pacing but I can see how it would have been nice to show more of a struggle to integrate and learn sign language, there's a not-quite-montage where he does the alphabet a couple times and makes a solid joke at dinner and all the sudden he's the most popular guy. But I think the movie hit all its emotional beats well and in that sense I liked that it shifted into a genuine feel-good mode instead of languishing in the agony of deafness for too long. Pairing him with the kids early worked well since their cheery attitudes could immediately humble the specific despair of being youthfully deaf. Riz Ahmed did a good job showing the character changes. Lots of good feels from the community aspect

Overall would not want to lose hearing and I hope those implants are at least forward-compatible 7/10

Bacchus is a very popular energy drink in small glass bottles but there's also a darker connotation involving elderly prostitutes in South Korea.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacchus_Ladies
https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-27189951

I think you may be on to something with this - if you read down the article a little there's a paragraph that potentially ties it right back to acupuncture - "Inside those bags the Bacchus Ladies carry is the source of a hidden epidemic: a special injection supposed to help older men achieve erections - delivered directly into the vein. Dr Lee confirms that the needles aren't disposed of afterwards, but used again - 10 or 20 times."

I've seen The Host, Snowpiercer, and Parasite before but this was my first viewing of Mother. 9/10!

I think Hitchcock would be impressed, this is a tight noir with well-executed tonal variety and substance. Unreliable protagonists keep us guessing and the twists never feel cheap. Joon-Ho's sense of dark humor always shines in perfectly placed moments. It doesn't hurt that the orchestral score was taking cues from Bernard Hermann's style at times!

I like how the real motive traces back to Momma's orders - retaliate against anyone who insults you. Although I guess it's technically involuntary manslaughter and not murder so idk if 'motive' is the right term. And that whole reveal with the guy being indecisive with the phone was great, rode the line of creepy and funny but shows he *almost* consciously turned himself in (and instead leaves her on the roof to be found). It was a very Bojack Horseman moment.

One common thread between the Bong Joon-Ho movies I've seen is he likes the tension of someone having to sneak out of a room without waking someone else up. In Host it's the little girl and the monster, in this it comes after the closet voyeurism (another noir trope) with the young couple. In Parasite this goes even further with an entire family sneaking out from under a coffee table while the rich sleep on the couch. It's an effective formula.

Someone else said it but the bookend shots are fantastic, it really ties it together and leaves you on a high note. I was reminded of the danse macabre scene that concludes The Seventh Seal, although I kinda doubt it was referencing that intentionally. It just looked similar with the dancers silhouetted. And it was just shot with such style, great little moment of passion to cap it off.

There's almost no reason to buy a metronome, you can just google one! (some people do swear by the visual indication of the pendulum but at the early stages of learning piano you'll probably benefit more from looking at your hands)

But keeping count is important in any case, at first it will seem unnatural and probably force you to think/play slowly but after a while it becomes second nature
