Played exactly one best of 3 sultai control match last night to practice and it took an hour.

I honestly think Im both not going to try to make top 1200 if I slip or actually practice for it, because I would probably drive myself crazy trying to find enough time.

I don't bother too much with Standard these days, but it seems like Sultai is still probably the "best" deck right now.

Sultai is probably the deck I've played most in Best of 1 (And by played most, I mean I've played the deck in probably 20 games total)

But its also probably a harder deck to pilot? Trying to weigh the pros and cons of playing a deck I want to play versus just jamming mono red or something

I still don't know much about Strixhaven limited, but I felt Broken Wings was able to be maindecked in both Zendikar Rising and Kaldheim.

3 in the maindeck is...quite suspect though I would think.

Its worse in this format. You can get obliterated by decks that never play a flier too easily

So should I value Learn and Lessons highly tonight over removal? This set makes removal seem pointless outside of Bury in Books.

I do think removal is worse than usual in this set, though the red removal is still good.

I think the biggest suggestion I can give is this set is the most cube like set in a decade. The BEST decks are going to look nearly constructed

If you are silverquill you need to go balls to the wall 4X tragic poet aggro. If you are witherbloom you need to basically be a combo deck. If you are quandrix you should be making multiple 8/8 fractals.

Prismari Tempo is my favorite deck because you can win without doing something stupid because you lock down the ground with the hybrid 3/3s and fly over the top burning everything that can block you.

in 4 hours I decayed 14 spots

On that pace I would decay to mid 1000's by seasons end, but that will probably pick up as we get closer.

I'll probably take a break for a few days and then start playing again if it looks close

I don't know this format very well, being as I have never played a game, but are those really the contenders over Frost Trickster? I guess magecraft is just that good?

It's less mage craft, and more that learn is an absurd mechanic. I think if learn cards were just called "Combat trick command" and had all the options written out people would realize how good it is.

I have both used arcane subtraction to pull an environmental sciences to hit my 5th land for a pivotal pigment storm, and cycled it to get a fractal summoning to slam a 6/6 the next turn.

Staple that on to you are playing a tempo deck so the opponent can't just not block and it's a 2 for 1 that gives you both tempo and card advantage at the same time

Bury in books is great because of mage craft, and it's great targeting crappy creatures because it forces your opponent's to redraw them and it's great targeting huge fractal tokens because it just kills them

Hooray

Protip: I think Prismari Tempo is the best draft deck in the format. Its not so much better than other decks that its like RW Cycling from Ikoria, but it is so good both at playing the short game and the long game

I'm getting to the point were I think Arcane Subtraction might be the best blue common over bury in books

My biggest train wreck of a draft was when my first 4 picks were something like closing statement, flunk, flunk, Lash of malice

And I was feeling great because in a normal draft set 4 straight solid removal spells would be awesome.

Deck did not come together at all. Turns out with so many 2 for 1s due to learn cards removal is just not as good this set. It's still fine when paired with pressure, but an all black removal control deck can not win in this format.

And 7-1 with this spicy 4x Arrogant poet deck.

I think Silverquill wasn't open but the other silverquill drafters weren't taking the good aggressive cards so I ended up short on playables which made me fairly unhappily play cards like duress

7-2 with that lorehold deck. I P2P1 a crackle with power

which....

actually kind of underperformed.

Sure it was good, and I won 2 games hitting the opponent for 10 out of nowhere with it, but I actually cast it in both games I lost as a 5 mana kill spell or an 8 mana kill 2 spell that didnt matter because I was dead anyways.

I think the real problem with it is if my opponent was at 10 or less and I had 8 mana the game was pretty much already over. A 5 mana 5/5 probably would have also been enough to push me over the edge as at that point I was both the beat down and the control. I think the card is still good, but I went from thinking it was an A level Bomb to just a B level solid red card.

Returned past caller on the other hand was consistently excellent when I casted it, and using it as a gravedigger for my already dead returned past callers was gross. Have to be in a controlling shell with enough removal but even turns as simple as 7 mana get back a shock, kill your x/2 were awesome.

Also the 3 mana 3 damage learn card is probably a bomb. Pick up a summoning and its a build your own flame tongue kavu

I actually think the mystical archive cards are really cool. Because of mage craft the boring ones like defiant strike and opt are way better than normal, and most of the rares and mythical are too situational to be insane. I first picked a natural order, than realized it really wasnt that great unless I got multiple book wurms

LSV streamed a quandrix ramp deck that won with a splashed approach of the second sun and it was incredible to watch.

We may occasionally do associated Secret Lair products related to the main release, like the Secret Lair Godzilla lands when Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths came out. There will also be the occasional standalone product like The Walking Dead, but the intention is to typically make Universes Beyond as available as any other Magic product.

That's not that bad. The problem with the walking dead wasn't that it was the walking dead, it's that they were selling singles. I'm cool with full on themed magic products

Hell, as long as they aren't selling OP singles I don't have an issue with it. Arabian Nights was the first expansion ever and it's pretty similar to making a set based on lord of the rings
