Good legendary rate is probably closer to at least 75%, at this point? My personal evaluation is 100%
OK, even if we evaluate that 100% of legendaries are good and worth crafting your initial assesssment was still way way off.

If random epics are always worth 400 dust, and random legendaries are always worth 1600 dust, then the average dust value of a pack is 225.5 dust. And if we further assume as you suggest that 6 releases per year won't cause any problems for getting all the rares....

This means 7.1 packs are equivalent to one random legendary, and 1.77 packs are equivalent to one random epic.

Which means 1 epic and 1 legendary are equivalent to 887 gold.

So...sure, 126 more gold if we feel that every random epic and every random legendary is a card so good that we would craft it anyway if we didn't get it on the rewards track. But still way, way, way less than your claim that 1 epic + 1 legendary = 2000 gold. There is no way to mathematically justify 2000; 887 gold is about the highest you can reasonably justify. (Outside of turbo whales who own every epic in the set, but don't own every legendary).

Ignoring the first four levels because we got those for free in the old system

It was typically a bit more than that. Launch quests log in bonuses were typically 1 legendary, 3 new set packs, 4 old set packs. So all of that should be subtracted.

(While they did say new events would be happening in the future, launch of a new set is normally considered an "event", and it wasn't this time).

dowolf posted...
2) Two tavern tickets (Total value: 300 gold)

I mean, I'm sitting on about 9 tavern tickets right now. I play arena very occasionally, but not faster than Blizzard gives me tickets. So these don't do a ton for me. Bear in mind they used to give these out with events, which is how I got so many, so this isn't really new added value either.

dowolf posted...
3) 7 packs, two of which are Madness packs. The lowest possible value we can reasonably give the packs is their minimum dust value, 40, so they are worth at minimum 280 gold. (You could very easily argue they're worth more.)

Due to the existence of the mini-set, the Madness packs are effectively 100 gold each because you should be saving them for the mini-set in two months (means you don't need to spend 100 gold at that time).

Minimum value of a pack...it depends. If the player base ends up super gold-starved, to the point where they're struggling to get enough gold to both get all the rares in the January mini-set and get all the rares in the March rotation set, the net value of a pack could be as low as 50 gold (which is to say 100 dust is worth about 48 gold in this scenario). Realistically, I trust that Blizzard will do enough events to give people their rares from the new sets, meaning that people will just be looking for epics and legendaries with extra gold, so old packs (and by old I mean year of the dragon) are probably worth 60. Slightly less old packs (like scholomance and ashes of outlands) IDK, maybe 80? Depends so much how many cards you crafted from Ashes of Outland.

That said, as mentioned above we do need to subtract the extra old packs that were usually given away when a new set launched, so we're left with like 2 Darkmoon packs and 1 old set pack for around 280. Funnily enough the number doesn't actually change here.

dowolf posted...
If you, say, value the legendary at 1600 gold and the epic at 400 (I do!)

Nope, nope, nope, nope. This is the biggest issue I have with your calculation.

2000 gold gets you 20 packs, which gets you (on average) 1 legendary, 4 epics, and 1236 dust assuming you dust all the commons, rares, and golden cards. Just...blatantly more stuff.

Valuing 1 random epic and 1 random legendary at 2000 gold is...just bad math.

So...what is the right value?

If we assume 50% of random legendaries are good and worth crafting, and the other 50% are bad and only worth 400 dust, this means the average value of a random legendary is 1000 dust. Same thing for epics, making the average value 250 dust. But then this also ups the value of a pack. If you dust everything in a pack it's worth 102.7 dust, but if 50% of the epics and legendaries from packs are cards you would consider crafting, and the other 50% are dust fodder, this ups the dust value of a pack to 164.1.

Under normal circumstances this makes the value of a random legendary about 600 gold, and the value of a random epic about 150 gold.

HOWEVER, we're heading into a bit of a gold crunch, where getting all the rares for the upcoming mini-set is going to syphon some gold from nearly all players. This means we also need to throw rares into the equation--changing the assumption to assuming that we don't dust all rares, only dust 50% of rares and would have crafted the rest ups the value of rares in packs to 60 dust, which makes the value of a pack go up to 207.1 Which makes the approximate gold value of a loose legendary 480 gold and the approximate value of a loose epic 120 gold.

So...750 gold for the legendary+epic if there's no rare gold crunch, 600 gold for the legendary+epic if there is a rare gold crunch.

I think it's a matter of opinion whether you use 750 or 600 here. I'm feeling nervous about the added cost of the mini-set so I'm leaning towards using 600, but we're talking a difference of 150 at the end of the day.

dowolf posted... So, with the maximum pessimistic assumptions, we're at 6630 total value, putting us modestly ahead

For me, net value is looking like 6430-6580 depending on my level of pesimism (attributing gold value to the non-gold rewards that were not typically given out to us). Similar total rewards to the old system, just some of it is in the form of packs and cards.

The only caveat to this is, of course, that I'm assuming the stated 400XP/hour in Ranked is accurate... and it is! Here, have some data: https://www.reddit.com/r/hearthstone/comments/jw7zw4/xp_per_hour_calculations_win1xp7s_loss1xp10s/ There's even some arguing that 400XP/hour undercounts the actual gains!

The thing I don't like, cause I do a lot of memeing in casual, is that it feels like casual gets significantly less XP than ranked. For instance, I won three games in a row casual with Wild Even Nzoth Reno Rogue. Not exactly a hyper aggro deck, though certainly can do some burst damage (does have oil and eviscerate in the deck). I recorded my xp before and after, I gained....93 XP (roughly equivalent to 3 gold; would have gotten 10 gold in the old system). Either that or my average game length is 4 minutes, which would mean I'm getting about half as much gold as the old system.

Also, not a great change for wild, which tends to have shorter games than standard no matter what you're playing.

Either way, as someone who likes wild, likes casual, and often uses aggro decks to climb back to diamond 5 in standard cause it's a much longer climb than climbing back to rank 5 under the old system, I am definitely losing out with this change. I get that it helps out people who needed some help (dedicated control standard players and battlegrounds players) but for me pretty sure it's going to be substantially negative.

C'Thun does a few things that are at least a bit interesting. It's like a mini Archivist Elysiana if we ever get people worried about control mirrors. (Right now control decks can't beat Tiktakus, though). All the cards it adds to your deck are on average better than Archivist Elysiana cards too.

And it creates a bunch of 5 mana spells, when there's some noteworthy cards that activate off of 5 mana spells like Groundskeeper, Garden Gnome, Anubisath Defender. Don't even need to play the spells for some of those; just have em in hand, which is good cause you're usually not in a rush to play these. Also the majority of corrupt cards are 4 mana or less, so 5 mana spells are decent corrupt activators.

Also, if I'm not mistaken since they are added to your deck at start of game, that means none of them will be in your opening mulligan, or be one of the cards you get back from your mulligan. This is actually kind-of important; normally 5 mana cards are bad because you don't want to draw them on turn 1, 2, 3, or 4. You're much less likely to draw these on early turns, which is a substantial advantage over other 5 mana cards with the same text. Like...C'Thun assassinate is much better than vanilla assassinate, just because you can't get it in your opening mulligan. If you draw it later in the game that's fine, you actually have the mana to cast it. The 10 mana C'Thun also never shows up in your mulligan, so no concerns there either.

The meta kind-of needs to chill out a little before an Archivist Elysiana style card will do much, though.

Ehh...comparing hearthstone mill to magic mill doesn't really work.

Magic mill is awful, because games do not go to fatigue basically ever. (Basically because Magic has 60 card decks, and Hearthstone has 30 card decks. In Limited Magic with 40 card decks, mill is actually good, and 40 is still a lot more than 30). Also, lots of magic cards do things when in the graveyard so often you just end up helping your opponent.

By contrast, Hearthstone mill is pretty good, because quite a few control mirrors will actually go to fatigue. Also, Hearthstone you can only run 1 copy of legendaries (not 4 like magic) so sometimes milling a single card can make it impossible to pull off a combo. Like...Gnomesferatu was actually a decent card in Hearthstone because of getting players 1 card closer to fatigue. I can't imagine a magic-equivalent version of Gnomesferatu that would actually be constructed-worthy.

Very much enjoying Tonk hunter. (To the point that I actually crafted Jewel of N'Zoth).

Probably not actually a good deck, or at least the Tonks should probably be cut, but I liked it enough that I crafted the second Jewel of N'Zoth. I think Jewel is probably just solid on its own--8 mana for summon 2x Khartut Defender is actually a solid play.

I've tried out both the deck recipe from Blizzard, as well as the VS hybrid secret version. If you are going to run tonks, I think the broomsticks in the Blizzard deck recipe are correct, but the VS is a stronger list overall so I need to figure out what to cut from that for broomsticks.

Tried to climb with the same deck as the last two seasons--went 0-3 with aggro DH; just a bad matchup against lifegain soul DH.

Went on VS and looked up the decks with supposedly good matchups against soul DH--looks like pure paladin. I'm missing two legendaries (Alura and Murgur Mugurgle) so I replaced both of them with Shotbot, and yeah, the deck went on a pretty good winstreak from Bronze to Platinum (a few losses at the start while I got used to the deck).

Honestly, currently the most effective way to change things with how messed up the US system is seems to be primaries.

Like...AOC is pretty far from a party-line democrat, but she got in by primarying a party-line democrat. Currently the Bernie wing of the democratic party and the classical democrats feel like two different parties TBH.

Similarly some of the candidates for president from the Libertarian party have been former Republican governors; same deal.

The...cast members?

The cast members who felt that some of the writing for their own characters was a bit one-dimensional and stereotypical, who had a chat with the producers, and the producers agreed to make the writing changes suggested?

That's...not a race to the bottom.

If a white actor was like "I don't think my character is written very well, and I'd like to suggest some changes if the writers agree", that would be like...a normal day in Hollywood. Actors ad-lib, and make small adjustments to their characters all the time.

It's really not that big of a deal for black actresses to do the same thing.

doxxing is making private information public. publishing information that's already public isn't doxxing.
It...can be, actually, if you make the information considerably more accessible.

Like...what happened a lot during gamergate was that there would be prominent women in the game industry, their names would be publicly known, and people would use that with white pages lookups, disambiguate the white page lookups, comb through public records for any name changes, figure out when they were born, what high school they went to etc, and then publish all their findings in a text dump. Occasionally they would get things wrong, the phonebook would have multiple people with the same last name, and they'd list the address of the wrong person.

Anyway, yeah, most people filed that under doxxing, even though "phone books are public information", and "name change records are public information" -- yeah, they are but it takes quite a bit of work to track people down that way, so it's still a significant invasion of privacy to post the address of a single individual even if every step of the way you used public information.

(I'm not sure how I feel yet about a "trump donors near you" website on the other hand--the thing that's usually invasive about doxxing is that it singles out one person who already has a mob angry against them--when it's thousands of people, is it still doxxing? No one person is being singled out, so no one person is feeling like their life is in danger, but on the other hand it is making the information easier to find).

Giuliani was the guy who called in FBI favours to get another computer looked at for Hillary's emails in the last week of the election in 2016. Those turned out to be nothing, there wasn't a single new email on the "extra server" they found, but Giuliani engineered it to get Hillary's emails back into the news cycle.

Giuliani was tied up in the Ukraine stuff, hired Lev Parnas, went to the Ukraine when they were trying to strongarm the Ukranian president. Once again, trying to engineer a news story.

He is an engineer of fake news, he's been multiple times the driver of fake news stories.

The news story having its sole source be him immediately makes me think it's fake.

It would be like if Michael Avenatti showed up with an October surprise about Donald Trump. I would be fairly suspicious just because it came from Avenatti. (Thankfully I think Avenatti is in jail right now, so hopefully we won't need to deal with his BS this election cycle).

Also, this pandemic was caused by the interconnectedness of modern society (which I'm not arguing is a bad thing, more that it just comes with consequences), so the idea of imagining an alternate reality without it is kind of insulting. Things will not magically be back to normal afterwards, since that normal is what caused the pandemic in the first place.
I mean, sure, but worth noting the interconnectedness leading to disease has been going on for a long time.

The Black Plague in Europe was most likely brought from global trade routes from China.

After Spain made first contact in the Americas, an estimated 90% of the indigenous population died of disease. In fact, so many people died that year that it was theorized to have caused global cooling:

https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-47063973

I'm not sure how far back you would need to go to be in a pre-global trade era of the world, but...probably really far back.

But uhh...none of that applies to Trump retweeting QAnon. If Trump retweeted a video where TYT got really heated, everyone would assume that he wasn't endorsing TYT and instead making fun of how angry they were. But QAnon supports him, so Trump retweeting QAnon just looks like endorsement.

That is literally a conspiracy theory.
Eh.

She's most likely cancelling her events because she's worried she might have COVID, and is presumably waiting for her test results.

I think "Kamala might have COVID" is a reasonable thing to say that is not really in the realm of conspiracy theory. There's no coverup or anything, she probably doesn't know herself yet.

Conspiracies involve a large number of people conspiring to keep the truth from the people. Conspiracies are stuff like this:

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/big-tobacco-kept-cancer-risk-in-cigarettes-secret-study/

Where the public is lied to by a significant authority figure over a long period of time. Conspiracy theories are theories that assume a conspiracy.

There's just no conspiracy about "Kamala Harris cancelled her schedule cause she thinks she might have COVID".

Conspiracy would be like "Kamala Harris secretly already tested positive for COVID, but isn't going to tell us the test result".

Nerfs coming to mage next week

Evocation goes to 2 mana

Solarian Prime goes to 9 mana.

Looking forward to people not generating extra evocations off of wandmakers.

Solarian Prime could be 10 mana and still be really good, but sure, maybe this helps a little?

Ok, well, just faced a Paladin with my attempt at quest Galakrond Shaman. I guess I see now why nobody is playing this deck. 2/1 rushes don't do much against 10/10s.

With the way so many men in power just think with their dicks and negatively effect millions of people, it's pretty disturbing people actually cry foul over supposedly negative representation of male characters in fiction like grumpy old Luke.
Wait, people complain about grumpy old Luke? Like from star wars episode 8? But he was the best character in that movie....

So...for a quest threw together a Galakrond Quest Shaman with Transfer Students.

It's been winning a lot in Casual, which is interesting. I assume as soon as I take it on ladder it'll just get rushed down by aggro, but its top end is a lot higher than the top end of most of the decks in the meta, so if it doesn't die in the early turns it does have a lot of staying power.

Maiev: Dunno a change was really needed, but it's minor. The stat boost isn't the appeal of Maiev's ability.

It's not the appeal of the ability, which is why it's a good thing to change. Honestly, I think they could have even just removed the buff altogether (that was the change I was expecting them to make). A 1 mana buy should be enough of an appeal for the hero.

Patchwerk: Oh go put him back to 60 like he began with. It's not like that was ever really overpowered, anyway.
He was actually the highest winrate hero when he was at 60. That was a long time ago, though. (There was also a point when he was also a top 10 winrate hero at 50 health, but yeah there's been some powercreep since then).

55 health combined with nerfs to the top 3 heroes probably gets his average placement somewhere around 4.5...which is fine. (4.5 is average, he's currently like 4.98).

Whirlwind Tempest: On one hand, I'm surprised they removed a minion so early. On the other, the stat buffing capabilities of elementals did make this guy ridiculous. No divine shield in ele's makes them very vulnerable to poison.
Whirlwind Tempest isn't the divine shield one. It's the "your minions with windfury have mega windfury" one.

Pogo was pretty memey with all of those heroes (other than Jandice) and not actually a good plan, to be fair.

Selfless Hero to 2: Why? To help everyone pick up tokens on turn 2? I guess in some cases this reduces the likelihood of naturally tripling it, but it's not really that much less likely to get in the late game if you're using it as tech.
Yeah, hard to say. Like...if they really wanted to limit how many of them were in the pool, they could have made it tier 4. People would still pick it up on tier 4, but the number in the pool would be cut in half.

If they had brought back OG Tirion at the same time they moved Selfless to 2, then the move would make sense. It would make it really bad for Tirion to stay on tier 1, which is something Tirion used to do a lot. But as-is...doesn't seem like it changes much? Tier 2 minion pool size is 15, tier 1 minion pool size is 16, so there's one less in the pool?

Democrats are returning absentee ballots at a higher rate than Republicans so far though which is historically unusual. Make of that what you will.
Historically absentee ballots have been mostly military (more often republican than democrat) but this year there's also people who take COVID seriously (more often democrats than republicans).

It's why I keep saying it's stupid that Trump keeps trying to paint Biden as a radical socialist. It literally only convinces the people who were already voting for Trump.
Ehh...I think it's their way of targeting Pennsylvania (which tends to have a lot of moderate voters who dislike extremists on either side of the aisle).

Normally states like Pennsylvania will swing against really extreme candidates like Trump (or sanders, going by the 2016 primary). Didn't happen in the 2016 general, but it's their default.

The Trump campaign seems to have decided that there's no way for them to avoid appearing extreme, so they're just trying to make their opponents appear extreme instead. And in particular try to tie them to rioting and looting, and just...generally lie and suggest they would be very disruptive (like saying they would ban gasoline). People who supported Bernie in the primary and called Biden "status quo Joe" for months aren't going to be fooled. But like...an undecided Pennsylvania voter who just wants calm...is typically anti-riot, and anti banning things that would disrupt their day to day lives.

Of course it only takes minimal research to show that Trump/Pence really are extremists, and that Biden/Harris are pretty moderate. But I guess they're banking on people not doing research.

The Trump campaign is leaving a ticket for Tupac Shakur at tonights VP debate because Kamala Harris called him her favorite rapper alive

what
I mean, I guess it's referring to this moment, where Kamala kind of tries and fails to seem hip:

But like...man, is that really the best dig you can swing at Kamala? Is anyone basing whether or not they think Kamala would be a VP based on her knowledge of rap music? To be blunt, how many undecided voters even know who Tupac is?

(Oracle's claim is that APIs are copyrightable, which as I understand it would be quite bad for the software industry)
Copyrightable APIs sound bad.

API just means function calls you call into. To use a videogame example it could be like

class Character{
get_position();
walk_towards_location(position);
run_towards_location(position);
damage_character();
get_character_health();
is_character_alive();
}

Oracles argument, near as I can tell, is that you can copyright that, a set of function names. Not any of the code inside the functions, just the function names. And the reason that matters, is that if you work with an Oracle database and then you work with a Google database, you would need to use two separate function name lists. Which sucks for developers who want to write code for two different platforms (like android and iphone).

Oracles argument is "yeah, but our list of function names is really well organized".

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/06/us/politics/family-separation-border-immigration-jeff-sessions-rod-rosenstein.html

Oh, hey, it's a new report on separating kids from parents.

But the attorney general at the time, Jeff Sessions, made it clear what Mr. Trump wanted on a conference call later that afternoon, according to a two-year inquiry by the Justice Departments inspector general into Mr. Trumps zero tolerance family separation policy.

We need to take away children, Mr. Sessions told the prosecutors, according to participants notes. One added in shorthand: If care about kids, dont bring them in. Wont give amnesty to people with kids.

Rod J. Rosenstein, then the deputy attorney general, went even further in a second call about a week later, telling the five prosecutors that it did not matter how young the children were. He said that government lawyers should not have refused to prosecute two cases simply because the children were barely more than infants.

Those two cases should not have been declined, John Bash, the departing U.S. attorney in western Texas, wrote to his staff immediately after the call. Mr. Rosenstein instructed that, per the A.G.s policy, we should NOT be categorically declining immigration prosecutions of adults in family units because of the age of a child.
