monkmith 02/16/21 9:48:55 AM #33	we need to fast track nuclear reactor builds. most of the red tape is in place because of old ass reactor designs that were essentially giant steam boilers with no safety release valve. a molten salt reactor by its very definition is resistant to runaway chain reactions, and because you're removing water from the cooling equation you dont run the risk of a huge steam or hydrogen explosion blowing up your building. there's also the fact that using a liquid fuel would allow you to use much more of the fuel, so much less long lasting nuclear waste. and of course there's the thorium reactor idea if we want to get an easier to dig up fuel. --- Taarsidath-an halsaam. Side streets in rural areas can be iffy. The city of St. Paul in particular is really bad at snow removal on its side streets and they can't have winter parking bans, because many homes over there don't have much for driveways to park their cars. Street parking is about all there is. Snow removal in Minneapolis and any surrounding suburb tends to be much better than within St. Paul. coastal virginia. we get hurricanes and flooding, that's where most of the weather prevention money goes for my area. ice and snow though? they absolutely fuck us. bit west of where i live they've been dealing with an ice storm, alerts i've seen suggest sheltering in place because they're not clearing shit... --- Taarsidath-an halsaam. No reason to hoard like that. keep up with the weather? they dont even attempt to do that in my area. snow plows dont even go out until the snow stops, and even then they just do interstates and ramps. my area got a foot and a half of snow a few years back, never seen that much snow in my life before and apparently the last time we'd gotten that amount was in the 80s. it took my city a week to "clear" major roads. and by clear i mean that it went from "impossible to drive" to "well you're gonna fuck up your car". secondary streets never got cleared. side roads never got cleared. neighborhoods never got cleared. so even though those main streets were "cleared", unless you had a truck you'd never make it to them... it took two weeks for the snow to melt. --- Taarsidath-an halsaam. You just can't be exposed to cold like that. You're gonna get frostbit. We get wet and icy snow up here among many other types. I've driven in blizzards all of my life. The snow isn't worse. You guys just suck at driving in that weather. Drive in it all your life and you'll get the feel for snow and ice on the road and when to hit the brakes or gas and not lose control of your vehicle. Seriously just brake early and brake often. And yeah we definitely have tons of snowplows at the ready and everyone has a snowblower and/or a bunch of snow shovels. I always keep a snow shovel in my car during the winter in case I get stuck. Snow really isn't that bad. Stop being so dramatic. We just went over this with covid. Clearing super market shelves over this stuff is kind of stupid. So many people hoard like they won't see daylight for a couple months. All the snow you get could also be entirely melted in a week or so. Snow up here tends to stick around for a while. southern states have invested shit all in tools to clear streets. if it doesn't get above freezing then neighborhoods and side roads remain impassible, main roads stay treacherous, bridges stay a frozen mess. it shuts whole areas down. --- Taarsidath-an halsaam.
