As far as ranged jobs go imo MCH is a lot more fun than BRD (haven't tried DNC yet). I'm really not a fan of having to constantly respond to procs; losing dps because I don't notice that Bloodletter came off cd early for a few seconds feels bad!

This is actually incorrect from level 50 onward (until you can double Flare) because Astral Fire buffs Fire 2 above Freeze and you want to be in fire to use Flare: https://www.akhmorning.com/jobs/blm/guide/starting-off/#aoe-3-targets (though at 60 you also replace the Fire 2s with Fire 4s at <5 targets)

Freeze does obsolete Blizzard 2, though.

I just healed Wanderer's Palace (Hard) with a tank I'm pretty certain had never tanked a dungeon before, and let me say that it was super fun having them single target one trash mob per pack and keep the last boss in the same place for the whole fight even after being told what to do differently multiple times

Looking forward to a similar experience with fresh Sages in 6.0...!

The words you are using sort of exemplify the problem with the system- "prepared" and "qualified." Which kids are going to be prepared and qualified? The ones who have parents who have been preparing them from an early age - i.e. generally wealthier families.

It's a really terrible to thing to tell a child that they aren't qualified, when the reason for that is that their parents are poor.

There is a minimum level of qualification necessary to be able to handle the curriculum at these schools. Is it wrong to not let kids who havent finished algebra into a calculus class?

And not all differences in academic ability boils down to a difference in resources. There are high achieving poor kids and low achieving rich kids (including those whose parents have pushed them). You can account for differences in opportunity without flipping the table over and going to a lottery, leaving the most of the most talented kids of all backgrounds to go to their base schools because they werent lucky enough.

The lottery will miss most of these students too. Regardless of what you think we should be selecting for a lottery is strictly worse than picking based on whatever your preferred metric is.

The argument seems to be that because testing/grades/etc are not absolutely perfectly correlated with making the best choice we should just throw them out and use no information whatsoever, which makes no sense.

Yes, hence my parenthetical about selection effects. A lot of the students who do register will do so because their parents made them (because the school is more prestigious), and there will be no opportunity to figure out which ones are not prepared besides them enrolling and finding out that they cant handle it. And even of the kids who do want to go youll be getting a group thats on average less qualified.

I agree the lotteries are better. If a child is not being sufficiently challenged by the current school system, you cannot use merit to distinguish who gets it, as often you will see cases like tony described where the students who are not being challenged actually underachieve. A good sign a student is being unfulfilled with their current situation is... trying to go to a magnet school that might make things better.

These schools are not appropriate for most students and can be very stressful places for those insufficiently prepared or interested. I went to a magnet school and loved it, but there were some kids forced to go by their parents who would have been much happier at their base high schools. If Im not misreading Tony was identified by testing, which seems like an example of the system working?

With the lottery, even the absolutely most qualified students who would be absolutely wasting their time at their base high schools are in most cases rejected. Furthermore, the reason these schools are good in the first place is primarily not because theyre given more resources or have the best teachers; its the accumulation of the critical mass of students necessary to offer more advanced coursework. If the students are the same as in any other school in the district the concept falls apart and youre not even offering anything special to the students who were lucky enough to attend.

(It probably doesnt collapse entirely to a normal school because of selection effects, but a lot of the kids applying will be doing so because their parents made them anyway).

What we need is a flat education system where every student gets the best quality of education possible. In the long run we should move away from private schools as well.

Its not just a matter of students getting a better or worse education. Not all students educational needs are the same. The point of magnet schools is to achieve a critical mass of students necessary to justify specialized courses that would benefit those students. E.g., at a typical high school you are not going to get enough students interested in and capable of taking a class in differential equations or quantum physics, but maybe you would have had a couple of people at each of these schools. If instead these students attend one school you can actually offer these classes without having the kids have to dual enroll at the local university.

Im not saying that representation at these schools is not a problem, but you can address that without throwing out the entire purpose of the school.

The purpose of these schools is not to reduce (or increase) inequality. It's to provide a higher level of education to students who are not sufficiently challenged by the standard curriculum. You can't identify the kids who will benefit from such a school with a lottery, which has identically zero discerning power.

So the purpose of the characters having sex is to regenerate the magic circuits of the MC or something (obviously a dumb pretext to force the scenes in), so for the anime they still have to resolve the magic circuit issue. Im actually thinking of the replacement of the H scene with Saber which, iirc, involves some sort of dragon in a completely incomprehensible plot point.

As far as the VNs quality goes, imo the story is good but the writing is bad (probably >50% of the text could be cut without changing the story). Id definitely recommend the (newer) anime, though.

I dont understand why that article says that social distancing/masking/etc stopping the flu but not covid is hard to explain. There is an incredibly simple explanation: covid is much more contagious than the flu. Those measures did work to reduce transmission of both viruses. Because the flu started at like R~1.2-1.3 or something they were enough to stop exponential growth. Covid started at like 2.5-3 and they werent enough to consistently keep R<1.

Oh yeah I've def been doing those, except for the subjob ones. I know I have to hit 30 in Thuma before unlocking Black Mage and subsequent White Mage, and I don't think I have a reason to do any of the other class starting quests or all these dozens of level 1-3 quests in the new area.

I mean more if I should be doing those green circle quests where you activate it yourself (forgot the name, Leves?) or if I should be queuing for stuff.

Leves are somewhat useful for leveling crafters/gatherers. Theyre pretty useless for battle classes. I assume they might have been more useful back in 1.0?

As a business owner I wouldn't be surprised if rent control caused the quality of housing to plummet. Building more housing is definitely a better solution than rent control

Theres a pretty clear consensus among economists that rent control hurts on net. And yeah, making it easier to build more housing would help a lot. In a lot of places its obscenely hard to get new construction approved.

yeah, based on the way other similar diseases work (flu, colds, etc) we hit peak in the fall to early winter and it sharply drops in Jan. so we should be through the current worst but a few spikes will exist - superbowl sunday, chinese new years, st. patty's.

Not necessarily true; it depends on how fast we can vaccinate people before the UK variant becomes the dominant strain in the US. If we cant outrace it there will probably be another peak in March or something.

The driver and the company need to make money and there's only so much of a hit the restaurant can absorb. A lot of those costs are fixed, so the pricing makes a lot more sense if you're ordering for multiple people.

(And I say this as someone who has been ordering dinner through DoorDash almost every day during the pandemic for just myself: the costs would not normally make sense for a single person without a ton of disposable income, and what I'm really paying for is the ability to minimize my covid exposure).
