Because you are getting a two Mana discount on assasinate.

I mean, I will say that in magic the gathering this kind of effect would be "target player sacrifices a creature". That's not as easy to do in Hearthstone, but you could maybe do something like "at the start of your opponent's next turn, they choose which creature gets destroyed".

That said, one of their goals with hearthstone is to keep it as simple to play and use as possible, and random instead of opponent chooses does speed up the game.

I also think they keep it on the weaker end just to make it so that it's not super emphasized. Like...Shadow Word Death costs 2 mana, and deadly shot costs 3 mana. They could probably make DS cost 2 mana without breaking balance, but it would really emphasize the randomness.

Thanks but no thanks, Madam Speaker
I mean, I don't actually disagree with her.

I undeniably lean left, but In Canada, there have been times when I've supported the Conservative party, when I felt like they would do a better job.

The republican party is not a party I look at right now and think "yeah, that's a viable alternative I could consider voting for." They're comic book villains who try and stop black people from voting. They're comic book villains who just had their president refuse to say anything bad about white supremacy and try to destroy faith in democracy.

Like...yes, it's bad that the Republican party is acting like comic book villains cause now we have some comic book villains in power. But it's ALSO bad that the democrats essentially only need to campaign on "I'm not republican" to win re-election. I want people to actually compete for my support, try to win me over. Instead, republicans are lazy pieces of shit and aren't even trying, hoping they can just appeal to enough white supremacists, spread enough fake news, and stop enough black voters from voting to win without actually having a strong plan on how to govern the country. This in turn means that democratic politicians can be really underwhelming with really mediocre plans on how to govern the country and get away with it at the ballot box.

Neither side really has to present a good plan or good policies under this political climate. Like...take healthcare--Trump had 4 years, literally still has not presented a plan. Biden doesn't have much of a plan either (a "public option" that sounds a lot like already existing medicaid, but maybe middle class people can buy into it now). And nobody is focused on the health care part of the debate last night cause the rest of the debate was a giant car crash people can't look away from.

In another message, a member commented that the group was already seeing a spike in new recruits.

Am I the only one not really bothered by the idea of an earpiece in debates even if it was true?

Like...in 2004, there were conspiracy theories about Bush using an Earpiece (cause some on the left thought he couldn't come up with those answers on his own or something).

Even if it was true (which it wasn't) why does it matter? Running the country is not actually a one person job, when you elect a president you get a whole administration with them. You're not just electing George W Bush, you're also electing Dick Cheny and Karl Rove too. Presumably whoever is whispering in the earpiece would be an important decision maker in the administration, and if the candidate thinks this decision maker has better answers, then those are probably the answers that will get implemented, so...I want to hear what the person in the earpiece has to say.

I wouldn't mind a debate format where presidential candidates could just defer answers to people in their staff. Like...if Trump gets asked an education question, he should be allowed to pull up a video feed of Betsy DeVoss if he wants and let her answer the question, if he thinks that'll actually make his administration look better. Betsy DeVoss's answer on education probably tells us more about what will happen with education under a Trump Presidency than Trump's answers anyway.

Why does an aggro class get infinite card draw, lifesteal, tempo, and disruption to the point where 13 nerfs changed nothing whatsoever? Like I get that Blizzard is laughably incompetent, but even they have to see how idiotic this design is.

Every single moron involved in designing Demon Hunter needs to be fired. This is just laughable, indefensible garbage.
I mean...aggro DH is like...tier 3 according to Vicious Syndicate. (The more midrangey soul DH is higher tier).

Don't get me wrong, I've been playing a decent amount of aggro DH this season, I don't think it's unplayable, but I also switched off of it recently cause I found I was losing more than I was winning while trying to climb at diamond.

As for that game....

You were playing an aggro deck yourself and on the coin--going first is still a large advantage in this game, especially in a pseudo-mirror match, so being on the coin already makes this rough.

Turn 1 you did coin Wand Thief shadow step Wand Thief floating one mana. Obviously I know that wand thief needs to be comboed, and also obviously I'm no rogue expert, but I'm...skeptical about that opening; coining just to float 1 mana sounds pretty bad, and also strands your Evil Miscreant in your hand, which could have been coined turn 2.

Turn 2 was played fine

Turn 3 you Ice Barrier'd and passed. This feels pretty weak--when you are both board centric decks, taking turn 3 off not making any attempt to put something on the board or remove something from the board just means he's going to get ahead of you. Like...in an aggro mirror, would I use Healing Touch? Sure...when it looks like my opponent has lethal, but not on turn 3 when I'm trying to get board position.

Turn 4 you were mana burned (only had 2 mana), daggered up and passed. Not many options with 2 mana, of course. Still...I would be tempted to play Spymistress here, which would let you kill the Bonechewer Brawler next turn. I can maybe see keeping the spymistress for Eviscerate combo...but on turn 5 you could use Greyhart Sage to activate the evis combo if needed.

Turn 5 play looked fine to me

Turn 6 play looked fine to me

The one thing about this replay that could be flagged as a balance issue is that you felt compelled to use 2 mana removal (frostbolt) on a 1 mana minion (Battlefiend). It was the correct play, but when it's right to lose 1 mana of tempo to remove a threat, that can be a sign of imbalance. (I remember when it was correct to use 2 mana Ironbeak Owl on 1 mana Undertaker? A play that always put the owl player behind, and was almost always correct; those were dark days).

But Frostbolt isn't actually a card you put into your deck these days. Backstab is a card you probably put into your deck, and Backstab does great against battlefiend.

So..from that game, maybe there's a small case to nerf battlefiend, but mostly I think there's a lot of other factors going on in that game. Going second with a really clunky draw from you against a double battlefiend opener. Very playing-it-slow value-oriented thinking from you which is probably right in some matchups, but this was an aggro vs aggro mirror where board control is super good.

That's one take.

The even more cynical take would be that the evangelical church was founded before the civil war, and was the only institution that the south controlled during reconstruction--and therefore the only institution they could use to push their ideas against the ideas the north was trying to push on them. (The south would ultimately win that cultural battle and impose Jim Crow laws).

...Which would mean that the Evangelical church DOES have principles. ...Principles of white supremacy.

A poll just came out that has Trump up by only 1 in Alaska.

I assumed it was a crazy outlier but checked 538 out of curiosity, and apparently there have only been four polls of Alaska this year, all with Trump between +1 and +6:

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/president-general/alaska/
Alaska is interesting demographically, cause it's split between multiple cultures.

Alaska's panhandle is similar culturally to Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland (where Juneau Alaska is located).

Alaska does have a region that is similar politically to somewhere like Montana (the part with Anchorage). This is the most populous region that usually controls state politics.

And then Alaska has a third region that is basically First Nations, where the natives were like "fuck you we never ceeded our land" and the courts were like "huh, yeah, there's no paperwork saying otherwise cause nobody went up there, guess it's yours now." That's the region changing the name of all the mountains that were named after US presidents back to traditional names in their old languages.

Anyway, two of these regions fucking hate Trump, and the third Montana-ish region...has some potential to swing (much like Montana does--kind of hates both parties, and the government in general, which for now has allied them more with republicans, but it's a shakable alliance).

Jandice fix: make her hero power not work on pogos.

Top 20% (7,600+)
* Jandice has a 3.67 average finish.
* Jandice with a pogo centered comp has a 2.04 average finish - 41.2% of jandice comps.
* Jandice with a non pogo centered comp has an average placement of 4.81

Source:

https://old.reddit.com/r/hearthstone/comments/ium1lc/battlegrounds_hero_rankings_patch_182/g5ndr99/?context=3

I mean, you can try to do it in a more elegant way. Make minions in general not keep enchantments when they go back to the shop. But basically mess up the pogo interaction and the data suggests she becomes not that hard to beat.

I actually expect her winrate to drop a little with this new patch, just because pogos will be gone from more lobbies (I assume with elementals added we're going to be missing 2 tribes per lobby).

The problem she raised is, let's say she gets citizenship and then spends her retirement back in Canada. OK, reasonable plan right? But American law is such that an American citizen who does something like buy and sell property in Canada still has to pay American taxes on that. (This is to combat people who offshore all their money, of course, but it does suck if you just want to retire in Canada).

My mom is actually more convinced than ever Trump will still be President by the end of this year. I say she's still overly concerned with Trump's "base".

Guy has a vice grip on mob psychology. He knows how to promise people what they want. But well, it takes a LOT more than that to be a great leader.
As things stand...the electoral map is looking hard for Trump.

In 2016 he flipped a lot of votes in the northern midwest that tend to like government programs such as social security and obamacare, as he campaigned promising a lot of that stuff in 2016. Trump was the one Republican leader standing up and saying he wouldn't cut social security and medicare, and that he would replace Obamacare with something "even better"--this gained him a lot of supports in regions of the country that don't normally swing republican. Given that he broke basically every promise of that kind which he made during the campaign, he seems likely to lose some support in those areas--and polls so far seem to be backing that up that theory:

https://twitter.com/WoodardColin/status/1309275684922163201

Like...if Trump loses some combination of Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin (all four states are states that (on average) felt he was promising to be a different president than he turned out to be, and are, on average, polling in Biden's column right now) it's not really clear where else he can pick up support.

Almost all of 538's modelled victories for Trump have him winning 4/4 or 3/4 of those states. So what could he pick up instead? Some of 538's models on possible Trump wins have him picking up states like Oregon, Minnesota, New Mexico, or Colorado. After 2016 I don't want to rule anything out, but all of those sound kinda hard for him to pick up too.

But there'd been nine men, and nobody's ever raised a question about that.

Worth noting that of the Republican supreme court justices right now, currently none of them are women. So it would still be good to change that. The percentage tracker in battlegrounds runs simulations to get odds (1000 simulations I think) but yeah, if a card isn't implemented right in the simulation it might give the wrong percentage. And even if everything is implemented right, the simulation might just RNG into a skewed percentage. And of course when you're simulating 10k RNG rolls in about 1 second, questions do need to be asked about what random number generator you are using.

Anyway, I've been watching some streamers play the heroic tavern brawl, but man, I'm gettting sick of watching people play mage.

Also, my urge to craft Lord Barov has largely subsided, but I am seriously considering crafting Lorekeeper Polkelt; just seems to be used in a ton of decks. (Including a deck I swapped to for my ladder climb when aggro DH finally stopped working).

Yeah...for myself I don't comment on most of the shootings that happen (like...90% of them), whether it's black people getting shot by police, police getting shot, mass shootings with assault rifles in public places, or shootings in conflict zones like Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan.

But like...I'm pro gun control and anti-death penalty and anti-war, you can pretty much assume that my opinion is "someone got shot and died, this is a bad thing."

The gotcha of "you didn't talk about this particular shooting, this makes you a hypocrite" is like...nah, much more likely I was just feeling sick to my stomach from all the death in the news and didn't want to spend even more time talking about it on GameFAQs.

So this report is interesting.

Preliminary, but it seems mask wearing, even in cases when people catch Covid anyway, might still make the person who catches Covid get less severe symptoms and be less sick, while also still gaining some immunity to the virus:

Honestly may as well just block anyone who continues to repeatedly engage with him. Corrik-19, gotta stop the spread.
No: putting someone on ignore also hides any gamefaqs posts from people quoting the person.

So no, people can reply to Corrik all they want as long as they quote him when replying and you just have to put Corrik on ignore if you're not interested in that part of the topic.

Gee, I wonder why so many of those people are willing to go along with anything Trump wants as long as it pisses off the left.
Well...yes.

That thing I talked about where empires screw over remote provinces? Certainly has happened in the US, and not just in the various islands the US conquered, it also happened in continental US states like Colorado, Wyoming, Montana. States that have a desert and/or mountain climate where it's hard to have enough farming for an independent economy.

Costal companies controlled the railways, manipulated shipping prices for railways to make sure that no local factories would spring up. Bullied local state governments into lowering corporate taxes to 0, and also pushed local governments into striking environmental regulation laws, etc. People in states like these (overall) have a hatred of big government, and ALSO a hatred of big corporations, cause they've been screwed by both pretty much since the beginning.

Do these states want to rebel? Kinda. Can they? Not really on their own, they're so economically dependent on the coasts.

Same reason, I assume, that Puerto Rico hasn't left the US (unlike other territories such as the Philippines, who did successfully leave). Even though the US government has been a huge dick to Puerto Rico.

If people in a territory that's being mistreated don't see themselves being better off by leaving the union, then they will not (on their own) leave the union.

none of those examples are relevant. the breakdown of democracy is entirely different than an empire acting callously to one of its regions
Sure, they can be disconnected, but if things continue in the same direction they have been going we'll get both at the same time.

More and more I question if things can even be solved in a peaceful manner.

I don't want it to come to that of course, but like... what do we do? What stops this insanity?

If our votes end up literally not being counted then I fear for the near future.
I think that depends how they run things.

If they don't count votes, don't give up power, and continue running things in a hostile way to large sections of the country (e.g. raising taxes on states like New York and California which they did with their tax changes while simultaneously defunding "anarchist juristictions" which happen to be the same places like New York City) then those jurisdictions will have a strong incentive to cede from the union.

At least, that's going by history of past empires. (I'm using empires as the model here, because empires usually try to extract wealth from some neglected provinces in order to enrich the capital city, and then typically the neglected provinces rebel. Happened with the Roman empire, happened with the British Empire, happened with the Spanish Empire, happened with the Ghana Empire etc).

On the other hand...if they seize power, effectively dissolve democracy, but do a good job of actually running the country without trying to slap around places like New York? Then the country probably stays together for a long time, just with a minimal or much weaker democracy (like the Roman empire after Caesar fucked the senate).

Maybe things will be different somehow because it's 2020, but historically those are the two likely outcomes if democracy really does go down the drain.

This is kind of why I hate these hashtag politics. Like all of these celebrities saying Justice for Breonna and spamming it, and this is all it gets them. But they won't bring up what really needs to change, because saying Justice for Breonna sounds nice and while I don't think they don't necessarily not care about justice for her, and I appreciate them actually bringing more notice to it, they haven't bothered to look into why there is no justice for Breonna and probably won't aside from "our justice system is broken and needs to change."

If all of these celebrities and whatnot got together and started something like #AbolishPoliceUnions, that's how they'll end up making significant change. I don't think anything like that will happen, and people will just say it's bulls*** and not fair. And they're right, but it doesn't change anything and we'll get the same circular process we did with this where they rally people to support justice for the next person unfairly murdered by cops without addressing the reason there is never actual justice for them.
Those kinds of hashtags exist and circulate too.

The reason to use hashtags like JusticeForBreona is that it helps avoid turning the person into a statistic.

Same reason that when aid groups are trying to get you to help starving children in Africa, they don't start quoting statistics about percentages of undernourished children. They show you a picture of one kid and ask you to sponsor that kid and tell you that you'll be able to send letters to that kid.

Getting people to picture one individual human being is just more effective at getting them to care than getting them to picture a spreadsheet of statistics.

And when one of the main issues raised by BLM was that people seemed to not care or notice when black people were dying in high numbers, that people weren't treating those deaths as important and something to solve, yeah, seems like a reasonable approach.

---

There's also like...I say this as a game developer, but people are very good at noticing when something is wrong with a game, but not very good at diagnosing how to fix it. Like...I remember getting playtest feedback that included "the camera is too close" and "the camera is too far away" and "the camera moves too slow" and "the camera moves too fast". We looked at that feedback, and decided we needed to improve the camera.

Do I, personally, know how to most effectively fix police departments? No. Can I notice that something is wrong? Yes. Should the police departments hire me personally in order to implement a 3 word hashtag? No, they should hire someone who knows the subject; maybe a police chief from a city that has had successful reforms, cause there's a few such police chiefs out there.

I, for one, look forward to our future where there are 289 "states" in the Union as existing states split into smaller areas to politically add new Senators for whomever is in power at the moment.
I mean, there's a lot of states that aren't really split along cultural lines. (Like...a large number of states honestly). Plenty of states are divided between two or three distinctive cultures.

That said, if people gerrymander states for political purposes, they're still not going to be divided along cultural lines.

Like...there is strong evidence for three cultural regions in California. But none of the California split proposals have been divided along cultural lines; pretty good article about that:

(Getting people in Canada and Europe to like Trump usually doesn't happen because of how badly he handled trade with all those countries, how he pulled out of deals that those countries like such as the Iran Nuclear Deal.)

(Although to be fair, I have actually seen one international board that did like republicans. r/HongKong on Reddit, as some republicans such as Ted Cruise have been speaking more loudly about the situation in Hong Kong than democrats have. And they like that Trump is a huge dick to China all the time--I mean, so do I to be fair; being a dick to China is the one part of Trump's platform I do like; it's just a much less important part of his platform to me than it is to the people of hong kong).

Ok it was he had a 70% shot of winning a plurality of delegates, but not necessarily enough to automatically clinch it. He had a 46% shot of winning outright, with the second likely option of 40% going to "nobody winning outright".

Recall the extremely infamous "Can Bernie Sanders or the Coronavirus be stopped?" headline.

Okay, yes, those are much closer to the numbers I remembered--46% to outright win. I was by no means convinced that the DNC would just let him have the nomination if he won a plurality but not the majority of the delegates, so I remember still being pretty nervous about how the 46% number was still below 50%.

And yes, I do remember the Coronavirus/Bernie headline.

When Bernie had a 96% chance to win the primary at one point, the entire media and Dem Party was flipping out, there were thinkpieces about Dems letting Bernie fail against Trump in order to end his movement and blame the rise of Trump on US.

Yet the DAY Biden took ONE STATE, the entire narrative was Joe is gonna be the nominee, we need to focus on beating Trump.

This isnt me reading Leftist Twitter, this topic did it too! You absolutely cannot deny this.

Ok, rewind, I was watching the news during that era, was a Warren supporter who jumped ship to Bernie when Warren looked non-viable, I don't think Bernie EVER looked like he had a 96% chance to win the primary. There were times when the most likely modelled outcome was him getting the plurality of the delegates, with remaining delegates split between the rest of the candidates. But those models always assumed nobody would drop out (which of course was extremely unlikely).

He also didn't actually get the lead until like...Nevada. (Pete Buttigeig technically had the delegate lead through Iowa and New Hampshire).

You can say that Pete was doomed from the start because he didn't do well among minorities and the first two states were really white, and that's fair. And Bernie made really strong inroads into latino communities, so that's a huge improvement from 2016. But while Bernie did well among Latino voters, Biden was still polling top among African American communities.

I don't ever remember a point where I thought Bernie was just a statistical lock to win. It wasn't always clear if it would be Bernie vs Biden, but after the first couple rounds of voting, it was clear it would be Bernie vs someone, whether that someone was Buttigeig or Bloomberg or Klobuchar or Biden. And the result of that race never looked statistically locked to me one way or the other.

I mean, honestly, I think the realistic scenario is that America splits into smaller countries. When democracy no longer determines how the country is run, some parts of the country are just going to peace out.

I mean, I have criticisms of that scene but none of them have to do with anarchy.

Most of them have to do with New Yorkers not seeming especially worried about social distancing.
