It breaks the narrative dissonance that almost every open world game has by giving you one objective, and having everything else be something that you dont HAVE to do. That way when youre exploring and doing side quests, youre not deliberately ignoring the main missions to do so like in RDR2 or Fallout 4, youre doing it to get stronger to complete your one goal: be able to defeat Ganon. Every side quest, every bit of exploration, every Korok seed feeds back into that one goal, rather than being a distraction from it. You're missing my point. It's empty because everything that can be done is just to mess around. Undeniably that can be and is fun but it gets boring after a while and after all these years of Zelda games I expect some sense of progression. Almost all the content being sidequests that give you meaningless rewards just tells me that the whole experience is meaningless, a lot of people argue that "it's about the journey, not the destination" but I have to disagree, other open world games and especially other Zelda games can have both great journeys and destinations. That's why even if it is absolutely open world, I argue it's a sandbox game because those tend to give the player a bunch of tools to dick around and nothing else of substance. And normally I agree that more options is better but this is the Master Sword. If they're willing to toss away an integral part of the lore for no payoff (there's no difference if you get it or not) then why did they even bother making it a Zelda game? Even Age of Calamity states that it's an important item, seals evil, blah blah blah. How many people say that BoTW is a good game but a bad Zelda game? Horrible music, bosses, "dungeons" puzzles, voice acting, "characters, lore, I could go on. It's just a horrible mess. After the tutorial, which is hand holdy as fuck, it's all just sidequests until you decide to go to the final boss. Even the It lays down a good foundation for a game but it's just a bland sandbox. I think it's the one that takes the longest to "get to the good part". It takes about 42 seconds to get there and more often than I'd like battles are over by then.
