good list! I'm not much of a Lost fan really, but this has been a fun read so far.

your top four is also a perfect match to the only four people on the show that I would describe as genuinely good characters (juliet might sneak into fifth spot overall), so good work on that too!

hard one to fathom, this

I haven't always been a huge fan of her stuff, but she was incredibly influential and inarguably one of the people who shaped the last decade of music

with DOOM at least it felt like he had fully told his story already, this is crushingly sad because she had so much more to say

rest in peace

that's fair but... is it really that big a deal? i get that it's frustrating to wait this long and faster counts would be nice but i don't think it really matters.

maybe i missed it but i don't think plum answered this question either. he just went "slow counts are a super big deal and we need to take drastic measures to make sure votes get counted faster!"
I don't think it's a big deal in itself; certainly it's a minor issue with american democracy compared to things like voter suppression and the undemocratic aspects of the electoral system.

however, it's indicative of the larger problem of america's inexplicably poor election infrastructure, which leaves it more vulnerable than most western democracies to manipulation from outside (see 2016) or inside (now).

considering the current chaos after an election that wasn't actually close by any meaningful metric, it's easy to imagine that the republican attempts to effectively steal the election would have been successful if it were a closer biden win. a huge amount of the current GOP conspiracy theories revolve around vote counting order, which could have been completely nullified if it was handled efficiently in the first place. in that void, a huge amount of the country now believes the election was rigged, and faith in democracy itself suffers.

perspective from a non-american and an outside observer to all this:

  • rick scott clearly has a nefarious self-serving agenda in suggesting this, in line with previous republican efforts towards vote suppression, and it is right to be suspicious of his motives
  • this year's election, in the midst of the pandemic, needs to be understood as a uniquely challenging situation and given some leeway
  • that said, from an outside perspective, american elections do seem to be organized in a remarkably haphazard and shoddy way across the board, and vote counting speed is one aspect of that. california as masterplum mentioned above is a perfect example; even in normal circumstances that state always takes weeks, and there's never the excuse of "oh it's close, we need to be careful". it's just weird and baffling that the popular vote differential still isn't known now, three weeks later.

Pandemic caused recession. Every single president but 1 in like 150 years or some shit has lost with a recession in their final 2 years their re-election.

I mean, this is not rocket science at all.
I mean, Europe has also entered a crazy recession this year and their leaders don't seem to be suffering for it (bar Johnson, who took a similar approach to Trump and has also fallen in favorability). Maybe you can argue that American voters somehow prioritize the economy more heavily, but I'd want to see some evidence for that.

The majority of world leaders have increased in approval during COVID, even in countries which have suffered bad outbreaks. Trump is a rare exception.

To claim that he could not have benefited from this is to completely ignore all evidence.

in defense of the last national album, the songs are a lot punchier live and I still think it's overall better than both trouble will find me and sleep well beast (both of which have some killer tracks but are also kinda boring too).
I could believe that, they're a great live band in general. The biggest issue with IAETF is easily its length, if it were 15 minutes shorter I'd easily take it over TWFM (though not SWB, which I really enjoy).

Folklore needs more listens for me to judge it well, but Swift albums have a tendency to run too long too and that might be more obvious here than elsewhere because of it's all somewhat low-key and lacking in punchy dynamics. Same problem, really!

first impressions: this isn't bad!

seems to be the first album of hers since red that isn't weighed down by a handful of unbelievably obnoxious songs, which is a big plus, and there's some really lovely stuff on here (cardigan, betty, august, this is me trying)

mostly though it kind of just reminds me of the most recent national album - always pleasant but far too long, and once you get to the second half most of the songs just blend into a vaguely pretty haze

it's an incredible piece of work really, never seen anything like it before or since

season two finale is particularly jaw-dropping, people talk about game of thrones' willingness to kill off characters but i've never seen any series show their protagonists getting so unambiguously destroyed like hannibal did

a tiny bit too ridiculous (and periodically straight up revolting) to sit among my absolute favourite shows, but i am very happy that it exists
